Viewer Deluxe: <malthrope>, I’m happy to hear CVD works fine with dial-up. Enjoy!

<druid>, There is plenty of support for troubleshooting Java installations at http://www.javatester.org. After you make sure JRE is installed and works fine you can get to more specific problems. Please, visit CVD's home page here: http://www.geocities.com/pilafovi/C... At the bottom you will find my e-mail where you can send the messages.

Also, it is a good idea to scan this (current) forum from time to time where you can find users in similar situation like yours.

Mar-21-08  Granite: <cu8sfan: <Viewer Deluxe> I just noticed that I have problems using my scroll wheel when viewing a site with the Viewer Deluxe on.>

I am having the same problem with the combination of Windows XP, Firefox 2.0.0.12 and Java Version 1.5.0.

Viewer Deluxe: <Granite>, Have you tried clicking once outside the applet? You should be able to scroll as usual after that.

<cu8sfan>'s post applied to the previous version of CVD.

Mar-21-08  Manic: <Viewer Deluxe> The new viewer is pretty good. Looks better than the normal MyChess and also loads much faster for me. I just have one question: could you make it possible to play it through using the spacebar? It is much easier for me to play through games using the spacebar than clicking on the arrows with them mouse.

Thanks in advance!

Viewer Deluxe: <Manic>, A very good keyboard support is already in place. You can use arrow keys, Home, End for game navigation and several others for advanced functions. Once you get to the context menus everything is self-documented and user friendly.
Mar-22-08  Subotaly: ** CVD on Firefox/Linux/Java ** anybody has it working WELL ? On my system, it loads the starting board, the buttons react OK, BUT it does NOT load the data in the RIGHT side tables (names, ratings, moves list ..).I can NOt play the game. ** The old default (Mychess) works OK ** Flip/flopped several times => same same. TIP: switching from CVD to MyChess, the SUN JAVA logo plays again. Is it correct ? Sarching for clues myself, but any help welcome. Thanks
Mar-22-08  Subotaly: ** CVD on Firefox/Linux/Java **(2) - Tested my JAVA/Firefox with JAVA testers @ JAVA.COM & JAVATESTER.ORG. OK on both. My JAVA is 1.5.0_14 ; AUTOMATIX2 downl'ed
1.6 but did not install (just found out).
But error messages ref. CVD in Firefox's JAVA console. Anybody in the situation ??
Mar-22-08  Subotaly: ** CVD on Firefox/Linux/Java **(3) ...
AND another level of testing tells me this " Test Results - JavaScript IS WORKING in your web browser + Your web browser supports JavaScript version 1.6 - Your web browser is Firefox version 1.5.0.13" => could the problem lie in the fact that JRE is 1.5 and JScript is 1.6 ?? I would say NO ,but, I am NOT a JAVA expert ! IBM Assembler or RExx, OK, but JAVA, NO (or not yet). Thanks for feedback !

  Sneaky: Nikolay:

First off, GREAT WORK. We've been suffering under the buggy MyChess for years and you've not only fixed its bugs but made it better in every imaginable way.

I have two suggestions.

Suggestion #1: Personally I love the cross-hatching on the dark squares but that seems to be the only semi-legitimate complaint that anybody has come up with, outside of nitty gritty technical issues. If you just had an option to turn that off and on, that CG could somehow tie to the preference page, then the 1 complainer out of 1000 would be silenced.

Suggestion #2: Some of the buttons are not self evident. Especially that one 2nd from the right which shows two arrows chasing each other. I finally figure out what it's for, it refreshes the page and thereby loses all of the analysis I've plugged in. But it took me a long time to figure that out. With that in mind, maybe you can make "tool tips"? Hover the mouse over the button and get a concise explanation for what it does? This feature wouldn't help me personally since I've finally figure out all of its features, but new users would benefit tremendously.

Anyhow, once again, great work. You will be the hero of Chessgames for years to come.

Viewer Deluxe: Thanks for your kind words, <Sneaky> You are welcome.

Long ago I felt that chess community and especially CG.com deserved a better and more powerful tool for enjoying the games. I was rather surprised that despite the number of Web-based chess viewers none seemed complete enough. I spend quite some time working on the non-GUI modules that are the core of the project. As you said, there were many challenges to overcome. Few months ago I admitted (to myself) that the GUI is as important and I introduced a lot of changes in ver. 3.2 (Nov 2007).

I like your ideas and I already put them on my TO-DO list. I wish others will join and share their major (or minor) complaints. Finally, I will do by best to provide the adequate support that every software product needs. On the technical side, the JRE installation and maintenance is mostly in user’s own hands. The variety of platforms is big and no testing can cover all of them so we have no choice but to rely on Java's portability.

Mar-22-08  Manic: <Viewer Deluxe> Wow thanks. I did not know that. That's pretty cool
Mar-23-08  Karpova: The Chess Viewer Deluxe is really great with a lot of very useful options - That's without doubt one of the major improvements to the site so far!

The only thing I don't like is the way the board+pieces looks. I liked the "MyChess"-style (or Fritz-style) better. Would it be possible to give the option of changing the appearance of the chessboard to the "MyChess"-style?

Viewer Deluxe: I had a chance last night and did some testing. The viewer works just fine under Ubuntu 7.10 (Firefox 2.0.0.12; Sun's JRE 1.6.0_03). My general advice to users under Linux is to verify the JRE installation and consider re-installing it if in doubt.

For example, the stack trace that <druid> sent me indicated some internal problems between JRE and X11 related to menus. A better test in that situation would be http://www.amberchess2008.com/pgnvi.... If the applet works for you try the context menu by right-clicking the chessboard. If you still have issues you’d be more convinced to replace/fix the JRE.

Mar-23-08  Subotaly: ** CVD on Firefox/Linux/Java **(4) ...
Thanks for the feedback - the applet @amberchess works OK. I am still on Ubu6.06 LTS and waiting for next LTS (8.04). I will re-install then. I can live with mychess in the meantime unless I find the fix myself. I agree with the comments by others : CVD looks great and would be a nice ++ over Mychess. Your JAVA product is impressive. I will keep on looking.

tpstar: <Nikolay Pilafov> The new Chess Viewer Deluxe is great, especially the Autoplay feature. However I cannot see any annotations unless I view the game's PGN directly. Examples are Keene vs Miles, 1975 & Y Dembo vs D Driamin, 2000 where the moves with comments have "A" but only "?" shows up in the Annotations box. Thank you for your help.

Viewer Deluxe: That’s really weird, <tpstar> Nobody else reported such before.

What’s your platform (see above)?
After the usual troubleshooting steps you might look at the Java console messages.

tpstar: <Nikolay Pilafov> Thanks for the quick response. =)

I just changed back to MyChess and I only get the first letter of the comment ("N" or "M" or "!") in the annotations box. So it's not your software; it's my ancient computer.

I'll try again on a different computer later. Thank you. =)

Viewer Deluxe: In this case, try reinstalling the JRE first. That's the usual suspect.
Mar-23-08  timhortons: im using two pgn replayer in my blog the one with www.chessvideos.tvgame-convert.php and chess.maribelajar.comchesspublisherindex.php, one thing id noticed in posting games of human versus computer is that these two replayer would at least read in detail the pgn of 200 move game and anything more than that is either a mess or they wont stop reading anymore, take note of grandmaster hikaru nakamura game against transwarp at icc, it reaches until 363 move and the beauty of the game lies in the mating net that grandmaster nakamura coordinated, he used 6 bishop in parallel formation under last 3 second of his time clock, mr palafov is youre game replayer available for webmasters?or can u advice me what game replayer that is free online is available for us that could read more than 200 pgn, thanks:)
Mar-23-08  timhortons: no, the nakamura rybka game happen just an hour ago at icc, please check the pgn of the game that i uploaded in the game pgn utility, he mated rybka using 5 bishop in a parallel formation, its a 363 move game, thanks those two game replayer i posted cant read the pgn of more than 200 move, im an amateur chess blogger and experimenting on everyhting, thank you:)

Viewer Deluxe: <timhortons>, Here is another game of GM Nakamura’s Crafty vs Nakamura, 2007. I was looking at it just a few days ago and CG.com was so nice to save it in my History list. For efficiency sake CVD has a similar game length limitation of 300 moves (ply 600) so it won’t help you with 363 moves (ply 726). The number and depth of variations is unlimited though.

Sure, CVD is available for Webmasters. Visit the home page and follow the instructions. Server side installation is as simple as it gets. If you have any problems send me and e-mail. We have been using CVD on www.chessdiscussion.com for more than 6 months now.

Mar-23-08  timhortons: thank you so much, i save youre link in my forum:)

Viewer Deluxe: <timhortons>, One practical solution for presenting a very long game is to split it in two (or more) sections. Here is an example of splitting “White to move and win in 517!” (first two games in the viewer) http://www.chessdiscussion.com/phpb.... To start the second section you need to take the last position’s FEN from the first section which can be easily done using CVD and a text editor.
Mar-23-08  timhortons: you really educate me on these, thanks a lot, now i knew that replayers still has limitations and theres way to deal with it, im really new to blogging, and posting games via a replayer.. thanks

Viewer Deluxe: Some of you may find helpful the thread “CVD advanced features” which I started a while ago here http://www.chessdiscussion.com/phpB.... I meant it to be kind of FAQ where tricky questions would be answered. Occasionally I do post new entries hoping that the time spent isn’t wasted.
