 | | WannaBe: <hitman84> Song by Don Mclean (guy) title is "American Pie" (No, this is not from the movie) and this is another song that I just absolutely love and (literally) bring me to a dead stop of whatever I'm doing and get me into a sing-along... Apparently this post is too long, I'll have to break it into 2 parts... Part I
A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.
But february made me shiver
With every paper I’d deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more step.
I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.
So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."
Did you write the book of love,
And do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so?
Do you believe in rock ’n roll,
Can music save your mortal soul,
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?
Well, I know that you’re in love with him
`cause I saw you dancin’ in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes.
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues.
I was a lonely teenage broncin’ buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died.
I started singin’,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die." |

 | | WannaBe: Part II.
Now for ten years we’ve been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin’ stone,
But that’s not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from james dean
And a voice that came from you and me,
Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while lennon read a book of marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died.
We were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."
Helter skelter in a summer swelter.
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.
Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
`cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?
We started singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."
Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil’s only friend.
Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that satan’s spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the music died
He was singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."
I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play.
And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.
And they were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."
They were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die."

| May-31-06 | | themadhair: Am I still the only one who thinks Paraguay will get through the group stages? |
|
May-31-06
 | | WannaBe: <themadhair> I'll have to check my record keeping spreadsheet. Will get back to you on that later this evening. =) |
|
| May-31-06 | | babakova: Paraguay does not impress me particularly, in my mind both England and Sweden have better teams. England has choked before though... |

 | | cu8sfan: Preparation games: Switzerland - Italy: 1-1. I hate the Italians, in the last twenty minutes they hacked at our players' knees and tried to take them out. We can be lucky if none of them is seriously injured. You just don't do that in a test game. |
|
| May-31-06 | | notsodeepthought: <cu8sfan> I didn't see the game, but, for what it's worth, http://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Nazio... had comments pretty much along the same lines - about the <Swiss> team...:
"Gli elvetici, <per nulla amichevoli>, interpretano la partita con impeto, <spesso troppo muscolare>, mostrando un'autorità impensabile." |
|
May-31-06
 | | cu8sfan: <notsodeepthought> O well, there are always two sides... If the Swiss play like they did in the first 45 minutes they need to fear no one. Italy had one single dangerous attack (in which they scored). Now they need to learn that a game lasts 90 minutes... (-: Germany - Japan: 2-2. In typical German fashion they were the worse team for 90 minutes but just got lucky somehow to score the equalizing goal. |
|
| May-31-06 | | notsodeepthought: <cu8sfan: Now they need to learn that a game lasts 90 minutes... (-:> "Niente di nuovo sotto il sole" - which, incidentally, would also apply to the German team and their bumbling way of salvaging a point from a dismal performance. |
|
May-31-06
 | | WannaBe: <themadhair> you and 3 others have taken Paraguay. :-) |
|
| Jun-01-06 | | notsodeepthought: 50 chessbucks that Paraguay doesn't make it! Oh, wait, wrong betting subject matter. |
|
| Jun-01-06 | | brankat: <WannaBe> Bad bunny. Very bad bunny :-) |

Jun-01-06
 | | WannaBe: I see, that for the National Open (http://www.lvchessfestival.com) that we are now up to 488 players total, and there are 42 players in my section (U1200). And the Ms. Polgar simul is up to 35 players!! (The web-site says, there is a 25 board limit.) Both <DrDum> and I entered long ago... Reminder to self, in lower section(s), players tend to be tactical, do not castle until last minute, or opponent has castled. I've been burned on this before. It is okay to play a game without castling, especially when I'm plaing black. |
|
Jun-01-06
 | | WannaBe: I also see that my previous opponents from American Open, L. Bartok and S. Bosch will also be there. =) It would be nice to see them 2 again. (They were my 2 of the 3 draws...) |
|
| Jun-02-06 | | brankat: <WannaBe> Re: the above "reminder to self". It is true that weaker players TRY to be tactical. Usually agains such approach the best response is solid/sound positional play. That will do it almost every time. Of course, this does require a measure of discipline and patience, so You don't allow Yourself to be dragged into the opponents' style of play. Besides, and this is important to remember, valid and promisinig tactical opportunities are based on solidly built position. |
|
| Jun-02-06 | | themadhair: <brankat>I think it goes further than this. If you are continuosly threatening things tactially then the game is easier for the weaker player to play - the old adage forced moves are good moves. Just improving your position and waiting for the chance to strike is a good policy. Although slowly pushing them off the board is more likely, but nevertheless effective. |
|
| Jun-02-06 | | Stevens: hey <wannabe> why do you say <do not castle until last minute, or opponent has castled>. just wondered what the bad experiences you'd had that made you come to this conclusion were? |
