 | | WannaBe: <Stevens> I've had games where I'm black, and once I've castle my king becomes a sitting duck. Perhaps I castled too early, but it always seem that I can't get my Q-side minor pieces and my rooks into action. There has been many games where my a8-rook never got a chance to move, and the game is already over. I think this is one of the reason I don't have a good record vs. the Austrian Attack when using the Pirc. I'm faced with a pawn storm and I just don't know how to handle it, and start making bad moves. |

 | | cu8sfan: Switzerland - China: 4-1. Hopp Schwiiz!!! |

 | | WannaBe: <cu8sfan> BabelFish wasn't able to translate Hopp Schwiiz... =( Got my new fridge delivered. :-) |
| Jun-03-06 | | Zebra: I have heard that in Swiss German they say "run" for walk and "jump" for run, but I haven't come across "hop" before. I am surprised Swiss chess players can still tell the difference between a Springer and a Läufer ;-) |
| Jun-04-06 | | midknightblue: hello wannabe. My section has 91 players registered. Silly me, I didnt look for any familiar names. I suppose it is possible that some of my HB global opponents could be in there. Not sure what I am looking forward to more, the chess tournament, or the time off work :) |

 | | cu8sfan: <Hopp Schwiiz> Hopp is a Swiss German word which doesn't really mean anything but could be translated to <Go Switzerland>. You use the word "hopp" to drive someone on, to make him hurry up and also to motivate him. <Zebra> It's true, we say "run" (rennen) and "jump" (springen) for "run" but use "run" (laufen) for "walk". How do we say "jump" then? We invented our own word ("gumpen"). Notice how it's very similar to "jump". (-: I read so many chess books in English that I hardly every say "Springer" and "Läufer" but use "Knight" and "Bishop" instead, or even "Knecht" and "Bischof". |

 | | cu8sfan: <Zebra> Springer vs. Läufer: For a Swiss German, it's very easy as the Springer really jumps over other pieces. So better ask a German how he can tell the difference between a Springer and a Läufer. |

| Jun-05-06 | | larrewl: <WannaBe> I hope it's not too late to change my guess. I'm now thinking Poland is more likely than Costa Rica to advance, and the same for Ukraine instead of Tunisia. My Revised First Round Predictions:
Group A: <Germany>, Costa Rica, <Poland>, Ecuador Group B: <England>, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, <Sweden> Group C: <Argentina>, Côte d'Ivoire, Serbia & Montenegro, <Netherlands> Group D: <Mexico>, Iran, Angola, <Portugal> Group E: <Italy>, Ghana, USA, <Czech Republic> Group F: <Brazil>, <Croatia>, Australia, Japan Group G: <France>, <Switzerland>, Korea Republic, Togo Group H: <Spain>, <Ukraine>, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia |

| Jun-05-06 | | Open Defence: <Got my new fridge delivered> how many bottles of Pinot Noir reside in there now ? |
Jun-05-06
 | | WannaBe: <Open Defence> You don't chill Pinot Noir. =) So zero. |
Jun-05-06
 | | WannaBe: <Open Defence> As a follow up, red wines (merlot, cabernet, zinf., pinot noir) are not served chilled, (recommended temp. is 50F - 64.4F) It's your white (chard., pinot gregio) or pink/blush (white zinf) that's served chill. (recommended temp. is 41F - 50F) And also, putting them in fridge is wrong. People have wine cellars (underground) to keep them slightly colder, not to chill them, like a fridge. You can buy http://www.compactappliance.com/xq/... that will specially store them. But who said you have to follow the 'convention'. Drink what you like! |

| Jun-05-06 | | Open Defence: <never put wine in the fridge> aaahhh forgive my ignorance and barbarianism..... |
Jun-05-06
 | | WannaBe: <Open Defence> That's not what I meant. Sorry if my post sounded that way. =( |
| Jun-05-06 | | suenteus po 147: <Open Defense> Actually, I believe it's barbarism not "barbarianism"...you heathen. |

 | | WannaBe: They're gonna do some ceiling/pipes work in the office for the next few weeks, and they're starting right over mine. So I'm boxing stuff up, etc... I never realized how much crap I've accumulated over the last 7+ years... =( |
| Jun-05-06 | | Open Defence: <wannabe> I hear ya... we moved house recently after living almost 20 years in the same house... trust me the junk pile was not pretty....however I found my C H O'd Alexander book on the Fischer - Spassky Match that I had misplaced.... |

| Jun-05-06 | | Dionyseus: I accept your challenge, <WannaBe> Here's my first move:

 | | WannaBe: <Dionyseus> You're using Rybka, I take it. This would be interesting, if nothing else. =) |
| Jun-05-06 | | Dionyseus: <WannaBe> Yes, I'm using Rybka 1.2n. |
| Jun-05-06 | | Dionyseus: <WannaBe> Can we go through the opening at a quicker rate (maybe 5 or 10 moves a day) than the rest of the game (1 move a day)? If not that's fine with me too. |
| Jun-05-06 | | brankat: <WannaBe> The tournament in Vegas is approaching. Try not to spread Yourself to thin now with to many games on various sites. It would be better to focus on the coming tourney. It is also a good idea to leave Chess comopletely alone 4-5 days before the start. |
Jun-05-06
 | | WannaBe: <Dionyseus> I can try, but I'm not using 'book'. I'm forcing the program to do infinite analysis on a position for a number of hours. 1. e4 e5 |
