Jan-17-06  RonB52734: They've played a highly aggressive game to this point. I'm glad it's taking them some time to find the next attack. We could use a tempo or two to further consolidate.

WannaBe: You will have a chance to watch the Denver-Pittsburgh game this weekend, counselor? Or you playing chess?
Jan-17-06  RonB52734: No chess this weekend. We'll be glued to the TV on Sunday.
Jan-17-06  RonB52734: Tonight begins the 66th annual Pittsburgh Chess Club Championship. 6 round Swiss (1 round on each of 6 consecutive Tuesday nights) one section, G/120. I'm assistant TD, and if needed I'll play as a "house" player so no-one gets an unwanted bye. That means I'm staying until the lights go out, and won't be home til midnight Eastern time. Have a good evening!

WannaBe: Still no move yet. we did ours, they are probably doing the same thing we did, make a move and sleep on it. =)
Jan-17-06  Robin01: Good luck in your tournament, Captain. G/120 is pretty good. Do you use a 5-second delay also?

WannaBe: Qd5 was played, believe <Robin01> has covered this line? And suggested Be7, I will do some examination...

Jan-17-06  sitzkrieg: I vote for Be7 though h6 maybe deserves consideration
Jan-17-06  NakoSonorense: I dont understand the purpose of Qd5. The next possible move for white might be Nb5 to attack our weak d-pawn, so I suggest moving our bishop from d7 to another square. Not to its original position on c8, or e6(?). Maybe f5 or g6. Since I don't see any real threat from white, i think that would be a good move for us to make. Another one would be Rc8, but Im more inclined towards <Bf5>. What do you guys think?

I dont like Be7 because we're not developing anything. quite the contrary, we're trapping our own queen on d8. Besides, later on we can move our knight to e7 to run off the white queen (after protecting our pawn on b7)

Jan-17-06  Robin01: Well, <NakoSonorense> I like your idea of moving our queen's bishop again, but I think it would be better to move it to g4 and attack the knight on f3. So 12...Bg5, if 13.Ng5, then we can play 13...Qd7. I think we are okay in this position, and our bishop controls the d1 square also, so white cannot put a rook on it. If white leaves the knight on f3, then perhaps we can trade our bishop for the knight. I think one of our goals is to eliminate pieces, since we are ahead in material. We just have to be careful.
Jan-17-06  Robin01: I like 12...Bg5 better than 12...Bf5
Jan-17-06  NakoSonorense: you mean 12...Bg4?
Jan-17-06  Robin01: I do not care for 12...h6. It is too slow and does not develop a piece. I mean, we can accomplish the same protection of the g5 square by playing 12...Be7. Also, we have to be careful of them playing 13.Rd1 and putting a lot of pressure on the d file. But, after 12...Be7; 13.Rd1, then I think we can play 13...Bg4 pinning the knight to the rook. So that is why maybe 12...Bg5 is good right away.
Jan-17-06  Robin01: <NakoSonorense> Yes, I mean 12...Bg4.
Jan-17-06  Robin01: I twice made a mistake of saying "12...Bg5" when I meant "12...Bg4". Sorry.

WannaBe: Okay, here is my study from the current position and what to expect...

I realize that white would like to activate the bishop, but I currently do not see any square that is good.

12...Nb4 13. Qxb7 Nc2 14. Rb1 Rb8 (loses a pawn, don't quite like this line.)

12...Be7 13. Be3/Bd2 <-- bishop doesn't attack anything.

12...Be7 13. Ng5 Bxg5 14. Bxg5 Qxg5 Qxd6 (white loses a piece) 12...Be7 13. Bg5 (transposes to above, white loses a piece) I consider the above 2 lines highly unlikely. Unless I am missing something.

12...Be7 13. Ne4 h6? <-- stops Bg5

These two lines are also unlikely...
12...Be7 13. Ne4 Bg4 14. Bg5 Bxg5 15. Nxg5 Bxf3 16. Qxf3 Qxg5 (16. gxf3 Qxg5)

still unlikely
12...Be7 13. Rd1 Rf8 14. Ne4 Bg4 15. Nxd6+ Bxd6 16. Qxd6 Qxd6 17. Rxd6 Bxf3 18. gxf3 Rxf3

Jan-17-06  NakoSonorense: I agree with your analysis, Robin. 12...Bf4 would be good. So, my vote goes to <Bg4 or Bf5> whichever gets more votes from you guys.

Wannabe, what do you think about my choices?

Did you guys read in <me to play> page that <chessgames.com> would like the game to be submitted after it's over?!

WannaBe: If Bg4, I think we should do also Rf8 too. in case of trading our bishop for their knight, we can piece up another minor piece or pawn.
Jan-18-06  NakoSonorense: thx, wannabe! Im thinking ahead. One day when I have my own av... [sigh] Lol

And yeah, i read that on <me to play>'s page. Cg.com must think that our game is rather good to make such a nice offer! :)

Jan-18-06  RonB52734: <Robin01> Yes, 5 sec. delay

Current position with board inverted to us:

Gentlemen: The problem with 12.Qd5 Bg4 13. Ne4 h6 14.Rd1 is that it loses a pawn, leaves us dead even in material, with White having better development. Of course, we could crack their kingside pawns with Bxf3 but I don't like it. I think in this line as long as we play h6 we avoid the mate threat they're dreaming of.

An alternative to this massacre is 12.Qd5 Qb6, and now if they persist 13.Ne4 (13.Rd1 is even worse for white) we play 13...Nd4 and we've defended our pawn, with some threats to boot.

If they change horses after 12.Qd5 Qb6 and instead play 13.Ng5, then 13...Nd8 is possible.

Of course, Qa5 is possible, but the benefits of Qb6 are that it protects the b7 pawn, thus freeing that N, and it pressures b2.

So I propose Qb6

Jan-18-06  NakoSonorense: Ron, I gotta say that I hadn't looked at Qb6. It sounds very good, too.

However, on your line <12.Qd5 Bg4 13. Ne4 h6 14.Rd1>, we don't have to move 13...h6; instead 13...Bxf3, which would leave them with doubled pawns, and we would still be a pawn up, so we would have a better position.

Jan-18-06  RonB52734: No, 12...Qb6 is troublesome after 13.Be3.

But 12...Qc7 and the same continuations as above.

I think this also works against 13.Nb5 because 13...Ne7 looks like it wins us a piece.
