 | | jessicafischerqueen: <dr.roho> Your conspiracy theory... it sound just nutty enought THAT IT MAY BE TRUE!! Say it ain't so, Joe! Remember when Arnold Rothstein fixed the MLB World Series by bribing <shoeless Joe Jackson> and 7 other members of the <Black Sox>? I'm suspicious now... BTW, if you're interested in the <black sox> scandal check out John Sayles' fine film <Eight Men Out> Jess |

| Oct-13-06 | | dr.roho: <JoeWms> Notice how I said nothing about that particular band. I said I am in <band> which is what the class is called at my school. No, sadly I am still here firmly planted in this state(Oklahoma)... |

 | | WannaBe: Don't know if any of these are true, but at least it's an interesting read. (Received via e-mail) In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are "limbs," therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the _expression, "Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg." As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October)! Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term "big wig." Today we often use the term "here comes the Big Wig" because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy. In the late 1700s, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The "head of the household" always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the "chair man." Today in business, we use the expression or title "Chairman" or "Chairman of the Board." Personal hygiene left much room for improvement. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, "mind your own bee's wax." Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term "crack a smile" In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt. Therefore, the expression "losing face." Ladies wore corsets, which would lace up in the front. A proper and dignified woman, as in "straight laced" . . . wore a tightly tied lace. Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the "Ace of Spades." To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead.
Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't "playing with a full deck." |

 | | WannaBe: Cont...
Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were told to "go sip some ale" and listen to people's conversations and political concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. "You go sip here" and "You go sip there." The two words "go sip" were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term "gossip." At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in "pints" and who was drinking in "quarts," hence the term "minding your "P's and Q's." In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem...how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a "Monkey" with 16 round indentations. However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make "Brass Monkeys." Few land lubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey." (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you.) |

| Oct-15-06 | | JoeWms: <WannaBe> Your fun post about word and phrase origins reminded me of a line I heard a few decades ago. It was in Monterey CA and I was dining at a table which was set close to the hotel bar. A college football lineman type was hitting on the sweet young thing seated at the bar beside him. I couldn't help but listen in. He knew the importance of being earnest, that kid did. "Honey, you just don't realize that <trivia is very important> these days." |

 | | Domdaniel: <ummm I dont believe in conspirecies(Did I spell that right) because > Umm, no, Doc, you didn't. It's 'conspiracy' - think: pirate, piracy, conspiracy. You might also want to take a look at 'payed equaly' and '3 our period'. These are also R-O-N-G. <say it ain't so, Jess...> |
| Oct-15-06 | | dr.roho: <domdaniel> I am still going to use me being 13 years-old as my excuse. But hey, I may spell horribly but I am in all honors with straight A's. I am so glad they dropped <SPELLING> as a class in middle school otherwise I might not have been able to say that previous sentence without lying... |
| Oct-15-06 | | JoeWms: <Roho> When you posted your conspiracy piece, you had seven misspelled words. A reader complained to you about the absence of logic in that writing. Another reader gently pointed out to you better ways to spell the words you had misspelled. You employed your usual comeback: "I'm just a 13-year-old kid." That posted comeback, Roho, had not a single misspelled word. Not one. The logic was fine. So was the syntax. Of course you are a straight-A student, Roho: You are a fast learner! Curiouser and curiouser!

 | | Domdaniel: Hi, Wannabe
thanks for the google/search tip in Ohio's forum.
Funny, I'd noticed before that CG posts often pop up on google. Must be true that 13 people run the world in secret from a lair deep inside this site... |
| Oct-16-06 | | brankat: <WannaBe> Thanks for the very amusing article/post on semantics. It sounds as if You had written the whole thing Yourself, that's how funny it is :-) |

 | | OhioChessFan: <Wannabe> what is the homepage for the site you posted on Kibitzer's Corner per mating with Knight and Bishop? |
| Oct-16-06 | | brankat: 15 posts to 9,000! Early congratulations!
You can probably whip it up in a hurry, perhaps tonight. Let the <Emperor> start sweating it out :-) |
| Oct-16-06 | | brankat: Oops!! Sorry, my mistake. It is 15 to 8,900 hehehe. Well, so much for my math :-) On the other hand, if You really, really pick it up, who knows! |

| Oct-17-06 | | Robin01: <WannaBe> Just to let you know I am now also registered on Gameknot. Do you know if there is going to be any prediction contests coming up anytime soon? I know we have the round-robin coming up with Polgar in it. |
Oct-17-06
 | | WannaBe: <Robin01> I'm gonna guess your name there is also the same as here? Prediction contests, I do not know of any that's coming up soon. I'm currently running a full-slate on GameKnot, with luck, I'll have a slot opening up soon, (in a day or two) my opponent really should resign. :-) Would you like me to challenge you to a game when possible? Knowing your time and schedule, it will be a move/2 weeks. Let me know if you are available to teach me a lesson. |
| Oct-17-06 | | Robin01: I am available for you. Challenge away. I will try to play faster. I should have more time available here shortly. What you want to do is get me in like a g/20 minutes or something one day. I tend to play not so good when the time controls are faster. |
Oct-17-06
 | | WannaBe: I've requested your name to be added in <percyblakeney>'s forum. I'll try to polish my opponent off ASAP. :-) |
| Oct-17-06 | | Robin01: Oh, and yes, my name is the same as here. Thanks. |
| Oct-17-06 | | Robin01: Your answer is awaiting you. Thanks. By the way, while on Gameknot, I was getting a awful lot of pop ups. Is this common? I usually do not get them on other sites. |
| Oct-17-06 | | brankat: <Robin01> <By the way, while on Gameknot, I was getting a awful lot of pop ups. Is this common?> No, it's not :-) You know <WannaBe> is an expert programmer, so I believe he inserted those pop-ups to mess up Your focus :-) |
