 | | Open Defence: <Wannabe> the indexing option is on.... My hard drive is 40 GB, Free space 27GB
RAM: 224MB Processor : 1.5 GHz
any thoughts on how i can speed things up... i removed a lot of stuff from the start up like Quick Time etc which i never use and i doubt the system needs.. (does Windows need it for anything ?) it still boots up very slow.. and is slow... |
|
Feb-11-07
 | | Open Defence: btw i used the disk analyser and it said i need not "defragment this volume" .... should I still run the defrag ? |
|
Feb-11-07
 | | Open Defence: I uninstalled a lot of programs that I was not using... seems to have made it a bit better |
|
Feb-11-07
 | | WannaBe: <Open Defence> Windows have a 'habit' of loading programs into RAM when starting up, and you can usually find the icons right next to the clock on your task bar. (Usually, there is the '<<' that you can click on and see what's loaded.) And yes, that does slow down the booting process. Adding RAM will help. If it says you don't need to defrag, then there's no need. |
|
Feb-11-07
 | | Open Defence: thanks <Wannabe> I removed a lot of unecessary start up programs and it seems to be a bit better now... i never have problems with it.. just that for this engine test game i want everything just right... :) hope to add RAM soon though.. i just hope i can get the right type.. |
|
Feb-11-07
 | | Open Defence: the trouble is deciding which RAM is compatible... my receipt from the dealer just says Compaq Presario 2013.. I have no idea whether it is a V2000 series or something else.. there is no 2000 series (without the V) but there is a 1500 Series and a 2100 ....the customer support # seems closed... |
|
Feb-11-07
 | | WannaBe: <Open Defence> Most RAMs are compatible, there was an age and time where one had to worry about things like that... One thing you can do/check is this, kinda of an 'idiot' way: Right click on 'My Computer' select 'Properties', select 'General'. That should tell you hwo much RAM is currently installed. Buy your new RAM, and be sure to check that little divot thing I told you about. Insert your RAM, and power your computer up, go back to the General tab, and see if the number of RAMs increased. If not, it's not compatible, return it. |
|
Feb-11-07
 | | Open Defence: k <Wannabe> but i dont trust the dealers in India.. they may remove parts and replace them with inferior stuff... so I am ordering the RAM online.. lemme check with support tomorrow and see what they say.. also check their return policy so that i can do what you suggested too |
|
Feb-11-07
 | | Open Defence: or unless i personally supervise the installation.. RAM installation does not take long does it ?
I understand all they have to do is install the RAM into the slots and no additional configuration or set up is required |
|
Feb-11-07
 | | WannaBe: <Open Defence> RAMs install, unscrew 2, maybe 4 small screws, see the back of your laptop to see. Open the small lid, insert RAM, make sure it's seated snuggly, close lid, insert the screws. Take maybe 20 seconds. |

 | | WannaBe: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070211... Goodness, some of these presidents will be in circulation longer than they were in office! |
|
Feb-12-07
 | | Open Defence: <Wannabe> re: RAM
thats what i thought.. so best then would be to take it to the shop see what RAM he recommends.. check on the divot thingy you mentioned and watch him install it so that he doesnt change anything else ? FOOL proof ? |
|
Feb-12-07
 | | WannaBe: <Open Defence> It's pretty complicated/hard to swap things out on a laptop. Unlike a regular (tower/desk top) computer where you can swap out nice graphics cards, sound cards, or even network cards... But the sound and graphics' quality would deteriorate, and it would be noticed. I guess watching the guy/gal do it would be almost as fool proof as I can imagine. |
