Feb-05-07 | | Chess Classics: 2 brilliant ones I completely forgot.
1. The Iced Tea commercial, with ECGC. I hope WannaBe didn't miss that, it was hilarious =) I believe it was in the 3rd quarter. The second best line of any commercial: "It's on the back of the bottle." 2. The Bud Light commercial with the classroom of foreign kids. In fact, the best line of any commercial: Teacher: "What do you say if someone asks YOU for a Bud Light?" Class: "No speak English." Regards,

 | | Open Defence: <Wannabe> despite all the Elmer Fudd and wabbit stew jokes... can you help me with a computer question ? I am thinking of upgrading the RAM on my wimpy laptop... it has a 1.50 GHz Processor per the System Information Win XP gives me.. how much is the optimum upgrade.. currently it has 256MB of RAM...secondly.. there is only one hard disk and it is not partitioned.. will partitioning it help ? or should I maybe invest in another hard disk ? |
|
Feb-08-07
 | | WannaBe: <Open Defence> On the back of the laptop, should be minimum 2 panels, one is larger than the other, and that one is the hard drive. The other one is the RAM. Take a small phillips head screwdriver, and open the smaller one. See that you have an empty slot first. When they build these laptops, the factory installed RAM is usually at the bottom, leaving the top slot open/available for upgrade. Once you have have verified that you have an available slot for RAM upgrade, then it's a matter of money. 256 is really too small, especially if you want to run Rybka or Fritz, and such. Judging from this page: http://shop3.outpost.com/catreq/974 I see that the cheap 'no name' are going for less than 80 dollars U.S. for 1 Gig. Or, if you feel brave, buy the paired 1 Gig, so you'd have 2 Gig for the laptop, (But you'd have to open the back of the laptop completely, and remove the original RAM from underneath, and install both. I have never done this. I have only slopped in a new one at the empty slot.) Do you have a reason to want to partition the existing hard drive? |
|
Feb-08-07
 | | Open Defence: <Wanabe> thanks!! the reason I thought of partitioning is that I was wondering if having a non partitioned hard drive was making my computer slower ? |
|
Feb-08-07
 | | WannaBe: <Open Defence> It can make it a 'little' slow, if you have a rather large hard drive, say something that's over 100 gig, and you have a lot of files fragmented. This will cause the hard drive to spin more while the file fragments are seeked out/read. The delay is very small, I mean we are talking about milli-seconds here... To see if your hard drive needs to be defragged, right click on your hard drive's icon -> properties ->Tools. In the middle is Defragmentation, click on the "Defragment Now..." button. A window will pop up, and left hand side is a button that says 'Analyze' click that. Read the recommended report. This will speed it up a 'hare'. |
|
Feb-08-07
 | | Open Defence: ok so partitioning it won't matter ? |
|
Feb-08-07
 | | WannaBe: <Open Defence> As far as making it faster? Not really... Operating Systems does a good job of knowning where the empty spaces are, and where the files are located. One thing to make it 'faster' is turn on file indexing. Right click on your hard drive icon, select properties, on the bottom, should be a box, that says 'Allow Indexing Service to ...' |

Feb-08-07 | | NakoSonorense: <wannabe> I need help, too. I've been thinkg about getting a TV tuner for my laptop, a HP Pavilion ze2000, but I have no idea which to get. Any advice/recommendations/suggestions/etc? |
|
Feb-08-07
 | | WannaBe: <NakoSonorense> TV tuner... um... haven't dealt with those. Do you know what models you're looking at? At least then I can start researching, possibly ask around the office. |
|
Feb-08-07 | | NakoSonorense: That's the problem, I'm a computer illiterate. I don't know anything about models or that kind of stuff. I only know about the price range, maybe between 60 to 120 bucks. |
