Feb-16-07  DrDum: Does it have to be an injury? How bout Ted Williams? Arguably THE Best hitter it baseball history who would have had the HR record IF he hadn't been drafted for the war during his prime and later also went to the Korean war. All that bad luck and he is only one of the best instead of THE Best
Feb-16-07  DrDum: In football I'd have to say Archie Manning I mean Marino did go to the Super Bowl his Rookie year

WannaBe: You are <DrDum> Ted Williams served in both WWII (beginning in '44 when he earned Marine's pilot wings) and again in Korea. http://www.militarymuseum.org/Willi...
Feb-16-07  brankat: <WannaBe> I saw in one of the forums You are playing in a Team Tournament this weekend, and Monday, too. I hope You'll do well!

We should "postpone" our planned game(s) for a day or two then. Unless You have forgotten all about it already :-)

We'll set it up next week, when You come back and rest(!!!) for a while :-)

Feb-16-07  NakoSonorense: Wannabe: Good luck in the tournament. If you get into a losing position, please don't resign too early!

WannaBe: <brankat> we'll start Monday, first few moves are all 'book' anyway.

<NakoSonorense> Thank you, the games will take place in San Pedro, which is a very short (5 min) drive from Long Beach.

I'll resign when it's absolutely hopeless. I only resign early on-line... =)

Feb-17-07  whiskeyrebel: Bad luck in baseball? There's Shoeless Joe Jackson who was banned from the game for life in spite of the fact that he batted .375 in the "Blacksox" scandal World series ( he was guilty only in my opinion and that of many others of not ratting out his cheating team mates ). There's Harry Haddix who pitched one of the greatest games of all time and lost! ( 12 2/3's innings of no-hit ball ). Vince Coleman was set to be the next Ricky Henderson until an outfield protective "rainout" cover vehicle crushed his leg. Moonlight Graham busted his tail to make the big leagues; he finally at the age of 28 made his debut in right field in a game in June of 1905; he never came to bat or touched the ball and was cut from the roster the next day. Was he lucky to have done that much? I don't think so. As a team the all time bad luck story is the 1994 Expo's who finally were the best team in baseball..kicking butt until the season ended in a strike. Perhaps their franchise might still be up there if not for that.
Feb-17-07  brankat: <whiskeyrebel> Impressive! And I thought You were into Alekhine and cult band level music :-)

WannaBe: Speaking of baseball, a game that I absolutely adore, and love...

Worst luck athelete, (non-injury division), it have to be Bob Hendley, who threw an one-hitter for the Cubs, and lost!!

Who was the winning pitcher?! None other than Sandy Koufax, on Sept. 9th 1965 at Dodgers Stadium. It was the night where Sandy threw his perfect game. But Bob isn't such a poor guy after all, his career record against Koufax is 3 wins, and 1 loss. =)

Can you imagine throwing an one-hitter, and lose?!?! And that hit didn't account for the winning run!

Another funny tid-bit, Harvey Keunn, who made the last (strike) out as a pinch hitter for Bob Hendley at Dodgers Stadium. Two years earlier, he was on the S.F. Giants team, that's when Koufax threw his no-hitter, and Harvey made the last out too!

You can read all about it, in the book "Sandy Koufax" by Jane Leavy.

Feb-17-07  DrDum: <Wannabe> Yes, the fact that he served was my point. How many his/Hrs would he have had if I Had NOT served was why I nominated him for bad luck athlete.

I know certain tournaments gives away brilliancy prizes, if they give best blunder prize, I'd be a winner every time.
