WannaBe: In case I forgot, congrats to them Lady Bruins. =)) U. Mich (69-63) won, but the last spread I saw was -6.5, so if you took UConn w/ spread, you got very lucky, if you bet on them U. Mich, I feel bad; the O/U was 148.5

WannaBe: <CIO> LOL. I remember those mems... <chancho> North by Norwest, totally agree, the audiences know that the plane scene was filmed earlier and played on a screen behind. It was still drama. Same thing with the Mt. Rushmore chase scene.

WannaBe: ¡Olé! ¡Olé! this is what I see for "¡Olé! ¡Olé!" (game of the day Mar-13-2026) I also know this issue have been around for a while, and it's not that important, in IT term, it is a level 'C', cosmetic fix. But I just wish to report it again. Can CG.com unify this ...

  WannaBe: Not yet... my strongest suspicion is still user priviledge to install/remove programs, but you have confirmed that you log-in to windows with adminstrator priviledge, so...

Let me do some more lookie-look.

  WannaBe: <chessmoron> check this link: See if any of the condition applies:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs...

Yes, it's for the SDK package, but I suspect something similiar may be happening for the JRE package.

Feb-20-07  chessmoron: <There are several possible reasons:

* Proxy server requires authentication;

* network connection fails;

* download manager software interrupts the download process, e.g., GetRight;

* TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs, like Norton AntiVirus, may distract the installation process.

To address these problems, please make sure third-party downloader/TSR programs are turned off and the network connection is setup properly. Also, if a proxy is in use, make sure that proxy authentication is turned off.>

How do you check proxies BTW?

  WannaBe: <chessmoron> If you are connecting via-through the University, the school may have proxy turned on.

For details on what a proxy-server is, Boston U. have a good FAQ (On their system/setup, but from a quick read, it can be applied to other situation/institutions).

http://www.bu.edu/proxy/questions.h...

HOWEVER! If you are on the inside of the proxy server, meaning, your internet connection is PC-> school proxy server-> outside world, it should not interfere with normal operation(s).

To see if you are actually connecting through proxy, in your (Internet Explorer) browser, select Tools-> Internet Option-> Connection

In the middle of the dialog box is the proxy server's setting.

If you strongly think this is the problem, you may try to contact your school's networking department/IT support.

Another thing you can try, to by-pass the proxy, (If it's really the proxy that's causing all this fuss)

If you have wireless, go off-campus, use a (coffee shop, bookstore) internet connection, and see if the same problem occurs. (It shouldn't...)

If I remember correctly, the default JRE or the SDK install program is fairly small, when you try to install, it then goes out and download the whole package.

Or you can just download the complete off-line install .exe file, which is what I usually do, http://developers.sun.com/downloads... Select JRE 6, and then select the off-line (12+ Meg) and see if that works.

Feb-20-07  chessmoron: When I click Internet Option...it doesn't respond, it quickly disappears.

  WannaBe: <chessmoron> ?! It quickly disappears?! I *wonder* if that's the school's way of saying don't modify your current setup...

And that you *MAY* be behind a proxy... I have no way of knowing/verifying that...

Again, I don't know if you ARE behind the University's proxy server, and I still don't know if it's the JRE or the SDK package you are trying to install.

But I know both offer an on-line and an off-line version.

The differences being on-line version, you download a small exe, then it goes out, and retrieve the full package.

With the off-line, you are getting the whole ball of wax, and then install.

Since the initial download was successful (and then these install issues came up), I'd say/recommend you do the off-line install.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Wilson> if you have no access to your "internet options" tab that means you don't have full control over your computer. You can't even properly clear your <temporary files Internet Cache> without the "internet options" tab.... <options> <view files> <click on first file> <edit: "select all"> <file- "delete">.

Good luck with solving your PC problems, looks like you're in good hands already...

  WannaBe: <jessicafischerqueen> His earlier post said he has full access...

But that's what he 'said', I have no way of verifying it...

The joys of remote tech-support! =)

Feb-20-07  brankat: <WannaBe> <Me: Check, Please!> What was the problem? It's only 13 years diff. Unless You thought she was too old for You:-)

Feb-20-07  chessmoron: <WannaBe> Thanks for the off-line exe file. Now it is in the download mode not the message popping up.

  WannaBe: <chessmoron> Read <jessicafischerqueen>'s post.

Also, the message still may pop-up when you try to install, I think <jessicafischerqueen> may have hit upon the ultimate problem:

You are not logged in with admin priviledges... But that's my guess...

Feb-20-07  chessmoron: Download is finished. Setup finished. Now testing. CG.com check. Yahoo chess check. All and all, looks fine to me.

I have spotted a mistake for my 4th round opponent, I was given a win, but I have sent an e-mail notifying USCF about the mistake.

Feb-21-07  who: How do I figure out my IP address on a PC? on a mac?

  TheAlchemist: Start menu -> run -> and there you write <cmd /k ipconfig>

  WannaBe: <who> On a mac, i'm not completely sure, but if you run one of the new OS, like OS X, you are in a Linux like shell.

Try ifconfig in a prompt window. Else, go into your network setup and it should show you somewhere 'properties' maybe? of your IP and MAC adress.

Feb-21-07  themadhair: The tip offered by <TheAlchemist> won't work in some situations like if you are connecting through a router for example.

Try this link http://www.webyield.net/cgi-bin/ip....

Feb-21-07  DrDum: With <Wannabes> adjusted point rating (1 instead of 2) our team is tied for 1st in U1400. wonder what third tie break is? http://www.geocities.com/colosseum/...
Feb-21-07  DrDum: This is all my fault. I was up a rook and massive position and achieved a draw against an opponent rated almost 600 points lower than me. that 1/2 point may cost us the victory all due to overconfidence and mental laziness
