Jan-23-06  Robin01: And at this point, any move they make is going to be complicated. Meaning, there will be no forced moves here.
Jan-23-06  Robin01: Anyhow, have to go. Be back later.
Jan-23-06  me to play: Hi guys, it seems we have hit a lull in the pace of the game. If no white move is posted by 6pm EST today, you will have the option outlined in my profile. Any questions, let me know. :)
Jan-23-06  RonB52734: Thanks, <me to play>. That seems reasonable. This is chess, after all -- what's the rush? :)
Jan-23-06  RonB52734: <Team> I must say, I'm beginning to like g5 as an attacking move for us, if we're given a chance to get it in. If I could "castle queenside" before doing it, I suppose I would. Obviously we can't. Well, we'll see. For now, I'm going to get into my buggy and roll home.
Jan-23-06  sitzkrieg: Safety first. G5 too early
Jan-23-06  me to play: <Dark Horses>
The 18th white move has been posted, but it was after the 6pm cut-off, so you have the option to post your response today or wait until tomorrow per the time control rules.

WannaBe: I say we post tomorrrow, stuck in a meeting right now, don't know when I'll check back, possibly 10 or 11 PM Eastern Time Zone.
Jan-23-06  RonB52734: White has played 18.Be3:

They win a pawn here unless we do one of the following immediately:

Bf6
Rd8
Qe6
Be6

Here's an example of what happens without one of those 4 moves: 18...a6 19.fxe5 dxe5 20.Qxd7 Kxd7 21.Nxe5+ Nxe5 22.Bd4! Now, once the e5 Knight is captured (even if we recapture), or once the e5 Knight moves away, the f7 Bishop falls.

WannaBe: I need to look at this more closely. Will report back later.
Jan-23-06  you vs yourself: <wannabe> Whatever happened to that meeting that was supposed to end by 11pm? Seems like you're still lurking around:)

BTW, who's your pick to win the super bowl? Dallas or 'sisco?

WannaBe: <you vs yourself> Actually the meeting has ended, prematurely. Because we found some design flaw in the software. Meeting will resume Wednesday after further design changes.

But I am still not able to post any of my analysis for my teammates until later. Since <RonB52734> offered 4 possible replies, I'd like to examine them closely.

Super Bowl? Dallas or 'sisco? What is this, 80/90s when they were power-house?? :-)

"Play-offs? Play-offs?" -- Coach Jim Mora.

I'll have to with my teammates' (in the voice of Chris Berman) Pittsburgh Steelas and the Terrible Towels!

Jan-23-06  you vs yourself: Steelers are my pick too. Their defense is awesome and their offense is very efficient. Seattle is a good team as well, but just not good enough.
Jan-23-06  RonB52734: Taking those one at a time

(a) 18...Bf6, and now if 19.fxe5 dxe5 20.Qxd7 Kxd7 21.Nxe5+ Nxe5 22.Bd4 Bc4 23.Rfd1 Ke6 and I think we're ok. We'd be up a whole piece, wide open position, bishop pair. If 19.Rad1 then 19...Rad8 and it turns into the same thing with an extra rook exchange.

(b) 18...Rd8, and now if 19.fxe5 dxe5 20.Qxd7 Rxd7 21.Nxe5 Nxe5 they cannot follow with 22.Bd4, because of the rook. If 19.Rad1, then 19...Bf6, and it turns into (a).

(c) 18...Qe6, and now if they simply played 19.fxe5 dxe5 20.Nxe5, then 20...Nxe5 gains a tempo and seems to hold as in 21.Qe4 Nc4. A different answer for them after 18...Qe6 would probably be something like 19.Nb5 (thrreatening the fork) 19...e4! or 19.f5 Qf6 20.Nb5 Kd7 and we may "castle" after all!

(d)18...Be6 and now if 19.fxe5, take with the Knight instead of with the pawn, 19...Nxe5 and this seems to come out even.

I don't see anything else at the moment

Jan-23-06  RonB52734: If I am correct that these are the only 4, then our task is to prove which of them are best/worst, including (i) if they play out the way I sketched, and (ii) if white has other replies that I haven't accounted for.
Jan-23-06  RonB52734: It is almost 9:30 here. I'm going to take a break for maybe an hour and then come back to this.
Jan-23-06  Robin01: This is very complicated already, but let's also take a look at 18...Nb4 and 18...exf4 here.
Jan-23-06  Robin01: After 18...Bf6 I do not believe they will capture, but rather play something like 19.Rad1, putting more pressure on the d file. But we can then answer with 19...Rd8. This looks okay I believe.
Jan-23-06  Robin01: After 18...Rd8, again I do not believe they will capture, but again play like 19.Rad1. We can then play 19...Qe6. This looks okay too.
Jan-23-06  Robin01: If 18...Bf6, 19.fxe5, 19...dxe5, then I think white will not trade queens but move the queen somewhere. This is why I do not believe white will capture on their 19th move.
Jan-23-06  Robin01: If 18...Rd8,19.fxe5,19...dxe5 I think we are good. Again, this is why I do not think white will play 19.fxe5.
Jan-23-06  Robin01: 18...Qe6, 19.fxe5,19...dxe5 looks good for us. If white tries 19.Nb5 we can just play 19...Rc8 and perhaps later chase the knight with a6.
Jan-23-06  Robin01: I have been looking at 18...Nb4, 19.Qe4, 19...exf4, 20.Bxf4, 20...d5. What does anyone think about this line?
Jan-23-06  Robin01: I do not like 18...Be6 because of 19.Qg6+.
Jan-23-06  Robin01: I kind of like either 18...Qe6 or 18...Rd8, but maybe we should analyze 18...Nb4 also.
