| Jul-05-08 | | metatron2: <WannaBe> just browsed in your forum and saw your java question. my real experience is with C++ and in last few years mainly in .NET, i guess i prefer working with a single company providing me all the core technology need (OS, framework, DB, IDE, web server, support, etc.) even if its kind of bad for competition :) but i also did some java work (and besides it is well know that .NET is based on java technology) so i think the difference between the two declarations is: the "String" literal cannot stand by itself and already has a String object that wraps it, hence the ' String a = "String"; ' declaration simply generates another pointer to that already created String object. on the other the declaration "String a = new String("String");" specifically creates another String object in memory that points to the same literal (since String objects are immutable, it is possible to share the actual character collections between different string objects in case they are identical). as for the other part of your question: i don't think compilers can optimize in such case since you gave a specific instruction to build a new String object in the second option. also i think that we still need to think about efficiency when programming even in our massive RAM age, since while RAM increases, the amount of users, the size of the data, the complexity of the applications, etc. increases too. and low level handling of declarations are the first thing to look at imo, since they are extremely common and are the easiest way to optimize if proper intention is given to them from the beginning. |

| Jul-05-08 | | angslo: <WannaBe: Personal favour...
I came across this question on a 'test' for job interview: Using Java, what is/are the differences between these two declarations: 1. String a = "String";
2. String a = new String("String"); >
in 1) it goes in the shared String pool and can be reused in 2), 2 string objects will be created - 1 in normal (non-pool) memory and 1 in shared string pool memory |

 | | WannaBe: <angslo> & <matatron2>, well, I do have another one, during the interviews, they seem to ask questions that's more indepth than taught at school, or what I actually practiced/used before at work... How can I catch up??
<mmmsplay10> The plan, is to throw your opponent off guard, by having them laughing so hard and long, their clock expires!! |
|
| Jul-06-08 | | angslo: <How can I catch up?? > <wannabe>, could u please elaborate on what kind of jobs are u looking for ? The question u asked about String - now these kind of questions belong to 'core java' .
So, regarding 'core java , perhaps ur question could be repharased like this , " I know core java but in interview they ask questions which r more indepth. How do i catch up?" Answer : for this SCJP exam book is the best resource, imho. If one knows core java , then in a couple of days one can catch up for interview by reading this book.
the question u asked about string is very well explained there and all in depth question on core java will get answered in that book (99% of interview questions on core java will get covered by that book. about the other 1%.. well about that later). ---
are we on the same track - am i answering ur question or u were looking for something else? |

| Jul-06-08 | | Ziggurat: <WannaBe> I think you want to spend some time with someone who is working in whatever segment of the industry you are interested in, and just sort of soak up the latest jargon. I have successfully weathered at least one interview (meaning, I got the job) where I was really not that clear on the technical details of the work they were doing. However, I knew how to "talk the talk" and dodge the details as much as possible :-) Once I started the job, it didn't take more than a couple of weeks to actually understand what it was all about. Just my two cents. |
|
| Jul-06-08 | | metatron2: <WannaBe> i think both <angslo> and <Ziggurat> gave you excellent suggestions how to prepare better to your interviews and considerably increase your chances to get the job,
however, if you are interested in doing some serious "catch up" and be able to actually impress your employers and colleagues from the start, you might also want to do some real work
that will get you "into the business". there are many open source projects today in Java that you can join, just pick your favorite subject and off you go .. btw <angslo> i always thought of you as someone who is more into "spiritual business" rather then comp geek like me. man, you are full of surprises :) |

 | | WannaBe: <angslo> well, aftern spending 10+ years with one company and within one industry, things/technology have kinda gone zooming past me, I know nothing about Spring, Hibernate, JSP, AJAX, and I have just begun doing research/learning of PHP on-line.... Lately, the companies I've talked to, they want J2EE, and I've only had J2SDK 1.5 experiences... That is what it is, in a nut-shell. I appreciate the advices I've received here, I'll follow them up. =) |

 | | WannaBe: <Ziggurat> I don't have a specific 'industry' that I want to get into... I spent the last 10+ years in the printer/driver/controller business. Change of pace 'would' be nice, but, I've dealt with printers, networking them, drivers for printers, PPDs, you name it... I've done it. This may be a disadvantage for me, because I'm so 'specialized' in one field, and it's difficult to find work in another computer related industry... |

How's business? |

Helllllloooo U.N., are you that stupid? |
