WannaBe: Holy Cow, Arizona is going to host the NFC Championship game!

Who'd thunk it?!?!

Jan-11-09  NakoSonorense: Did you see that delay-of-game penalty that wasn't called yesterday in the Baltimore-Tennessee game?

Why didn't the Titans challenge it?

WannaBe: <NakoSonorense> No, I did not see that play, I was working that shift. I don't think a penalty, called or missed can be challenged.
Jan-11-09  NakoSonorense: I read they missed the clock by 1.35 seconds, which in Football is an eternity. And it did seem like one when I saw the play live.

I didn't know that penalties couldn't be challenged. My NFL knowledge is very limited. :(

WannaBe: The two 6th seed (lowest seed) are still alive (Philly & Baltimore) while the 2 number 1 seeds (NY Giants, and Tenn. Titans) were eliminated.

The last time, the number 1 seed from either NFC or the AFc won the Super Bowl, was back in 2003-2004 season, when the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl.

It almost makes you not want to be the number one seed in the NFL.

On the other hand, last years NBA final, featured the number 1 seed from the East, (Boston) and the number 1 seed from the West (Lakers).

Go fig...

Jan-12-09  Travis Bickle: Hello Mr Rabbit. I finally got around to buying a new computer. Its a HP Pavilion Elite m9402f PC, with a 22 inch HD 2207h monitor. I must admit going from a windows millenium se to this is culture shock! hahah. You are the comp man so I thought I'd ask you a few questions if you have time. 1) this monitor seems so dam bright!! I went into settings and adjusted a litte. 2) I have patch cords for two different monitor types, 1 is VGA which Im running and the other is HIDEF, which the cords dont have any way to plug into the back of the tower. I imagine there must be an adapter I can get. This monster has 7 gigs of Ram 640 gigs harddrive memory. Plus its has AMD PHENOM X4 quad core processor. I know I know its overkill. I feel like I need to get a degree from Devry Tech to understand these comp functions. 1) other gripe is the monitor has speakers in the back of it and not speakers you can set on top. My question is I wonder do I have to upgrade to some kind of premium sound package, because the sound isn't very good. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks, Travis

WannaBe: <Travis Bickle> Not sure if I understand your first question regarding the monitor, if your plug is a traditional (pins) then it should be 'standard'.

If the plug is a white (usual color) and is not pin, but looks like a row of 2 by 4 (Or is it a 3 by 2) then it's them newer plug, if you don't have a plug for that at the back of your computer, then you may need to buy another graphics card that will utilize your monitor to its full potential.

If your sound system isn't very good, check with HP (at their web-site) for audio driver and/or upgrade. Another thing you can try, is use windows update, make sure your system have all the critical patches. And you may also find that Windows have an updated driver for your audio system.

Let me know if this actually clarifies anything, or just making things more confusing.

Good luck with M. Bradley & Cubs. I did not like him very much when he was w/ the Dodgers. And of course, his stay with San Diego was also quite 'interesting'.

Jan-13-09  Travis Bickle: <WannaBe> Thanks for your helpful advice! I went back to where I bought the computer. What I was told by the salesman was like you said, I would need to upgrade and spend alot more for a tower with the graphics card to support HIDEF. I also was told they didnt even have any models in the store with towers capable of HIDEF just VGA. I wasn't too happy because to my way of thinking these salesman should let you know if youre tower can support a HiDef monitor, and not just sell something that you can convert. Any way it is a nice system and I am enjoying even the VGA monitor. P.S. I downloaded fritz 11 that gives you 1 free year at Playchess.com as a member. At first when I tried to sign in to Playchess with a new handle I kept getting server is down. Then after a few minutes I received the message, "make sure your firewall port 6002 is open." How do I do this without compromising my security. I went to firewall settings and typed playchess and add port 6002. This has worked to the point of allowing me to play as a guest but I cant log in as a new member? I wrote them twice but the Germans havent wrote me back yet.

WannaBe: <Travis Bickle> Go to Start->Help and type in "Firewall open port" it should then give you instructions. Like 7 steps...
Jan-14-09  NakoSonorense: Since you are in computer-thinking mode, I'd like to jump in with a question of my own.

I had very little free space on my HD (~2G) so in order to get more space I made a backup of all important files and formatted my computer.

I did just that and everythig was good, until I tried to install the "Application and Driver Recovery" CD, the one that comes with the computer when you buy it. I put it on and surprise, my laptop didn't read it! I tried and tried but it's just dead.

So I had to borrow an ethernet cable to connect to the internet because the wireless thingy wasn't working (apparently that gets installed with that CD) Sound was out also.

I went to the website ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/... )and downloaded some of the stuff they have there. I managed to get wireless and the sound back on, but I'm still missing stuff. For example, when I try to put my laptop on Standby Mode, it just won't let me. I go to "Turn off Computer" and I can see the button, but it's shaded and I can't click on it.

Also, when it's on, the little fan underneath (and who knows what else, the processor or sumpin) is spinning very fast as if I were running a software that requires lots of memory (my computer is old). It's also a lot slower overall. :(

I don't mind the sound of it so much, but I really need to get the Standby thing going again since I use it very often... How can I do it? And is there a way to bring back to life that Applications CD? It doesn't have a single scratch... I don't know what happened.

WannaBe: <Nako> From what I read, here is what I understand...

Your hard drive is too small, and you backed up the important files. And you reformatted the hard drive.

You then tried to re-install the Operating System, by using the Application and Driver Recovery CD. (Which is not the same thing as the Recovery Disk), maybe you can find that??

You need to install the Operating system first, (XP? Vista? Or earlier version? You said your PC is old, but I didn't get more details than that...)

You are currently on the internet (because you are posting...) Can you find the original operating system disk? Or the OS recovery disk? Because I do not think the Applications and Driver CD is gonna work.

And I am also puzzled as to why your wireless and sound would be back working, but not your stand by/shutdown option...

Never heard a case like yours before. Are you still at UCLA? Have Winter quarter started? If worst comes to worst, I can come up there, and we can do lunch/blitz before/after I repair your PC.

Jan-14-09  NakoSonorense: I installed the OS already. I have two CDs. The first one formats the HD and installs Windows XP. That one works.

The second one installs all other applications, like Adobe and DVD Player and others which I don't know. The label on that CD reads:

"Application and Driver Recovery DVD
Contains software and drivers already installed. For software reinstalation, repair, and reference only."

It's not like I haven't done this before. I've formatted the HD a few times and I've never had any problems. But now that CD isn't working and I had to install everything manually from that website.

Wireless and Sound are back because I downloaded 1) Conexant CX20468-31 AC97 Audio Driver and Audio Driver EQ; 2) Broadcom WLAN Network Adapters Driver; and 3) WinFlash Utility for HP Notebook System BIOS - Windows-Based all of them from that website on the previous post. (I don't know why I downloaded the 3rd one... but I did. The first two made sense since I didn't have either of them)

<Never heard a case like yours before> I never cease to amuse you with my computer ignorance, do I?! :)

Winter quarter started last week, so the pace is relatively slow right now. We can do blitz/lunch anytime... Just let me know! :)

Open Defence: hey <Wannabe> there was no response to my apology... I hope things are cool.....

WannaBe: <Nako> So, the issue is that it won't let you go stand by (and/or sleep) mode?

I do not think it's because of the Application CD, if anything else, it have to be the Operating System Restore Disk (the first CD/DVD). If you have the time/patience, try to reformat the hard drive (use full reformatting, try not do that quick reformat...)

See if that possibly can bring back the Stand By/Sleep Mode option in the drop-down.

  Open Defence: thanks <Wannabe>
Jan-14-09  NakoSonorense: Yes, it just won't let me go stand by at all and I use this feature a lot because because I leave my laptop on most of the time. I find it very strange that the standby mode was disabled after the installation. I even went to "Monitor Power" (right click - properties - screen saver) to see if there was something there but I couldn't find anything.

But it's not only that. Overall it got very very slow and it's not running as smoothly as before.

I'm going to do the full reformatting this weekend. That might just work.

If it doesn't, I have my hammer ready and I won't hesitate to break it to pieces. Then, I can just steal one from Powell. :)

Thanks for the idea.

WannaBe: <just a kid> I thought Arz. had no chance against Atl., Arz. won, I thought there's no way Arz. would win in Carolina, they won.

I don't think they have a chance against Philly... (Now, watch, they'll beat the Eagles at home...)

I'm rooting for Pittsburgh, because of my (only) buddy, <RonB52734>...

So, of course, we are looking at a Balt. vs. Ariz. Super Bowl!

  jessicafischerqueen: Happy <Corus> Season, <MannBee>.

Are you still mad at me for raving like a lunatic during the <Caissars>?

Sorry to put you through that.

I won't be doing a repeat performance next year, just to set your mind at rest.

I almost asked you a computer question about how to <really> clear out so-called "temporary files" but I found out how to do it first on the Internet, ironically enough.

WannaBe: <jessicafischerqueen> There are way(s) to clear out the temp files, one is manually, that is going into the temp folder and erase everything.

(But you may find files that is in use, and unable to be deleted. Or go into the Internet Explorer's options tab, and check the box that will clear your temp files on exit).

But you already have figured that out. =)
