Mar-23-09  NakoSonorense: <wannabe> So you were actually happy that UCLA lost? How could you? Whatever happened to the unconditional and blind support and love to your alma mater??

Anyway, a fourth final four appearance was a little too much, I think... Still, it would've been nice that we have swept our bracket during my 4 years here... :-(

WannaBe: <NakoSonorense> Yes, I support UCLA full-heartedly, but I also know that this year's team, is not even close to what we had for the last 3 years.

Now, Cleveland St. upsetting Wake Forest (I had Wake in the final four) was a big!

Help!

Oh no... My PC was clean for so long.

My latest scan with

<AVG 8.0 Free> told me that I have <three Trojan horses> and it can't fix them.

Please help me?

These are the horses:

<first one>

Object name: C Documents and Settings default Local Settings Temp DWPUpgradeInstaller.exe

Detection name: Trojan Horse Generic13.LNA

Object type: File

SDK: Core

<second one>

Object name: C Documents and Settings default Local Settings Temp DWPUpgradeInstaller.exe$IAy_toolbar.exe

Detection name: Trojan Horse Generic13.LNA

Object type: File

SDK: Core

<third one>

Object name: C Documents and Settings default Local Settings Temp DWPUpgradeInstaller.exe$IAy_toolbar.exe$IK

Detection name: Trojan Horse Generic13.LNA

Object type: File

SDK: Core

OK I've been trying to research this on the WEB but the advice is all over the map and I don't understand even a 10th of it.

When I try to click on <Remove all Unhealed Infections>,

My computer goes "Bink" and this box pops up, telling me that--

<Moved Object is Bigger than the Archive Size Limit>

There is a button on this box that says <Go to File>, and when I click on it, it takes me to the infected file- All 3 Trojans are in this file:

C:\Documents and Settings\default\Local Settings\Temp

And so are hundreds and hundreds of other folders and files.

Absolutely hundreds...

So questions:

1. How can I get rid of these Trojans? Is it safe for me to try to just manually delete the infected items from the file? Or might that destroy my operating system?

2. What is the downside of just leaving them on my PC unhealed? (like I have any choice in the matter at the moment)

If you have any kind of information I'd really appreciate it.

I'm hesitant to take it to my PC repair guy as he doesn't speak a word of English and I don't speak a word of Korean.

I don't understand why these unhealable Trojans just came up on my PC--

It's been a year and a half here and nothing like this has ever infected my computers.

Help!!

I'm panicking.

Is it time to panic?

Mar-27-09  Eyal: And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, come and see.

And I saw, and behold a <Trojan Horse Generic13.LNA>: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a <C Documents and Settings default Local Settings Temp DWPUpgradeInstaller.exe$IAy_toolbar.exe> was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. (Revelations 6)

jessicafischerqueen: that's not very funny <Eyal> I'm beside myself here.

I'm hamstrung from even getting a professional to clean this infection by the insurmountable language barrier in this country where not a single person is <actually really> bilingual.

Plus the <automatic update> on my Windows Security Panel keeps "shutting itself off" no matter how many times I turn it back on.

Mar-27-09  Eyal: I'm sorry, Jess... you're right - that was very insensitive of me (I would delete the above post if I could, but it's too late now). Actually, I've had my share of computer problems, but never one related to viruses/trojan horses. Don't lose heart - I hope you manage to solve this soon.

jessicafischerqueen: It's ok <N'Swaba> I was just feeling overwhelmed by the huge amount of conflicting and incomprehensible "fixit solutions" offered by various tech support forums.

If you are not PC literate, it's very frustrating.

As a "front loader," I can only be safe doing the most simple operations.

I can't be manually deleting files or messing around with my operating system or registry or I could wreck the machine.

I've just downloaded a tool that I used once years ago to delete <Horses> that my <AVG Free> couldn't delete.

Although I'm pessimistic at this point.

If the Horse is in a file so big that the AVG can't even fit it into a vault- a file that contains tons of stuff my PC needs to operate-- I don't know how to get rid of it.

Also I don't know how the horses got in here in the first place.

Frankly, I suspect the Daegu school board of sending me an infected email because it's run by the most retarded incompetent retards in history.

Although I suppose that's what everyone thinks about their boss.

Except <MannBee's> employees of course.

WannaBe: <jessicafischerqueen> Okay, I deleted my previous post, because when I read back on it, it was really silly...

If they are in your temp folder, go ahead and erase them. It's okay, nothing is going to happen to your system and/or that folder.

Detail: You can (in Internet Explorer) select Tools->Internet Options->Advanced, and one of them (hundreds) of boxes, is clean out temp folder on IE exit. I always have that selected...

The temp folder is really nothing, it is where Windows store 'stuff'...

I am using AVG 8.5.285, you may want to upgrade to it...

By the way, if you connection is 'high-speed', (e.g. DLS, Cable TV speed...) have you thought about a router?

jessicafischerqueen: <MannBee> thanks for your time and your help!

I tried your method, but it didn't work.

I bought a new laptop yesterday, but I'm keeping it in "reserve" until I can figure a few things out first.

The other AV programs I ran don't detect the three Horses-- only AVG 8.0 Free detects them.

Could it be a "false positive"?

I kind of doubt it.

I looked into the AVG upgrade, thanks, but it costs money to buy the AVG 8.5 series.

I'm not against spending money on security, but long term I want to buy the security from a <proper nerd> in a <proper computer store> who knows what is, and is not, compatible with Vista.

In the mean time, I will carry on with my poor old infected XP lab dog, which I'm typing on as we speak.

Thanks <MannBee>!!

(I may try to get this computer here cleaned by a professional- but the language barrier is horrendous.

For example, "Can you please try to clean my infected PC" might be understood as "Can you put my PC in a washing machine".)

  jessicafischerqueen: <MannBee>

Thanks so much for the extra info and links.

I'm going to uninstall my AVG and then do a "clean install" of the latest updated free version.

Then I'm going to run it.

I am hoping that my "three Trojans" are a false positive.

Reasons I'm hoping:

1. I ran <four> other Virus programs and none of them picks up the infections. Only my AVG does.

2. The AVG free forum, as of this morning, is full of people reporting this new infestation of <Trojan Horse generic 13. ____> infections. The "big honchos" at the free forum suspect they may be false positives.

So I'm really hoping that installing the latest version of AVG will show I'm not really infected.

Or maybe the AVG team will discover if its a false positive and make an update patch to correct the error.

Ok I'm crossing my fingers now- I don't want to have to take my computer in if I don't have to.

Thanks <MannBee> and please keep me updated if you learn any more news.

  jessicafischerqueen: Heh....

<MannBee> well I will not be satisfied until I solve this mystery.

After getting an updated AVG free and running it, then if it still shows the Trojans I'm going to download <Avast> and see if it recognizes them.

Right now, <Lavasoft, A Squared, Super Spyware Blaster, Ahn lab Platinum Security, Malware Detector, and MacAfee> have been run on my old computer and not one of these programs was able to identify the three trojans.

They only show up on my old AVG.

I will find out more about this after work.

Thanks for all your help!

I'm still trying to get to the bottom of this.

I just uninstalled my AVG free home edition, and right now the latest version of AVG free home edition is downloading on my old computer.

I understand there was a AVG free home edition Virus data base update on March 29th as well.

Anyways after work I will be able to install and update and then scan again.

But if you have even 10 minutes, here is a short thread from the <AVG free forum> showing that many others have had the exact same thing happen-

Some version of <Trojan Horse Generic 13> is being reported by their AVG Frees, but if they scan with a different product no infection comes up:

http://freeforum.avg.com/read.php?4...

So the people on this thread are all hoping it's a false positive, but the "answer" seems inconclusive right now.

<MannBee>, how is it possible that ONLY AVG Free shows these "infections" and NOT ONE of the other AntiVirus products or AntiMalware products finds these infections?

Doesn't this mean either that AVG is reporting a false positive, or that AVG is the world's best at finding infections?

I'm just wondering. I used a <MacAfee Pro> scan even = the kind you pay for-

And it didn't find these infections.

Also, the <number of objects scanned> by the <MacAfee product> was much, much lower than the number scanned by other products.

Ok forgive me for going on and on about this but you are actually the only person I know personally who really knows Computers.

WannaBe: <jessicafischerqueen> According to the latest posts, on the forum link that you provided, it is a false positive, and it have been fixed.

Oh my Goodness thank you thank you!

Imagine my relief. I'm just now scanning with the updated <AVG free home edition 8.5>.

It's just gone past the file system where it "found" the three Trojans and this time, no infections found.

It was a false positive it seems.

HOORAY!

My "old" computer is clean.

And not only that but I panicked and ran out and bought a new computer so now I have two "clean computers."

Something else good came of this- I discvoered the <EMSI A-Squared> product which swweps for <VIrus-Trojan-and Malware>-

There WERE some problems with my old computer- which is why I was panicking about the "Three Trojans"-

A: Sometimes the CPU would start whirring and running like mad- and when I tried to shut off my computer, the computer WOULD NOT SHUT OFF. I had to press the manual shut off button.

So you know what- my <A Squared> product, unlike any of the other products I've been using this past week, found 14 (yes 14) "medium and high rated" Trojan infections.

It healed these infections.

Ever since, my computer has been operating "properly" as far as I can tell.

So I think that the <EMSI A-squared> product may be the best <Trojan hunter> available at the moment?

I also counted tne <number of objects> each product scans, and the <A-squared> scanned the highest number of objects.

WannaBe: <jessicafischerqueen> Thanks for the info on EMSI A-squared, I will have to look into it. =)
Apr-02-09
Premium Chessgames Member
jessicafischerqueen: Well yes, my dear <MannBee>...

You know <CNET> and <PC World> are two fairly decent sites to compare security products, IMO.

Because both sites have a reliable team of experts who actually test the products against each other- and also there are many, many <user reviews> that are often really helpful.

CNET is good because it shows the percentage of how many visitors to their sites downloaded a given piece of software.

On the other hand, I think the EMSI a-squared might be one of those "best kept secrets" on the Net.

I've long suspected that <MacAfee> is junk-

Anyhoo I'm going to put <a squared> on my new computer as well.

Now the challenge for me is to find a really good firewall to put on my new computer.

Unfortunately, <zone alarm free>, which I've had great success with for a decade, is not compatible with <Vista> at the moment.

Although I understand the <Vista Windows> firewall is greatly improved over the <Windows XP> firewall--

The <Windows XP> firewall is a joke, as you probably know.

The fact that you can install every other firewall in existence on your XP Puter and it will never conflict with the XP Windows firewall is a bit of a giveaway.

Of course it never conflicts because the Windows XP firewall consists of some cardboard and bits of tape- which doesn't present a lot of configuration problems.

So if you hear of any good Firewall- either free or Pay version-- that goes weill with <Vista Windows>-- please let me know.

<Norton Symentec> is right out though--

My "year with Norton" was awful.

What an intrusive program- Also I do not trust the vendors.

I think they are snakes and they put all kinds of gratuitous code into their programs that makes their software incompatible with a whole pile of programs they don't want you using.

Because they only want you to use software they sell you.

What kind of program can't be uninstalled unless you download an uninstall program from the company that sold you the program in the first place?

<Norton Symentec>, that's who.

Anyhoo, if you hear of any scuttlebut please pass it along.

Thanks <MannBee>!!
