Jan-28-06  RonB52734: I would be very worried about ...Bf6 and ...Qe7 because of the chance of their Rook pinning our Queen to the King. Plus, after ...Bf6 they can gang up on our d pawn with Ba3 and Ne4.

Some thoughts I have are ...Bg6, which prevents f5. It also either forces exchanges or forces them to move their Queen to safety. It also opens up our f Rook.

Another idea is ...Rd8, since they cannot play Bb6 any more. This, too, indirectly forces them to move their Q.

WannaBe: If we move 21...Bf6, white may also decide to swing the c1 bishop out to a3 and get 2 attackers on the d6 pawn. Then we may have to reply with Rd8, also, by 22. Ba3 it takes away the ...Nb4 move.

But I think we have looked at the possible ...Nb4 move, but it didn't lead us anywhere in development.

I think I see 3 possibilities, Bf6 to defend e5. Bg6/Nb4 to chase white queen around some more, or Rd8.

white can also play 22.Nd5, but I'm not sure what that would accomplish for them.

WannaBe: white's knight can possibly go d5 then to c7. If they're thinking along those lines...

tpstar: <WannaBe> I ran our Scotch Game through Fritz and posted it V Spassov vs K Haznedaroglu, 2005

You played very well, and note Fritz found improvements for both sides, so it's good to review all your games afterwards (wins and losses). You were doing well until 14. Nb3 which lost a Pawn, then your Nb3 and Bf2 wound up being posted very passively, so the transition from the opening to the middlegame is crucial. I should have played ... a5 earlier, when your Nb3 was undefended so your Pa2 couldn't move, but I wanted to develop my Rooks first. 25 ... Re1+ was an exchanging combination, since 26. Kg2 holds everything and now Black has to convert the endgame.

Good luck in future games. =)

tpstar: <WannaBe> Our Sicilian game is here Browne vs Wojtkiewicz, 2004. Apparently 8 ... Nbd7!? should be met by 9. g5 molesting the Nf6; I played the mainstream 9. Qd2 instead.

Remember to not get discouraged by losing. It takes hundreds of losses to improve, and even the very best still lose. Try to learn something productive every game, no matter the result. Then in time, you'll gain some nice wins in your collection to balance those out. =)

Here are the possiblities that I can see...

21...Bg6 22. Qc4 Qxc4 23. bxc4 <--pawn structure.
21...Bg6 22. Qd5 Qxd5 23.Nxd5 Bf6
21...Bf6 <-- gets an extra defender.
21...Rd8!?
21...Rc8!?

Jan-28-06  Robin01: So they played 21.Bc1. We should definitely look at 21...b5 here. It stops the bishops from coming to a3 for one. It also allows us to expand on the queenside.

WannaBe: <Robin01> I like it, I like it. Good eyes, good eyes!
Jan-28-06  RonB52734: ...Bg6 has the following effects:

First, it forces a response. Responses are:

Nd5 simply trades Queens and minor pieces. That's fine.

Ne4 blocks up the middle and allows Bxe4 (d5 doesn't look good here). It also may allow a later Rf5 to help in the middle.

Q to d1 or d2 allows either Rf5 or Rd8.

Q to e2 or e3 removes the whole problem of their R challenging our Q. Several moves are possible here.

Qd5 allows exchange of Qs, but we'd then need to prevent Nc7, which we can do.

I'm heading out now until mid- or late-evening.

Jan-28-06  Robin01: Both 21...Rc8 and 21...Rd8 look okay. I guess 21...Bg6 is okay also, but there is something about it I do not like. Just call it a gut feeling. I like that bishop where it is now, aiming at the d5 square. I really like 21...b5. I do not want white's bishop on a3. I vote for 21...b5.
Jan-28-06  NakoSonorense: I agree wtih Robin01. Rc8 and Rd8 look fine. Im especially inlined towards Rd8 just in case they decide to take our pawn we will have a discovered attack on the queen after 22...dxe5
Jan-28-06  Robin01: <NakoSonorense> I voted for 21...b5. I think it is the best move here. We need to stop the white bishop from going to a3.
Jan-28-06  NakoSonorense: oops! I overlooked that! :)

In that case, I, too, vote for <21...b5>

Jan-28-06  RonB52734: Yeah, I'm good with b5 also. I'll vote for it.
Jan-28-06  Robin01: The hour grows late. I think we have to post our move sometime prior to 6:30 a.m. EST. It is time to drift...zzzzzzzzzz
Jan-28-06  RonB52734: I will post the move before I go to bed tonight. We have a clear majority.

WannaBe: we can recapture with knight, then knight takes, pawn takes.

Or capture with pawn, then they don't have to recapture.

Jan-29-06  Robin01: I think taking with the pawn is better. For one thing, we do not want our knight pinned to our queen.

WannaBe: Taking with the pawn does open up for a potential Rd8, and if need be we can play Bf6 to add extra protection. or play Bb4...
Jan-29-06  sitzkrieg: Id also say hit with the pawn, that way we also keep an eye on d4 with the knight.
Jan-29-06  RonB52734: Clearly they don't currently have enough firepower on the e5 pawn to come out of this ahead in a straightforward massacre on e5. There has to be either an in-between move or another attacker, or some kind of deadly attack after the massacre, or they are simply content to exchange in order to have a pin on e5. (Something like 22...dxe5 23.Bb2).

I sure don't see the in-between move or deadly follow-up attack. If they're going to add another attacker, it's either the Queen (which is fine for us because it keeps the value of exchanges in our favor) or else it will take at least 2 moves to bring it online. That gives us time to react.

Looking ahead, I believe we need to keep the dark-squared bishop on the a3-f8 diagonal for the foreseeable future, and at the moment (I confess) I like the light-squared bishop on the a2-g8 diagonal.

I vote that we re-take with the pawn.

Jan-29-06  RonB52734: Excellent. We only need to hear from <Nako Sonorense>.
