jessicafischerqueen: <MannBee> I'm very happy to hear that you managed to win this round against <MICROSOFT: GUTLESS VENDORS OF EVIL>.

I will hold off on Windows 7 until the last possible moment.

I'm not even adding <Vista Service Pack 2> because I've researched it extensively and it adds nothing I need for what I actually use my computer for.

Luckily, <MICROSOFT: GUTLESS VENDORS OF EVIL> have promised to support Vista for another five years, last I read.

Actually, if you read the instructions, they are quite simple/obvious, a lot better than some of the instructions I've seen regarding editing your registry entries... =)

Never fail to amaze me that big companies still can't get the simplest things right... Attentions to details!!!

Oct-26-09  Jim Bartle: Yes, that's criminal, especially when somebody else is anxious to buy those tickets. This owner Snyder is just the worst imaginable. He came into the NFL boasting he was going to show everybody how it's done. And now he's got an absolute loser in one of the most football-mad cities in the country.

Tonight they gave up a 60-yard TD run on the second or third play, then a bit later tried to pass from their own 4, and had it intercepted and trotted in for another score.

Good perspective from a fan from childhood in The New Yorker: http://www.newyorker.com/online/blo...

"The issue is not the team’s performance on the field, dismal as that is. It is the culture created by the owner—one of greed, expediency, and mean-spiritedness. The general atmosphere around the team suggests Zimbabwe—a failed state, an intractable dictator, and an impotent and suffering populace."

The 49ers had a period like that in the late 70s, when a jerk named Joe Thomas ran the team. Fortunately the deBartolos bought the team and installed Bill Walsh as coach.

WannaBe: Pick of the week, Oreg. State (-9) vs. UCLA, take the Beavers...
Oct-27-09  A.G. Argent: <WB> What's the spread on the Ducks - Trojans?
Oct-27-09  dakgootje: Trojans are the -3 favorites. ml is -150 / +130
Oct-27-09  A.G. Argent: What!? USC is favored in that game?! In Eugene?! With Oregon playing the way they are?! Now, that's a pick-of-the-week. I'd say it'll be Ducks by seven, probably more.
Oct-27-09  Jim Bartle: By some major screwup my cable system let me watch USC-Oregon State on Saturday, and though a good team, USC did not look like a national powerhouse to me. A solid team like Oregon playing at home could take them.
Oct-27-09  dakgootje: <What!? USC is favored in that game?! In Eugene?! With Oregon playing the way they are?! Now, that's a pick-of-the-week. I'd say it'll be Ducks by seven, probably more.>

Certainly not. This seems to be what is generally called a sucker bet. Certainly, it could easily be Oregon will destroy USC, but I've seen way too often lines that looked too good to be true... and upset happened. Not saying you should take USC, but always be careful.

Remember: Vegas isn't going broke since they aren't stupid.

Oct-27-09  Jim Bartle: Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't sports books set the line so that they will get roughly equal amounts bet on both teams? That way they're sure to win on the betting commissions.

I don't think bookies really try to win by picking a winner and betting on it.

Oct-27-09  dakgootje: <Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't sports books set the line so that they will get roughly equal amounts bet on both teams? That way they're sure to win on the betting commissions.>

Certainly. See the Yankees - Phillies series bet which openend up at around -190 for the yankees I thought. Yankees always get bet big and for some reason few take the Phillies serious so with such huge lines they will get more equal action on both sides.

However, what I said earlier on about sucker bets doesn't contradict what you said.

There are often lopsided games when looking at the amount of people on both sides. I don't know whether or not the amount bet on both sides is lopsided as well or whether there are a couple of sharps on the side with the smaller amount.

I do know the general public is almost always on the side with the most bets and that those look almost always too good to be true.

Ergo, the point is not really whether the bookies make those lines at all by trying to pick a winner (if so, probably only to a limited extend) but mainly that you should watch out with such games.

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> It is UCLA @ Oregon State, and USC @ Oregon.

Yes, bookies/Vegas wants equal amount of money on both sides, team or total score, and collect the vigorish.

USC already played Oregon State, last Saturday, at the Coliseum, in LA.

Oct-27-09  Jim Bartle: Sorry, I was unclear. I did get to watch OSU-USC last Saturday and was not overly impressed by USC, at least by their standards of the past few years.

A little off-topic, but has anybody noticed that none of the megastars of the USC teams from a few years ago has become an NFL star. Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and Roy Williams received so much praise back then, but none has really justified being taken so high in the draft.

Oct-27-09  A.G. Argent: Jim,<..not overly impressed...> that entered in heavily in my surprise that USC was favored to win in an extremely tough venue against a red-hot Oregon who has already beat a then #6 Cal and UCLA down there and then last week, in Seattle, embarassed Washington, who has been giving others all they can handle as well as beating USC. USC did indeed have their hands full at home against unranked OSU. You're right, they just ain't the juggernaut of years past and yet they're #4 this week. But the Ducks are #10. So, in any event, it should be a great game. And on Halloween night in already crazed Eugene? Whoa.
Oct-27-09  Jim Bartle: Is Oregon still wearing those horrid yellow uniforms?

Oct-27-09  Jim Bartle: Only the yellow one seems really bad.

Is Oregon still big in track? I remember twenty years or so ago the whole US track world revolved around Eugene, especially distance running, and the meets just sounded like some of the coolest events anywhere.

The only negative was the athletes were handicapped by having to use gear from a local startup company.

Oct-27-09  A.G. Argent: <...local startup company.> Yeah, Phil Knight, UO alum, founder and CEO of Nike and major contributor to UO athletics, with his hand in everything Duckish.
Oct-27-09  A.G. Argent: And Oregon does still seem to be the center of the NCAA track and field universe. That don't seem to change. Past boasts like Steve Prefontaine and Alberto Salazar to name a couple of famous runners. Others, I'm sure, but I dunno.
