If you question my height/weight, you can consult <NakoSonorense> who have seen me in person, or any number of other members who also have. =) http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/201... |

 | | WannaBe: I usually don't get upset, at least not letting people get to me... Tonight, I was on FICS, and was playing 10/0 <UNRATED> game... 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Bc4 e6 4. 0-0 a6 5. a4 Nc6 6. d4 cxd4 7. Nxd4 Nf6 8. Nxc6 bxc6 9. e5 Ne4 10. Re1 d5 11. f3 Nc5 12. b4 Nd7 13. Be2 Bxb4 14. Bd2 Bxd2 15. Nxd2 0-0 16. f4 f5 17. c4 Rb8 18. Qc2 After my 17th move, my opponent sent me a chat, 'turn your engine off'... I promptly gave my opponent a piece of my mind and then some, and resigned. I was at least a good 40 sec. behind on time, I've faced Rossillimo attack before, but that 5. a4 caught me by surprise, and I had my knight running for cover later on. Knuckleheads... |

| Nov-27-11 | | GilesFarnaby: <WannaBe: 4. Why do you want to go with the VM Option?? For simple chess stuff? If you have any other question(s), feel free to post them on my forum, I'll do my best to confuse you more than you can imagine. I'll throw out more alphabet soup than Campbell, I'll give you more choices than a candidate in an election year, I'll give you more options than a QB running the wishbone!!> Is not that <I want> to run it, is that I am really sick of Windows, and thus I was thinking about getting Linux but, additionally, I consult my database very often and run several hours per day of chess analysis, and if that is too difficult to achieve with Linux I think I will rule out the option (of changing to Linux, that is) |
|
Nov-27-11
 | | WannaBe: <GilesFarnaby> Tell me what database you're running, what you're trying to accomplish. Yes, there are many, many options out there, but without knowing a full 'spec', if you will of what you want to do, I really can't give you a good opinion, at best. |

| Nov-28-11 | | GilesFarnaby: <WannaBe:...> I use Chessbase 11, but I could change to something equally crappy if neccessary, as long as I can still handle my opening database (a .pgn with ca. 500 openings with its respective annotations, diagrams and stored analysis with my super killer novelties) and the mega-database (more than 4 mill. games) For the analysis I use dual core Houdini 2.0 normally, although I also have FireBird and Rybka 4 in the rearguard, just in case. Best wishes,
G. Farnaby |

 | | WannaBe: <GilesFarnaby> Linux are pretty nice OS, SuSe, Redhat, don't know which flavor you have in mind. The other nice thing about Linux is that you really don't have dink around with multi-core CPUs. But you do have to dink around with other settings, it's not quite as automatic as say, Windoze or Macintrashes. As far as GUI, not too sure about UCI and Linux support. Have you looked into it? I know with commercial softwares such as Shredder, Fritz, etc, you have the UCI and all you need to do is go to Engine->Add/remove engine, and voila, it's good to go. Not too sure if commercial chess software support Macintrash or not. But highly doubtful on tablets, don't care what OS it's in. As far as the size of your database, it's only a text .pgn file, I would not worry too much about it, especially if you have a system that have 4GB or higher. This should be plenty to keep your OS, engine's analysis plus what nots happy and chuggin' along. 2GB might do it too. Again, the PGNs are nothing but text anyway... As you can tell, I am a Windoze person. =) |

 | | WannaBe: Alright, any more discussion posts on Caissar? Any one else would like to contribute their 2 cents worth? (This was such a hot, hot topic, too.) |
|
| Nov-29-11 | | hms123: <WannaBe> The (Caissar) ball is in your court and in your capable hands. Some of us (me, for one) are willing to help if you can figure out what you need us to do (but taking over is not an option). |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: I still don't see the need to disqualify non-English posters. <hms123: My reason is a simple one: I would like to recognize those contributions that have the widest potential availability to the users of the site.> Sounds good but doesn't work in practice. The Caissars are basically a vote - and what a vote measures is <actual> reach, actual respect, actual popularity. This is built into the system - as long as the Caissars are decided by a vote, they can never measure potential anything. I can see why there should be <some> basic rules, like "no nominating for Best Game Collections someone who doesn't have any". But beyond that, telling people who they can and can't support seems rather against the idea of a popular vote, and doing so in just one or two categories seems highly arbitrary. It's pretty clear this sudden call for a "no non-English posters" rule is a reaction to <Iskubadayb> winning Best Analyst last year. I'm not sure why that was ever a problem - it's as if some people felt he wasn't a deserving winner, but in a public vote, who is and isn't a deserving winner is decided by the public! You want someone else to win this year, post a lot of very good analysis :-) |
|
| Nov-30-11 | | hms123: <Switch>
My next sentence was:
<If someone sees the results of the Caissar awards and wants to read the analysis, or the writing, or what it means to be constructive or helpful on the site, then that user should be able to follow up by reading the posts made by the winner of a category.> Nonetheless, if the consensus is that a vote is a vote, then that's fine with me. It is also fine with me that <Iskubadayb> won an award last year. I just wish I could read his analyses and learn from them. In attempt to <Switch> the topic, can I nominate a Game Collection with only 1 game in it? Or is there a minimum number of games necessary? What if someone foolishly nominated me as <Best Chess Historian>? Do I have to decline or would I be disqualified for not ever having posted anything relevant? I think these sorts of questions are at the heart of the discussion: should there be constraints or not? Again, either way is fine, but I do think the awards would benefit from some reasonable constraints. Perhaps you are right though, and the answer lies in getting more votes, not through lobbying for individuals, but through better marketing. The newsletter announcement should help in that regard. |

|
| Nov-30-11 | | hms123: <WannaBe> Good point. It's lucky for Obama that he won it at the time. There's no chance that he would win it now. |
