 | | tpstar: <How to cut your health-care bill: Pay cash> Some background considerations. First, for hospitalizations, insured patients are routinely charged double the actual cost to silently cover any uninsured who pay zero; Obamacare was supposed to fix this "funny money" element but did not. Second, paying up front in cash, even at a greatly reduced amount, saves time and hassle trying to collect on a claim which may take months to over a year, for no reason than the insurer will delay for months to over a year. Third, this accounting trickery in medical billing leads to some surprising results. If I perform a service for $200, and receive $100 for it (insurance claim or cash), a normal person would think that I just made $100, whereas an accountant would say I just made $0. Then if I perform a service for $200 and receive $0, a normal person would think that I just made $0, whereas an accountant would say I just made -$200. These negatives are used to our benefit to reduce income tax burden. I have several straight Medicaid patients who are assigned to another doctor, yet they prefer me so they pay cash each time; I charge the lowest level with a 30% discount. Another surprise is that I cannot selectively charge $0 for patients, or write off their co-pays, as both are considered fraud. I must process the charge and then write it off later as bad debt. The mark up for health care and procedures has always been ridiculous. |

 | | WannaBe: <thegoodanarchist> Don't really like to deal with puts, the only two times I did puts was with WFM when that asparagus water news came out. Made very little money on the two transactions.
Have $9 covered call (CC) on X with 3/18 expiration day. Looks like it will make it, but with a little over a month to go, it's hard to predict. If it doesn't get called, I'll sell another CC for X. =) |

 | | WannaBe: In a totally (funny) unrelated news, there's now a GoFundMe page for Kanye West: https://www.gofundme.com/kanyesmedi... Target amount, 53M, that's right <MILLION>; total raised thus far, $900.00 Nine Hundred smackers. That's all?! |
|
| Feb-17-16 | | Jim Bartle: From that page: <Kanye West, prolific entertainer/fashion icon/celebrity/member of the Kardashian family needs our help!> "Member of the Kardashian family." The Kardashian has many millions of dollars which they have "earned" basically for nothing. Why not get some cash from them? And he's not really $50 million in debt. That's money he's invested, and maybe hasn't worked out. But he's got plenty of cash. |

I thought I had some free money with a GE CC but my shares got assigned in December. :=( |

|
| Feb-18-16 | | Jim Bartle: My favorite is still a pair of headlines in the sports section from the Oakland Tribune cerca 1970. At the time A's owner Charles Finley decided to sue Oakland, and tennis player Margaret Court had gotten pregnant. Lefthand headline: "Finley Takes It To Court."
Righthand headline: "Court Pregnant, To Take a Break From The Tour." |

 | | WannaBe: Stupidity of people:
An otter at a Canadian zoo died of drowning because of a pair of pants was dropped/left in the enclosure. No idea if anyone was fired for this.
Crowd on a beach saw a baby dolphin, so they decided it was cool to pick it up, take some selfies and pass it around. It died of exposure and dehydration. |

 | | WannaBe: Ucla lost a tough one at home to Utah by 2 pts. Bruins are now 14-12 over-all, 5-8 in Pac-12 conference play. Highly unlikely Ucla will make it out of Wednesday's play-in round of Conference Championship. (Top 4 teams get bye to round 2, 8 remainders play each other to determine who advances to Thursday play). NIT?! |

|
| Feb-19-16 | | Jim Bartle: I used to enjoy going to college baseball games. They were cheap (almost free), I was close to the field, there wasn't too much noise so I could hear the teams jawing at each other (a lot), the players were good but not great and you could see how hard baseball is to play, and there were still a number of outstanding players to see up close. The only thing I didn't like was a lot of the pitchers didn't have real good control, so there would be many, many balls thrown. But when you see guys like Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina, Jack McDowell or Mark McGwire pitch up close, it's impressive. (Johnson was a big offender for not throwing strikes, but the speed was scary.) |

Feb-19-16
 | | WannaBe: <JB> Especially if you don't mind the aluminum 'ping' of the bat. =)) For a game at Jackie Robinson, General Admission is $8, and you are so close to the field... Last year when Ucla visited Sunken Field, GA was $7. We sat on the grass and just enjoyed a great afternoon. |
|
| Feb-19-16 | | Jim Bartle: Yeah, I don't like the aluminum bats. They hit the ball too hard, even when hit off the label. It doesn't seem like good training for the major leagues, for hitters or for pitchers. Why doesn't MLB supply wood bats? It would cost less than money paid to players who aren't as good as they look hitting with aluminum. I saw the Giants play an exhibition against the Giants in, I think, 1982. Jack Clark, Chili Davis, Joe Morgan, Darrell Evans, Jeffrey Leonard, etc. borrowed the bats during batting practice, and it was scary. Fielders would need to wear armor if MLB permitted them. Morgan hit a ball and jumped away in pain for hitting the ball off the label. The ball still cleared the fence, and the players were just staring. In the game itself Clark hit the longest non-McCovey HR I ever saw. (With a wood bat. I fear what would have happened with an aluminum bat.) It cleared the centerfield fence. It cleared the upper fence surrounding the "sink" in Sunken. It cleared a service road. It cleared some bleachers and landed in an intramural soccer game. Amazing. |
