WannaBe: <sitzkrieg> Your TV showing season #1, #2 or #3??

By the way, not to ruin your viewing pleasure, he always saves the world, just like Bond, James Bond. But unlike Bond, Jack's cloth just gets dirtier and dirtier. (Man, imagine, 24 hrs without going to the bathroom =)

<DrDum> is a big fan of the show, I don't much care for it...

Feb-21-06  Cogano: <WannaBe> Sorry about that. I just thought I'd inform everyone that they posted their move. & I don't know who this Jack Bauer dude is.

To all, meaning <Dark Horses> members: Sorry to bother you again. For those who noticed, I had an earlier post that I deleted, because it contained a faulty line. Anyway, I thought I'd share with you another option for White that they may consider, assuming you follow my line & move the bishop to e5:

39.Qxb3 Be5, 40.Qd5 (with the delusion of threatening both rook & bishop) Re8, 41.a5 Re7, 42.a6 Kb6, 43.Qa2 (as opposed to 43.Qc4 to protect it now & when/if they later move it further along the a-file!)Bf6, followed by Ra7 or Rxa7, depending on what they play. Notice that as soon the King got near the pawn, White essentially lost it. They can't go to e6 with check & thus protect the pawn as well, because of our rook at e7.

On the other hand, they may just abandon it after Kb6. Play could continue like this: 43.Qd2 (aiming at g5) Kxa6, 44.g4 Bf6, 45.Kg2 (the only way to advance the h-pawn is to protect it by the King. King or Queen must protect one pawn & the other piece the other pawn, as well as strike
at the g5-square. Only the Queen can effectively protect a pawn & strike at a square, & perhaps even shield the King while it is protecting the h-pawn) Re5, 46.Kg3 Kb6 (no point leaving him on the edge!), 47.h4 Kc5, (they can always check our King rather than advance their King & pawns. But that just wastes time. With the bishop firmly on f6, protecting & protected by the g7-pawn, & for so long as our h6-pawn is striking at g5, & for so long as our rook is on e5, from where it CAN'T be dislodged, since it's protected by the bishop, then their pawns are useless & will fall. They can try to stall, but that just gives us time to bring the King closer to our pieces where he can seek shelter!)

Please consider the lines I've posted. They give us very good, winnable chances. Thank you as always, for your anticipated & continued patience, tolerance, understanding, consideration & assistance. Take very good care & have a great day. Cheers mates! :)

Feb-21-06  Robin01: I see they have posted. I will relook at this position again later this evening.

WannaBe: Key things I want to bring up from this current position.

1 -- We no longer have a white squared bishop.

2 -- White can queen the a-pawn, and a8 is a white square, hence, to stop/block/prevent we have to use K or R. It might cost us the R.

3 -- I believe white will divert all resources to Q-side and trade that pawn for our R and get a Q vs B ending.

Things to consider...

1 -- Is it possible to get a perpetual with our B + R? If possible, how difficult?

2 -- 2 pawns vs 2 pawns on the K-side. Doubtful that we can promote one of them. Even if we decide to sac our R and B. That would be a very hard task to accomplish, not impossible.

3 -- Can we cut off the white's king from adv. to Q-side? Example, Re8. And can we stop that pawn with B + K while our R is keeping an eye on the K and a8 square?

Will post some actual analysis/possible lines later...

Feb-21-06  Cogano: <WannaBe> Since the points you posted interest & concern you, you may want to invest some time to examine the lines I posted. They stop the a-pawn AND White's King-side pawns. You may prefer my latest line because it has the rook on e5, keeping their King back! But check the other lines too. You may find them likelier or more efficient or whatever. Anyway, take very good care & have a great day. Cheers mate! :)

WannaBe: <you vs yourself> We're too scared... If I lose any more pts, it'll go into the negatives! :-)

Plus my available time (as stated in the Cafe yesterday) is Wed. approx 6:30 PM PST.

Feb-21-06  you vs yourself: <WannaBe> Just logged out. Boy, that was a rough stretch. Won 2, lost 6(?).
Feb-21-06  Cogano: <Dark Horses> Members: Okay, I'm sure you're just about ready to roast me alive & be done with my babbling already, once & for all. But I hope you'll forgive my "wobbling" because the latest line I posted is actually a disaster. So please disregard it. After further consideration, I'm now convinced that lovely <Robin01>'s idea of 39...Rf8+ is the best idea we have now. It prevents the Queen from going to f7 & wins us a tempo because White will move their King for a change! We could then continue with something like:

39.Qxb3 Rf8+ 40.Kf2 Bc5, 41.Qc4 Kd6, 42.a5 Re8+, 43.Kf3 (Best to stay near the pawns & guard them!) Re7.

& the pawn is lost because all the checks in the world won't drive our King from our bishop & thus the rook will continue guarding the 7th rank & won't be prevented from going to a7 or capturing there if White actually push the pawn all the way there!

White at that point could abandon the a-pawn & start advancing Kingside. Play could continue like this:

44.Qf4+ Kd5, 45.h4 Bd4, 46.Kg3 Bf6, 47.Kh3 Kc6

(we don't need the King on the Kingside, so long as the h-pawn, bishop & rook are there to battle for g5!)(Notice too that either the Queen covers the a-pawn & the a-file or attacks the g5 square, to assist the Kingside pawn advance. EITHER, NOT BOTH!)

48.Qa4+ Kc5, 49.a6 Kb6, 50.g4 Re5, 51.g5 hxg5, 52.hxg5 Rxg5

Excellant position. The g7-pawn protects our bishop on f6. Our bishop protects the rook on g5. & both bishop & rook protect the g7-pawn itselt. Meanwhile, With the King on b6, the Queen is glued to the a-file or the a-pawn is lost. But that pawn is lost anyway, because regardless what White plays next, we play Ra5. Now it's bishop, rook & pawn vs. Queen. The odds are heavily in our favour.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE review this line. I know you're busy. So I understand if you merely glance at whatever else I wrote or ignore it altogether. You have your priorites. That's fine. But please review this one line. I would most sincerely appreciate some feedback regarding it, especially criticism. For it's far better that you wound my ego (well, would you look at that: that line you're so proud of, the apex of your creation is, after all, & in reality, nothing more than hogwash. So why don't you just take it & stuff it!), which I can take (my ego is quite microscopic), rather than you glancing at it, deciding that it looks promising then cursing me because we sustain heavy losses (if not lose the game itself) because of my oh so "bright" ideas! As always, thank you ever most kindly for your anticipated & continued patience, tolerance, understanding, consideration & assistance. Take very good care & have a great day/night. Cheers mates! :)

  WannaBe: <Cogano: ... 39.Qxb3 Rf8+ 40.Kf2 Bc5, 41.Qc4 Kd6, 42.a5 Re8+, 43.Kf3 (Best to stay near the pawns & guard them!) Re7...>

This line isn't correct, once Rf8+ white's king can't go to 40. Kf2

WannaBe: Alright, looking at this Re8 vs Rf8+ possibilities...

if 39...Rf8+ 40. Kg1 (Ke1, Ke2) those are the only logical moves, nothing else makes sense.

I think it will be 40. Ke2, because 1) it's now on a light square, our bishop is on dark square. 2) it can help out in promoting the pawn, but I can be wrong.

If 39...Re8 we can cut off the K from crossing over. And if, 39...Ke8 40 Qf7+ Re7. The rook is backed up by the bishop and also prevents Q from taking out g7 pawn.

Then we can move the our king to capture the a-pawn?! But it will leave the R+B to defend each other and the g + h pawns...

Difficult decisions... Anyone else have ideas?

Feb-21-06  sitzkrieg: It is season 3 in NL, we are not that far behind:)
I like this season quite a bit.

WannaBe: I foresee white slowing moving their pawn down the a-file and using the queen as a ram/blocking piece.

As long as the Q occupies b or a file doesn't look good for us. Another possibility is Rb8 driving the Q off the b-file, then maneuver our K to a-file and block the pawn.

WannaBe: Nevermind that R to b file move... it sucks.
Feb-21-06  Cogano: <WannaBe> Sorry, I meant Ke2. Thanks!
Feb-21-06  Cogano: <WannaBe> Just because I made a mistake & wrote f2 as opposed to e2 doesn't mean the whole line is wrong & useless. Your assessment, with all due respect, is too dismissive & unfair. My line more than adequately addresses the points that concern you. If you think it's wrong, demonstrate what's wrong with it. Show different play for White, in response to the moves for Black that
I posted. I'm trying my best here. I could just make a suggestion per move: Kc7, Rf8+ whatever. But I don't. I try my damned best to come up with an entire winning line. The following moves are equally important & relevant to me as the move we have to make now. I think my line deserves fairer, more open-minded consideration than I feel you've afforded it. At least that's how you've made me feel. I did say to criticize, but you only criticized that one lousy move & based on that condemned the entire line. That's just outright unfair & intolerant. I sincerely hope I can expect more decent & considerate treatment from you in the
future. Take very good care & have a great day. Cheers mate! :)
Feb-21-06  you vs yourself: Unexpected turn of events here! <WannaBe> has some explaining to do:)
Feb-21-06  Robin01: I vote for 39...Rf8+.

Here is a line I looked at and we are still holding on. 39...Rf8+; 40.Ke2, Re8+; 41.Kf3, Rf8+; 42.Ke4, Re8+; 43.Kd5, Re5+; 44.Kd4, Ra5. And like I said, we are stilling maintaining here.

Feb-21-06  Robin01: Now, looking at the previous line I just mentioned, white might be able to capture our two king side pawns by playing Qf7 now, but it looks like we can pick up white's "a" pawn and probably at least one of white's king side pawns in return. The lines get very complicated. However, it seems to give us a chance to hold the position.
Feb-21-06  Robin01: <Cogano> <39...Rf8+, 40.Ke2 Bc5> I do not like the move 40...Bc5 because white can reply 41.Qg3+ and it seems like we lose a pawn with no compensation.
Feb-21-06  RonB52734: I just got home. I didn't play, but it should be the last night of my apprenticeship as a TD (I miss playing!!)

Well, there seems to be little doubt that Rf8+ is the move du jour. I'm going to sit down with my Russian friend and analyze it for a bit right now.

Feb-21-06  Robin01: This position does not seem too difficult to analyze, however, due to the many checks available to the white queen, it is taking a lot of time to go through all the variations of moves and checks the white queen has availabe to it. So I feel it is a very time consuming position to analyze.
Feb-21-06  Robin01: <RonB52734> <Russian friend> I sure hope it's Mr. Spassky!
