  WannaBe: <blingice Re: Fischer's storage books/articles.>

I just know the seller, that's all. :-)

Feb-22-06  RonB52734: <40.Ke2 has been played.> I continue to think 40...Re8+ should be next.

Feb-22-06  Robin01: I also think Re8+ should be played next. However, I will look at it some more later.
Feb-22-06  Cogano: My sincerest apologies to all for all the trouble & confusion. & alas, I never got any sleep last night (food poisoning & complications). So I'll just get to the point.:

39.Qxb3 Rf8+, 40.Ke2 Re8+, 41.Kf3

(saving us a tempo because that gives us a chance to get the rook to the 7th rank that's worrying us out of our minds!)

41...Re7, 42.Qd5

(I tried to select/find the White move that would most complicate things/make things difficult for us. But that's not to say they're going to play that move!)

42...Be5, 43.Qc5+

I'm too tired to think beyond that point. I hope that helps. Take very good care & have a great day. Cheers mates! :)

Feb-22-06  RonB52734: <Cogano> I am still fatigued myself from having a cold and from other things that have made demands on my time. Your post does not leave me entirely clear what you vote for as our 40th move. Can you help me?
Feb-22-06  RonB52734: <42...Be5, 43.Qc5+> I think 43.Qc5+ may be a perfectly good reason why we'd like something better than 42...Be5. Of course, that is in the future. Right now we are looking at 40...?
Feb-22-06  RonB52734: In fact, if 42.Qd5, I would want to look long and hard at 42...Rd7.
Feb-22-06  RonB52734: It seems to me from the last few days that keeping our K+R+B very very close to each other in the middle of the board is best. They protect each other and protect key squares the White Queen wants. They minimize the ability of the White Queen to use the open board for forks.

  WannaBe: I'll vote Re8+
Feb-22-06  RonB52734: <WannaBe> Me too.
Feb-22-06  RonB52734: I would like to say (in addition to "thank you to the producers, my agents and the screenwriters") that I'm amazed this game has gone to 40 moves. I think the game is worthy of the database. I think (as I said at least 10 moves ago) that it looks drawish. The only difference now is that I doubt Black has winning chances. So be it. With this long time control and the skilled players on White's team, I'm happy to be at move 40 with drawing chances as Black.

WannaBe: =) ain't over yet, might still draw... look at topalov-aronian game yesterday!
Feb-22-06  Robin01: <ain't over yet, might still draw... look at topalov-aronian game yesterday!> That's correct. Ain't over till the skinny lady hums!:)
Feb-22-06  Robin01: I vote for 40...Re8+ also.
Feb-22-06  Chess Classics: <WannaBe> I invite you to the blah, blah blah...you know what I'm talking about.

Regards,
CC

Feb-23-06  sitzkrieg: I go with Re8 also. And I am happy about the game so far too. Even if we dont win, it is quite entertaining and you have to admit we have seen some nice tactics.
Feb-23-06  RonB52734: Ok, we have 4 votes for Re8+. Cogano, please indicate your vote. We have until 5 p.m. EST to move.
Feb-23-06  Robin01: If you look at the line Cogano presented above, his 40th move is Re8+, so I guess we can assume that is his move also.
Feb-23-06  RonB52734: <Robin> ok, I agree. I think there's really little doubt at this point it's the move to make, so I'm going to make it.
Feb-23-06  Cogano: <Ron> I sincerely am sorry for not getting back to you earlier. My health wasn't co-operating (stomach troubles amongst other things)! Anyway, I'll get straight to the point. You, <Robin01> et all were right.

I VOTE FOR 40.Ke2 Re8+

TWO LINES TO CONSIDER:

Line #1) 39.Qxb3 Rf8+, 40.Ke2 Re8+, 41.Kf3 Re7, 42.Qd5 Be5, 43.Qc5+ Kd7

(Stalling. d6 & d5 are the best squares for our King)

44.Qb5+ Kd6, 45.g4

(Trying to divide & distract our forces by advancing on both sides of the board. But that's only a delusion!)

45...Rc7, 46.Kg2 Rf7, 47.a5 Rc7

(It looks like useless repetition. But,
the point is to stall, & allow the pieces to get to their most ideal squares. I'm using their pawn movements to do that.)

48.a6 Bd4, 49.Qd3 Kc5, 50.Qg6 Rc6, 51.Qh5+ Kb6, 52.h4 Rc5, 53.Qg6+ Bf6

(Note: King is close to a-pawn, Rook covers 5th rank & Bishop & h-pawn cover g5, in addition to the Rook!)

54.Kg3 Rc6, 55.Kh3

(Seemingly wasting time. But, if 55.Kf4 or 55.g5, Be5+, forking the Queen!)

55...Kxa6

Line #2) 39.Qxb3 Rf8+, 40.Ke2 Re8+, 41.Kf3 Re7, 42.Qd5 Be5, 43.Qc5+ Kd7, 44.Qb5+ Kd6, 45.h4

(Note: Unlike in previous line, this advance robs the King of the vital g2 square!)

45...Rf7+, 46.Kg4

(Other moves are no better & take the King far from the Kingside pawns, which can't possibly help them in any way, shape or form!)

46...Rf4+, 47.Kh3 h5, 48.g3 Rg4,

(I tried my best to get to e1 or d1, followed by h1 with mate. But moving the rook to either e4 or d4 resulted in a series of checks from White that only let our King & their Queen dance all over the centre!)

49.Qe8 g6,

(Notice that even though the pawns are no longer on dark squares, where the bishop & rook, & perhaps King, can co-operate to protect them, they're still protected in this formation!)

50.Qf8+ Kd5, 51.Qf2 Rxa4, 52.Qd2+ Ke6, 53.Qc2 Rg4, 54.Qf2 Rxg3+, 55.Qxg3 Bxg3, 56.Kxg3 Kf5

(Their h-pawn falls next & we have TWO pawns that can & will be queened!)

I hope you find anything useful in either line. Take very good care & have a great day. Cheers mates! :)

Feb-23-06  RonB52734: <Cogano> If they do play 41.Kf3 rather than 41.Kd3, someone (<Robin01>, I think) has suggested checking them again with 41...Rf8+. Have you looked at that? For myself, I'm inclined to agree with you that even with 41.Kf3, we should go ahead and get our Rook on e7, but I haven't given it a great deal of thought. Personally, I have always felt they would play 41.Kd3.
Feb-23-06  Cogano: Hello again <RonB52734> & I sincerely hope this finds you well & that you've completely recovered from everything that ails/ailed you! :)

As for the game:

1) Kd3 abandons the Kingside pawns. I don't about you or the others, but I think that that's just plain fool-hardy. You have to give them more credit than considering they'd play something like this! They're not that novice players!

2)41...Rf8+ wastes time. Only the bishop or rook can protec the g7-pawn. But, remember the a-pawn as well. Only the rook can cover the entire 7th rank! Also, on the 7th rank, it's closer to BOTH bishop & King, to assist or be protected by them. You &/or may/will disagree with me. But that's what I think.

In any case, for those who disagree, I urge you to educate me by pointing out the flaws, inefficiencies etc. of my line. & I would really appreciate it if you'd point out an alternative line. Educating me on my flaws helps me, & helps us avoid using an inferior, losing line, but doesn't help us win the game! Thank you all ever most kindly for your anticipated & continued patience, tolerance, understanding, consideration & assistance. Take very good care & have a great day. Cheers mates! :)
