WannaBe: Learned something new, since '69 when Save became MLB stat, only 5 pitchers have recorded a save by pitching 5 innings or more. 4 was done in regular season, and 1 in post (MadBum)

WannaBe: <CIO> LOL. I remember those mems... <chancho> North by Norwest, totally agree, the audiences know that the plane scene was filmed earlier and played on a screen behind. It was still drama. Same thing with the Mt. Rushmore chase scene.

Jul-01-18  technical draw: In any event tomorrow will decide the tournament. Brazil--Mexico. Whoever wins tomorrow will be the champion.

Penguincw: Even though it would've lost, if I got 16:1 odds of Denmark beating Croatia for ChessBookie or <GE>'s contest, I would've taken it.

< In other words, 16 possible points will be up for grabs for each round, for a total of 80 points. >

I just realized that. Nice! It's smart. Good way to sum up the scoring process.

Diademas: <<technical draw:> <Diademas> Russia must, however, remove the viking horns from Denmark before eating. (or is that Norway?)>

Just because I'm a pedantic bore...

<Popular culture has come to associate horned helmets strongly with Viking warriors. However, there is no evidence that Viking helmets did in fact have horns.

The depiction of Vikings in horned helmets was an invention of 19th-century Romanticist Viking revival.> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horne...

Jul-01-18  thegoodanarchist: Uruguay looks very good. The winner of Uruguay v. France I think will be the best team remaining in the tournament.
Jul-01-18  optimal play: <LIONEL Messi will go down as one of the greatest footballers to ever play the game, but he’s once again failed on the biggest stage of all.>

https://www.news.com.au/sport/footb...

<What makes it even worse for Messi is the fact that in eight knockout games at the Cup, he has failed to score a goal. For a player so prolific at slicing through opposing defensive lines and putting the ball in the back of the net, it seems unfathomable that one of the game’s biggest stars hasn’t scored when it matters most.>

Truly great players rise to the occasion.

They step up and perform at their best when the pressure is on.

It's in the really big important games that truly great players show what they're capable of.

They dominate the big time games on which everything depends.

It's all very well and good to display extraordinary talent in the games that don't count but it's when the pressure is really on that the truly great players thrive and excel.

That's what stamps them as great.

In this regard Messi has repeatedly failed.

Jul-02-18  morfishine: <technical draw: In any event tomorrow will decide the tournament. Brazil--Mexico. Whoever wins tomorrow will be the champion> Possibly

It is easy to discount one team in situations like this, but to dismiss Uruguay, Croatia & France just like that? I don't think so. And even if Mexico wins, there's no guarantee they go all the way

Sweden found the correct formula to engage Mexico: An accurate, suffocating defense followed by swift counterattacks

But thats the way Brazil plays!

Fusilli: Mexico has a population of 127 million, they are crazy about soccer, they all kick the ball around from age 2, and they have a century of soccer tradition. How come they are not a powerhouse yet? Beats me.
Jul-02-18  morfishine: <Fusilli> I've only been watching World Cup Soccer intently since 1982 and it seems Mexico always has a very good team, but they always have one bad game that ends their effort. Maybe its a matter of luck
Jul-02-18  morfishine: Marcelo is out, did not start, but may play 45-60 minutes

Penguincw: < Jun-29-18 Penguincw: ... I imagine that Mexican commentator wants Mexico to win, and probably predicts Mexico to win too.

But if he's Stephen A Smith, that means Brazil will win.

Yes! Good thing I predicted that. >

Anyone know the rest of his bracket?

Jul-02-18  technical draw: Incredible ending! Belgium 3 Japan 2.

And I missed it because the phone rang at the same time. The best ending of a game and I missed it!

  WannaBe: And Belgium won!
Jul-02-18  morfishine: Belgium's first goal was an incredible fluke, a header from a cross drifted and fell into the far corner of the goal, no doubt the goalie was much flummoxed
Jul-02-18  technical draw: Oh, I forgot my favorite saying: Japan got the Olympic Chill...!!
Jul-03-18  morfishine: Japan had a good luck psychic Octupus that correctly predicted all its games. I guess not happy with the sea creature's prediction of the 1-0 loss to Poland, Japan killed and ate the Octupus prior to the Belgium match

No wonder they lost :(
