That includes speculation that he died from a heart attack caused by a chessgames user. |

<z> Well that has me in tears. Doubly so when I clicked on the "player of the day" link and got this message: <Please do not attempt to archive our site.
You are using a web client believed to be an archiving web-spider. Due to the irresponsibility of a few users, such software is discouraged here. If you have interest in acquiring our data in bulk, please contact chess@chessgames.com to discuss arrangements.Your IP: 207.241.228.214>
What a cruel irony, every way you could possibly think about it. I am choosing to think about it as a brand new day back in 2002, full of optimism and good cheer. That has been my main experience of this website. <Daniel> never lost his sense of humor or his even tempered approach to administering this fabulous project. |
|
| Aug-06-18 | | zanzibar: Yes <JFQ>. I think, in a sense, that it's tougher to lose/have friends on the net, because of the abstraction, and the "not forgetting". It's hard enough to lose friends in "real" life, but we can't even go to a wake, or the funeral/service. But the good outweighs the loss.
* * * * *
PS- I think the graphic of the dead spider from the "player of the day" is <Tab>. For those who deny death its due, such as he, it appears that there is hope after all - via reincarnation - that is, if you're willing to come back as a fly. (OK, a strained effort at a joke, admittedly) |
|
| Aug-06-18 | | JimNorCal: Sure, <jfq>, my apologies. Regarding 2020Tech, are they the hosting service for CG? Someone identified Lee at 2020Tech as <Sargon> so the connection with CG seems to be strong. |
|
| Aug-06-18 | | JimNorCal: Also, in this <Sargon> statement:
Sargon: Farewell, my friend <Sneaky>. We'll meet again someday in <glory>. Does anyone know anything about <glory>?

| Aug-07-18 | | jith1207: Guys, even Daniel Freeman wouldn't hold out any grudge this long just because someone bad mouthed him here. He has been webmaster for this site for two decades and he would have faced much worse scenarios than that. Certainly it wouldn't have been taken to his heart. So, please stop attacking each other because someone was negative on him earlier. Stop teaming yourselves up on any side, supporting or against. Even if the person who had bad mouthed earlier gives his respects now, it is not so hard to let everyone share their thoughts freely, as Daniel has administered this site so far. If you have true respect for Daniel, let his legacy continue here rather than changing the way he had set up for personal attacks and such hideous temptations. |
|
| Aug-07-18 | | jith1207: I think <glory> was meant to be dignified/highlighted, in a cg way there, rather than referring to a user. If you see 20/20 technologies' website and their products, chessgames is one of their best, if not the best, customer services as a showcase. I think as colleagues working in that company, many of them have interests in keeping the site running, though Daniel would have kept it close to him as one of the founders and probably more chess-savvy guy in their group. I think 20/20 tech as hosting and web design company would have some say and idea in preserving this site further and keeping it running legally and seamlessly, in which case I assume financial returns would be more considered at some point doing so. Of course, legal makeup needs to be sorted out first but I hope the company has better idea and direction on how best to handle these situations. I believe <Sargon> or <Kev> could clarify on this, when appropriate. Guess we just need to wait to hear from them or someone from new admin group. In the mean time, I appreciate the efforts of users to archive the previous little, one at a time. |

| Aug-07-18 | | jith1207: <jfc> just got curious, on the timeline in the upper left corner of that archive home page. It says 2056 captures, from 26 Jan 2002 to 26 Jul 20018. What did these dates indicate? That someone has tried to archive since that earliest date until the latest one? I was just curious about the final version date being so close to 24th. It is just trivial though. |

<JimNorCal> To meet "in glory" is a common Christian phrase meaning to meet "in Heaven." I don't know if that's how it was used in this case. I do know that <Daniel> was a Christian. He once told me that editing the World Championship pages was "doing God's work." I certainly wasn't going to quibble with him on that one. I don't regret doing any of the work I did at cg.com. This is one of the reasons I have been using the Wayback Machine like mad to archive pages, "just in case." |

| Aug-07-18 | | JimNorCal: <jfq>, <ocf>, or anyone really ... is there any evidence of someone guiding the site? There was one statement from <Sargon>, but no followup that I know of. The Biel crosstab is improved but the Live Game is still in place. As a former programmer that's a danger sign, because breaking things tends to be easy whereas correct function can be a challenge. Thus, I certainly don't get concerned that no one has added coverage of the British Championship. But if the Live Game is not disabled ... is it hard to do, or is no one trying? |

| Aug-07-18 | | Big Pawn: When the monthly server bill isn’t paid, the site will go down. It’s probably around $500 a month, assuming it’s on a fairly beefed up, fast, dedicated server. Money from subscription payments is used to pay for the server, but which bank account are those payments sent? Getting security clearance to access those accounts could be difficult. Better enjoy the site while it lasts. |
|
| Aug-07-18 | | JimNorCal: Do the server fees go to 2020Tech? If so, I imagine arrangements will be made. |

 | | Diademas: I think maybe <Sargon> should make some kind of announcement as to the future of CG. We are all grief stricken by Daniel's death, but this is a commercial enterprise. <<<sargon>:ChessGames.com> was a <labor of love> for Dan, and will stand as one of his greatest legacies, and I will be <attempting> to fill Dan's <large> shoes by assuming administrations of the site and database for the time being.> Wise words. But the uncertainty needs some kind of resolution.
Just as a start; on some pages moderation is desperately needed... |
|
| Aug-07-18 | | JimNorCal: <Sargon> SHOULD make an announcement.
Sure. What does it mean that he has not? |
|
| Aug-07-18 | | JimNorCal: There is good information here. I hope it is OK to note it. There are many people of good will waiting to hear more, and potentially available to participate in preservation of the site. Annie K. chessforum
Presumably Sargon is doing some tech work but site ownership is not clear. Only the owner will be able to give actual leadership. DF's family, for example, may have little interest in chess. And no knowledge of the value of the database built here (value to history not in dollars). |
