Aug-12-18  Caissanist: Has anyone been permanently banned from this site, ever? I haven't kept up on all the mud wrestling in recent years but, so far as I know, no. Various users have had their wrists slapped in other ways, which I suppose qualifies as "something being done."

Many thanks to Annie for all you are doing.

  Annie K.: <N0B0DY> Yeah, sorry. :)
Aug-12-18  thegoodanarchist: < Annie K.:

Oh, and nobody is going to get banned <just> because another poster asks for it. That's just hysteria.>

Well, of course!

However, that isn't what I said, and it has nothing to do with my point.

Why twist my words around? I am trying to have a civil conversation.

If you don't want to, that's fine. But please don't misrepresent what I say.

Aug-12-18  thegoodanarchist: < Caissanist: Has anyone been permanently banned from this site, ever? I haven't kept up on all the mud wrestling in recent years but, so far as I know, no.>

I think you're right.

But that was with Daniel at the helm.

With Daniel's passing, I don't know what to expect.

But I have seen 3 users make attempts, or discuss making attempts, to get other users banned.

So that's why I keep speaking up about it. Such attempts should be denounced for what they are.

Aug-12-18  thegoodanarchist: <Caissanist> One more thing. AFAIK, user <Sargon> is taking the lead in running this site now.

His first comment since confirming Daniel's passing was rather threatening, and a little light with specifics.

So that is another reason why I am making sure to stand up for what is right.

It's easy to support someone's right to comment, when you agree with them! It is when their comments are found objectionable that the true test confronts us. Will we stand up then?

Or will we sit idly by, while power-hungry, intolerant people try to silence people they don't agree with?

Aug-12-18  zanzibar: <<Caissanist> Has anyone been permanently banned from this site, ever? >

There has been an example or two of voluntary exile, if memory permits me.

I wonder who keeps track of such things.

<Many thanks to Annie for all you are doing>

Agree! Great job! =)

<thegoodanarchist> I understand your concerns, but for now you must trust her when she says that <nobody is going to get banned> until the new management takes over. Please save your energy. Thank you.

<Daniel> said it is physically impossible to ban someone permanently from a website. He said "Can you ban someone from Google" as an example. I think he posted that right on the cg.com help page, if I remember correctly.

He said even the notorious "triple ban" had workarounds that weren't that hard to figure out.

But most importantly, he never wanted to ban anyone permanently to begin with.

Even if he had been right about it being impossible to fully ban someone from cg.com, I doubt he would ever have done it.

Example- A decade ago I read on some cg.com page that "Hayden" had been a member who was "banned" for stalking AJ.

But "Hayden" is alive and well and has been for years. He just has a new handle. But I bet you his old handle of "Hayden" is still working, if he ever cared to sign in with it again.

It was against every bone in <Daniel's> body not to give a person "just one more chance." It was one of the most beautiful things about him.

What <z> just posted also fits with my memory of certain events.

"Klangenfarben" got "permanently banned," but in fact this was a voluntary exile.

He could have come back. He could still come back. He's over at chess.com now and has been for years.

I asked him point blank why he didn't come back and he said he didn't want to.

AJ also exiled himself of his own volition. He is gone because he didn't want to be here anymore.

Aug-12-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: Klangenfarben should have been permanently banned and possibly imprisoned for calling himself "Klangenfarben!".

Lol. Couldn't resist :)

To you, and <Annie K>, and anyone else who misunderstands:

I am not saying that I think <DWOB> or <zanzy> or <CHC> will be able to get someone banned!

That is NOT the point!

The point is to stand up to those members who are power-grabbing, who are intolerant and want to censor or ban other users for personal reasons.

It isn't that I think this is probable, it's that this community needs to speak out against the very attempts at such things!

This community is still grieving, so please cut everyone some slack. Thank you.

He comes back. Frequently.

He just doesn't post:

You think I'm not?

<so please cut everyone some slack. Thank you.>

My recollection is, you were one of the first people to <stop> cutting slack. I didn't preach to you about it.

Perhaps you should have led with that...

I ask the same question to Sargon. I don't want to send any emails until I know who I'm emailing.

<twinlark:

Good luck everyone.

It's been fun.>

C'mon <Twinners>. It'll all be back to normal soon, you've just put people on ignore. I know how you must feel, ignore only works when someone doesn't copy and paste their posts but those people only respond because they care. Don't let certain trolls get to you.

You're answering a question <tga> didn't ask. I don't think I have to trust anyone, FWIW.

Aug-12-18  rogge: <tpstar: This community is still grieving, so please cut everyone some slack. Thank you.>

Look who's preaching.

<Jul-30-18
Premium Chessgames Member tpstar: So Daniel Freeman spends his life building a wonderful chess site for the world to enjoy, then one of his final memories here is watching career criminal <Mark Finan> drive Nigel Short away. It doesn't get any worse than this. I said you were a lost cause and I was right.>

Aug-12-18  technical draw: I am basically an outsider looking in and my opinions are not very important since I had decided to leave this site in November before the passing of Daniel. I have been here for 15 years and it's time to move on. I have travel plans and other interests. Plus I have almost forgotten how to play chess.

The discussions on this and other pages leads me to ask (with all due respect) "Who died and left you in charge?'

I do believe that Annie K is doing a good job trying to gather all the loose threads and make an attempt to normalize this site. However we must be aware of too many cooks spoiling the broth.

I wish <Annie K> and <Sargon> and <JFQ> and all others that are trying to unite this great community and restore it to a reasonable semblance of what it was when Daniel was here the best of luck and success.

I now bid adieu to all my great friends (and some not so great friends) and I hope the best to all, Respectfully, TD.....

Aug-12-18  morfishine: <thegoodanarchist> Very nice series of posts

<technical draw> I for one wish you the best going forward. Hopefully, your leaving is not so permanent
