chessgames.com: <hms123> I just figured out why you're not getting the newsletters. Your email address is on the account User: ChessBookForum and it specifically has the "don't send me newsletters" option checked. This affects the email address, ergo all other accounts with the same email address.

Perhaps you thought that you'd get two newsletters if you didn't do that--no, the software is smart enough to only send one copy to each email address it knows about.

Sep-27-09  hms123: <Chessgames> ok--thanks--I will go in and fix it.

OhioChessFan: That seems like a pretty simple bust of Troitzky.

chessgames.com: It is indeed a bust of Troitzky. We just found that modern editions of the famous "1234 Endgame Studies" list it in the errata, (this is study #1123) and Lommer and Sutherland suggest a correction: add a White pawn to a4. Then the spirit of the solution is preserved but the perpetual check vanishes.

Our sincere apologies for selecting one of Troitzky's few flawed studies for use in our Fall newsletter.

Sep-28-09  whatthefat: <chessgames.com>

In the newsletter, you give examples of the new head-to-head search features, but I don't see them on the main page. For example, I just searched Kramnik vs. Kasparov and got this:

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

Surely the main search function should be integrated with the ez-search?

chessgames.com: <Surely the main search function should be integrated with the ez-search?> A very good point, that routine should be shared between both kinds of searches. We intended to improve EZ Search but not make Advanced Search obsolete!
Sep-29-09  hedgeh0g: I loved that ad where every word was capitalised, "Come Play, My Lord", and some woman who looked like Celine Dion was suggestively posing with just a bra.

I have no idea what this was for, but is there any chance of getting it back? :P

Tabanus: <chessgames.com> Two more GM's that should be merged:

1) Samvel Ter-Sahakyan (20 games) and Samvel Ter Sahakyan (44 games), 2) Orestes Rodriguez (59 games) and Orestes Rodriguez Vargas (40 games).

chessgames.com: <I loved that ad where every word was capitalised, "Come Play, My Lord", and some woman who looked like Celine Dion was suggestively posing with just a bra. I have no idea what this was for> It was for a multi-player web game (an "MMORPG") called "Civony" and later called "Evony". <but is there any chance of getting it back?> We removed it based on some complaints, sorry.

However if you want to ogle the advertisements some more, we found this interesting article titled "How NOT to Advertise on the Internet" that shows all of the Evony ads:

Sep-29-09  gawain: <Chessgames> I have discovered a possible Daily Puzzle in a previously unkibitzed game. Since I don't know any other way to submit it for your consideration, I'm trying this.

P Cramling vs H Hunt, 2006

The one and only comment so far is my suggestion

Sep-30-09  Benzol: <chessgames> I have the sneaky suspicion that Darryl Johanson is actually Darryl K Johansen

BTW any chance of you uploading my last lot of game submissions?

chessgames.com: <gawain> Thanks, it's a nice puzzle although the position is even without the combination.

<Benzol> Thanks, and yes we'll get to your games very soon.

Sep-30-09  gawain: I've corrected an error in my Hunt kibitzing that <Dr Nyet> caught. I wrote 46...d3 where it ought to have been 46...dxe3+.

  WannaBe: Minor complaint/whine...

On the live game page, or during coverage, is it possible to <NOT> update the page, until a move is made?

Usually the page is up hours before the first move is made, and I am trying to read the posts, all of a sudden, <BAM> the page updates! And I am back at the top of the page.

And same thing during the broadcast of the game, there can be minutes, without a move being made, so I'm reading the posts/analysis, and <BAM> the page updates...

Is this something that can be done in preference section? Hard to implement? Nice to have, but it is on the back burner?

chessgames.com: <WannaBe> We know what you mean, and we sympathize, yet we still doubt we're going to change it anytime soon.

You see, there are indeed techniques to avoid the problems you describe, but everything comes at a price. We don't want a remedy that causes more problems than the malady.

One of the strong points of our Live Broadcast Page is that the technology is so simple it is virtually impossible to fail. Whether you've got a Mac, a PC, a Unix machine, or even an iPhone, that page works great. It's not the most efficient way of doing it, nor is it the prettiest method, but in terms of compatibility and reliability it can't be beat. So with that in mind, this is the compromise we've decided is best.

Having said all that, there is a back-shelf project to offer a "frames mode" that would split all game pages (including the live page) into two sections, the diagram and the kibitzing. That way you could scroll through the kibitzing while leaving the diagram stationary.

We would never foist such an feature upon users without their asking for it, but conceivably it could be a preference option. So perhaps one day the frames option will be the answer to your problem--although we warn you now, "web frames" inevitably comes with its own set of quirks.

Oct-01-09  Oliphaunt: <cg> I don't like the fact that, under the New Games heading, it says "Carlsen (with help from trainer Garry Kasparov) is now in the lead 2.5/3."

Why mention that bit about Kasparov, at all?! As if he was playing half of the moves... It's not like no one has ever before had the help of a great coach to win their games.

moronovich: <Oliphant> but when we think about it,it is not an evrydaything that the best chessplayer during all times and the probably most talented player on the curcuit now , are ganging , is it ?

But off course it is Magnus who will perform OTB.

Oct-01-09  Oliphaunt: True, but I think that's something that the reader should find out all by himself.

1. Bolt (because he has a special coach and a body most suited for his profession)

2. Gay

3. Powell

Doesn't look too good does it?

chessgames.com: <Oliphaunt: Why mention that bit about Kasparov, at all?> To be perfectly blunt that comes under the category of "marketing hype", although I don't see why it should bother you. Anyhow, that line gets replaced daily as the standings change. If you look now you'll see some new hype.
Oct-01-09  Oliphaunt: It's just that I'm a bit of a perfectionist.

Hilarious article, thanks!

Oct-01-09  hms123: <whatthefat> Your link didn't work for me, but this one does. Great article--if a little depressing.

http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/ar...

Oct-01-09  dakgootje: a 'little' depressing only? :P

For what it is worth, the link-problem was due to whatthefat having copied an earlier post by cg.com. In practise all links, unless really short, get decreased as you can see for they end with ... If quoted you thus quote only the shortend link which is not the full link and thus doesn't work.

Oct-01-09  hms123: <dakgootje>

<a 'little' depressing only? :P>

I am a pretty upbeat guy.
