Nov-06-09  Open Defence: <chessgames.com> I see you have classifications of Classical, Rapid and Blitz for the games, but not Corresspondence

would you consider adding this classification ? it would be invaluable for a player like me :)

also regarding the discussion on relays, surprising how transmitting a few KB of data which all a PGN file is turns out to to be this complex, maybe there is a scope for event sites like chessok, and chessbomb, chessbase to host the traffic since they would have the infrastructure to handle a huge number of hits and the official web sites should not carry any live feed accessible to the general public ?

Nov-07-09  znnnk: Games from the 3rd Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam can now be downloaded:

http://www.asia-chess.com/main/

Nov-07-09  Ulhumbrus: <chessgames.com> You seem not to have included the two games which Nimzowitsch won against Voellmy at Bern 1931 in this database. You can find the games at the chess games database with the following website: http://www.chesslive.de/

chessgames.com: <Ulhumbrus> The only game I found at chesslive.de was this draw:

[Event "Bern exh"]
[Site "Bern"]
[Date "1931.??.??"]
[Round "5"]
[White "Voellmy,Erwin"]
[Black "Nimzowitsch,Aaron"]
[Result "1/2"]
[Eco "D30"]
1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.c4 e6 4.Bg5 Nbd7 5.e3 h6 6.Bxf6 Bb4+ 7.Nc3 Bxc3+ 8.bxc3 Nxf6 9.Bd3 0-0 10.0-0 c5 11.Qc2 Qc7 12.Ne5 b6 13.Rac1 dxc4 14.Bxc4 Bb7 15.Qe2 Rac8 16.Rfd1 cxd4 17.exd4 Nd5 18.Bxd5 exd5 19.Qh5 Rce8 20.Rd3 f6 21.Ng6 Rf7 22.Rg3 Qd6 23.h3 Re4 24.Rd1 Bc8 25.Rdd3 Re1+ 26.Kh2 Ba6 27.Rde3 Rxe3 28.fxe3 Bc4 29.a3 Bd3 30.Nf4 Be4 31.Qxh6 Qxa3 32.Qh5 Qxc3 33.Rxg7+ Kxg7 34.Ne6+ Kg8 35.Qg4+ 1/2

It has a small technical problem (1/2 doesn't work for a lot of software--it is supposed to read "1/2-1/2") but we changed it and inserted it. We assume that "Round 5" really means "Board 5". Thanks for pointing that out, you can discuss it here:

E Voellmy vs Nimzowitsch, 1931

However we don't know anything any other Voellmy-Nimzowitsch encounters. Please show us or use the PGN Upload Utility.

Incidentally, does anybody know anything else about this "Bern Exhibition" that Nimzowitch apparently conducted in 1931?

chessgames.com: <Open Defense> No you're wrong, the valid game types are:

CLASSICAL
BLITZ
RAPID
QUICK
BLINDFOLD
ANALYSIS
EXHIBITION
UNORTHODOX
CORRESPONDENCE
OTHER

However, we have not set to the task yet of declaring which games are "CORRESPONDENCE" by the above designation yet. We're still working on the algorithm to do that. It's no so much a technical problem but a matter of research, we have to be savvy enough to know what the ICCF and WCCF are, and what a game from "Gameknot.com" means, etc.

Just wait for it -- we'll soon have the ability to search for correspondence games.

Nov-07-09  technical draw: <Here's a game against Gygli.>

Wow! Jennifer Lopez!

Nov-07-09  Ulhumbrus: <chessgames.com> If you go to the http://www.chesslive.de/ website, type "Nimzowitsch" in the White pieces box and "Voellmy" in the Black pieces box, and press the search button, the website will come up with two games which Nimzowitsch won against Voellmy with the White pieces. Raymond Keene has annotated briefly one of them in the Bell edition of his book "Aron Nimzowitsch: a re-appraisal" with descriptive notation, but it doesn't appear in a later edition of his book with algebraic notation.

At least they told you... I asked them about the classifications ages ago and they wouldn't say a word.

Nov-08-09  notyetagm: How about a forum for the <Spanish Club Chess Championship 2009>?

Thanks

Nov-09-09  Eyal: <CG> According to what I've seen on other sites, the score of Gelfand vs Carlsen, 2009 from the ongoing Tal Memorial is a bit corrupt - the moves <26.Qxd4 Qxa2 27.Ra1> are missing at the end.
Nov-09-09  laskersteinitz: I really think "kibitzing" on this site should be better organized. One suggestion would be to give users the ability to create sub-topics within a player's page, or within a page dedicated to a particular tournament. Users could then look at a theme/topic that interests them and address that particular theme. The way things are right now, one can only really look at the recent posts, and loses the opportunity to address an older topic that is buried in the kibitzing from a few pages past.

I also think there is something wrong with the page numbers. For example, I will sometimes see a post on say, page 308, then click on "Later Kibitzing" and see the same post in the middle of page 309.

Nov-09-09  weisyschwarz: I just sent a game to you, and the name of the player who lost to F.Olafsson is Andreas Duckstein. I believe he is/was(?) from Austria.
Nov-09-09  Eyal: <laskersteinitz> I'm sure <chessgames.com> can answer you very well on their own... but until they do, I happen to remember a very instructive post they once made here about their "anti-threading" policy (chessgames.com chessforum), which would seem to directly address your first question/suggestion.
Nov-09-09  laskersteinitz: <Eyal> Wow! How did you dig <that> up? Anyways, thanks!

chessgames.com: Yes, the anti-threading dissertation is probably the best answer there. About this: <I also think there is something wrong with the page numbers. For example, I will sometimes see a post on say, page 308, then click on "Later Kibitzing" and see the same post in the middle of page 309.>

This too has been discussed, but the general idea is this: we wanted to program it so that when a user comes to the default page (the final page) of a long discussion thread, you should see 25 messages. (This is in contrast to other forums where a "new page" can be created that only has one post on it.) Of course since the number of messages is rarely divisible by exactly 25, this creates some weird effects on short thread when you move back and forth between two pages. Other unexpected effects happen when people are actively posting to the thread you are reading.

In short, it may seem buggy on some fringe cases, but there is logic behind it. The alternative creates a new kind of problem, the "empty page effect", that we found a way to avoid.

Tabanus: <cg> The cat. XIV event Magistral Ciutat de Barcelona finished today, with 20-year-old IM Daniel Alsina Leal as winner ahead of nine GM's. Pgn's (45 games) are here:

http://www.chess-results.com/Partie...

I noticed that IM Leal played in Politiken Cup 2008, but 0 games in the database. I think this tournament is missing (e. g., 0 games also by Eljanov). Pgn's are downloadable here:

http://www.ksu.dk/politiken_cup/200..., click on "Games" and select ELO (e. g. above 2200) (must be repeated 10 times to get all rounds).

Games from Chigorin Memorial 2009 rounds 1-3 and 9 are available but still missing.

chessgames.com: Hi <Tabanus> and thanks for the info. We periodically resynchronize with the more prominent games that TWIC archives so many of those events should get collected within the next few weeks. Others may deserve front page attention.

<Games from Chigorin Memorial 2009 rounds 1-3 and 9 are available but still missing.> Oh thanks, we were wondering about that.

Nov-11-09  hms123: <chessgames.com> These two players G Pohla and G Pokhla might be the same person. In the <Sorcerer's Apprentice> Bronstein has a game with Pohla at Talinn in 1977. Pohla and Pohkla both seem to have played at Tallinn in 1977--probably not a coincidence.
Nov-11-09  laskersteinitz: Regarding my advocacy for threading on this website, please take a look at the Tal Memorial (2009) page. There is a heated debate going on there, with users going back and forth with very long posts. I made a simple query regarding the time control for the blitz tournament, which got completely lost in the turbulent oceans of said users' debate...

SwitchingQuylthulg: <G Pohla and G Pokhla might be the same person> The former is certainly the correct spelling of his surname. The guy only plays in Estonia, ergo he's an Estonian, and "Pohla" is a reasonably common surname in Estonia while I don't think "kh" even exists in the language. (It does, however, pop up when Estonian is transliterated into Cyrillic and then back again, explaining the error.)

I'm inclined to think Harry Pohla might in fact be the correct spelling of his full name, though. H/G is another thing that can get messed up in repeated transliterations, and the http://chesslive.de database actually attributes the G Pohla/Pokhla games to Harry Pohla. But since chesslive.de is hardly God, and Pohla <is> a reasonably common surname in Estonia, I can't guarantee this.
