| Nov-12-09 | | hms123: <Switch> Thanks--Bronstein, in fact, gives the name as <Harry Pohla>. The game is the Sorcerer's Apprentice is the 40th in the section of <40 Combinations> at the front of the book. |

 | | chessgames.com: We are proud to announce that the Chessgames Challenge: Battle of the Brains 3, 2009 is now open for registration. The game will begin on Thursday, November 26th (Thanksgiving Day for Americans). |
|
| Nov-12-09 | | Open Defence: Hi chessgames.com this time when I registered in BOB III I used my Open Defence Account instead of the Red October account, so it put me in Team Black when I played Black in BOB II (as Red October), could you switch me to the other team ? |
|
| Nov-13-09 | | Open Defence: else remove <Open Defence> from the game and I will sign up as <Red October> |

| Nov-13-09 | | firebyrd: Suggestion for a useful user preference: "Collapse long messages" Eg. if a message is more than 10 lines long you could just show the start and end with a clickable <more> that would expand the rest of the message, eg. you would have something like (random example taken from Carlsen page): <
frogbert: rogge, here's the current "candidate numbers" (with live rating in parenthesis): 01 Carlsen (2797,3) 2784,65
02 Kramnik (2786,5) 2772,75
<<more...>> >
It would make the discussion pages easier to traverse, stop long posts from gathering too much interest, and be an incentive to write shorter (eg. If you write less than 10 lines, your entire post will show, else only 5 lines will show as default for users enabling "Collapse"). |

| Nov-13-09 | | hms123: <chessgames.com> <firebyrd's> suggestion would also be very useful to Premium members who are using the <search kibitzing> feature. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Open Defence: Hi chessgames.com this time when I registered in BOB III I used my Open Defence Account instead of the Red October account, so it put me in Team Black when I played Black in BOB II (as Red October), could you switch me to the other team ?> Normally we can't switch accounts once they are assigned. The notion is that once you read the privileged discussion area you should not be allowed to go over to the other side where one might relay what was being said on the other side. However in this case I see that Red October is ALREADY assigned to Team White and Open Defense is assigned to Team Black. Of course I know you didn't do that on purpose -- but understand, to any outside observer it would look like an attempt to cheat. If the game was well underway opponents on the other team would surely complain that you should not be allowed to switch. However the game has only been online for 12 hours and won't start for weeks. Therefore the remedy is simple: all that is required here is that we remove the account Open Defense from game, since you obviously can't have more than one account playing in the same game, whether on the same team or opposing teams. We just did that. So in short, play Chessgames Challenge: Battle of the Brains 3, 2009 using Red October, and everything should be fine. If you strongly prefer to play with your Open Defence account I can switch that out for you, but if it doesn't make much of a difference to you, I would suggest keeping things simple and continue using Red October for the team games. |

 | | chessgames.com: <SwitchingQuylthulg> <G Pohla and G Pokhla might be the same person> <I'm inclined to think Harry Pohla might in fact be the correct spelling of his full name, though> And so did Bronstein, so that's good enough for us. (Link: Harry Pohla) The poor fellow only has one win in our database. Perhaps we can find some other wins by Mr. Pohla to better represent his talent. |
|
Nov-13-09
 | | chessgames.com: We just found more games by Harry, now his record is +20 -28 =24 (44.4%) -- much more representative of this somewhat obscure but strong player. |
|
| Nov-13-09 | | Red October: thanks <chessgames.com> yes, thats what I wanted, Red October is for team games, in my enthusiasm to sign up for <BOB III> I forgot to switch ids, thanks for understanding |

 | | Tabanus: <cg> Moscow Open (2008) is here but not Moscow Open 2009. The pgn links on the official site do not work, but 804 games are now here (with the new duplicate player records such an import would probably create!): http://ratings.fide.com/view_pgn.ph... |

| Nov-14-09 | | notyetagm: <CG.COM> Two requests 1) Can you add the remaining Informant symbols (Δ,∞, ) that are not currently rendered? 2) Please add a forum to cover the <2009 World Youth Chess Championship>. http://wycc2009.tsf.org.tr/
Thanks |

| Nov-15-09 | | frogbert: <chessgames.com>
the introduction to the world chess blitz championship event on the front page is slightly wrong. it's not <12 invitees> in addition to the players of tal memorial. 6 of the 12 additional players actually <qualified> for the world championship in blitz, and the 7th is the reigning blitz champion. i think it's important to communicate that the blitz wc isn't purely an invitational event - giving the impression that it is, only fuels partly unfair rants that players have been left out, when there actually was an <open qualifier>, at least in principle. (even if its time and location is/was a bit prohibiting to some - it took place during the aeroflot chess festival) |

 | | chessgames.com: <frogbert> You're right, we were actually aware of that inaccuracy but wanted to convey the information as succinctly as possible. We just changed it to read "12 more" since the details are impossible to explain in the limited homepage space. <1) Can you add the remaining Informant symbols that are not currently rendered?> We can but there are a very large number of them. Which ones particularly did you have in mind as handy to use? By the way you skipped one, we also have ▢ (the forced-move symbol) by typing "forced" inside the { and }. |

| Nov-18-09 | | Red October: <chessgames.com> request a clarification, can past engine vs engine games be referred to in BOB III ? if so what about past engine games that have been played on a user's computer or at playchess.com (or a similar site) ? the reason I am asking is that in some openings the current theory has also been set by engine games and even engine games have been part of DBs such as chessgames.com |
|
| Nov-18-09 | | hms123: <Red October> I think that the basic principle is that you can use anything that is publicly available, but that you shouldn't set the position up on your computer and let it analyze. Having said that, it does seem that those, like you, who have opening repertoires that were developed in part through your own previous engine analysis ought to be able to use them. But even in that case, much of that repertoire might be already be available publicly on your player page or on gameknot etc. I am curious as to the response from the admins. |

| Nov-18-09 | | Red October: actually its my HIARCS Team and Rybka Team work that I am worried about :) |
|
| Nov-18-09 | | hms123: <Red October> You seem pretty trustworthy--probably because you remind me of someone. I can't think of whom at the moment, but I will deffinitely come up with it later. |
