| Nov-24-09 | | Eyal: <CG> Regarding the tiebreaks day of the World Cup's 1st round, I've noticed that the 3rd rapid game (i.e., 5th game overall) of Dominguez - Smerdon is missing; also, the classical game Gustafsson vs Inarkiev from the 1st day is still missing, even though it appears now in the official site's pgns. Speaking of the Opening Explorer - I don't know if this has been asked before, but should there be a problem in allowing a search by moves or
FEN within the repertoire explorer of a single player? When I try to do that it throws me to the general opening explorer. |

 | | chessgames.com: <RonB52734> Thanks, that one definitely flew under our radar. We think if you try it again it should work. <I don't know if this has been asked before, but should there be a problem in allowing a search by moves or FEN within the repertoire explorer of a single player? When I try to do that it throws me to the general opening explorer.> That would be a good feature, to be able to find a FEN for a certain player, but it's not designed to work that way. We'll put that on our "wish list"--it's a fine idea, we just didn't think of it when we designed the Repertoire Explorer. |

D Smerdon vs L Dominguez, 2009
J Gustafsson vs E Inarkiev, 2009
Thanks for figuring out which ones were missing. There are probably a few more; let us know if you pinpoint one that's absent. |

| Nov-25-09 | | laskersteinitz: In the drop-down list of top players on the home page, I believe you have some of the Asian players' names backwards. I'm 99% positive that Wang Yue's last name is actually Wang, even though it comes first. Same for Bu Xiang. I think that's how they do it in some Asian countries: last name comes first. |
|
Nov-25-09
 | | chessgames.com: <laskersteinitz> We're aware of that muddle. It's even more complex than you describe, because some players have a preference that contradicts how names are normally ordered in their home country. The most obvious example is World Champion Anand, who technically should be "World Champion Viswanathan" (Anand is his given name, not his family name), but because he prefers to use Anand we just abandon convention in his case. A few other notable players fit into that category. When it comes to players like Wang Yue, you are incontrovertibly correct: he should be listed under the W's and not the Y's. But the software doesn't know that he's Asian, so it treats the name just like it was "Bob Jones". This is an issue that we didn't consider when the software was first created. The solution will be implemented in the future: we will create a kind of a flag in the player records that means "family name first", and some features like the Player Directory will take heed of that flag. Thanks in any case for bringing this to light. Maybe somebody has some ingenious idea better than our intended solution. |

 | | chessgames.com: Completely New Topic:
<TIPS FOR POWER USERS> In our upcoming Holiday Newsletter (scheduled to go out in early December) we want to have a special section called "Tips for Power Users". We want to enumerate a number of small things that you can do to enhance your Chessgames experience, especially things that new users often don't know about. Here are a few examples we came up:
<1> Have you ever looked for a GM on our pulldown lists only to discover he or she is not there? Go to your Chessgames Preferences Page and click on "Longer list of players on homepage". This will add over a hundred new names to your pulldown list, and chances are the omitted GM will suddenly appear. <2> When searching for games between famous players, don't waste time with the advanced search, just use the EZ Search at the top of the homepage. For example, if you want to see all of the Fischer-Benko encounters just search "Fischer-Benko" and there you have it, with a minimum of keystrokes. <3> Start game collections (link = Chessgames Help) so you can categorize certain games that are important to you. For example, if you play the King's Gambit you can start your own "King's Gambit Traps" collection. Then every time you find a game that fits those criteria, scroll down and add it to the right collection. Also visit our Game Collection Search and see if other people have made collections similar to yours; that is an easy way to find new games to add. <4> Spruce up your kibitzing with symbols like and ♗. If you want to get somebody's attention, put their screen-name in <angle brackets>. The full list of kibitzing tricks can be found on our Kibitzing Tricks page. <5> The link under each game called "Similar Games" is a very powerful feature, and 100% free. It can be used as a way to explore openings, even if you're not a premium member. There's no specific number of tips we're shooting for, but a "top 10 tips" list might be nice. If anybody has more ideas for this list, we're interested in hearing about them right here. Who knows, we might even learn something new ourselves! |
|
| Nov-25-09 | | crawfb5: One problem with using symbols is they are lost in a cut and paste. <<4> Spruce up your kibitzing with symbols like and ♗.> after a cut and paste:

The PGN Upload Utility is an easy-to-use way for you to personally correct this glaring oversight. (Don't get desperate or aggressive if the game's still missing four months later - the admins will get around to adding it eventually.) |
|
| Nov-26-09 | | Red October: <The most obvious example is World Champion Anand, who technically should be "World Champion Viswanathan" (Anand is his given name, not his family name)> no, Vishwanathan would be his father's name and so to call him World Champion Vishwanathan would be a mistake, it would be like calling me Mark Hosea... Anand is correct... |
|
| Nov-26-09 | | Red October: cant' resist..
Well ain't that cute.. BUT IT'S WRONG!! |
|
| Nov-26-09 | | Eyal: Everything you always wanted to know about Anand's name but were afraid to ask: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...
<CG: Thanks for figuring out which ones were missing. There are probably a few more; let us know if you pinpoint one that's absent.> I believe the games of the first five days are all in order now... in the tiebreak games of today, the 4th and last rapid game (2.6) of the Tomashevsky vs Khalifman match is missing. |

 | | chessgames.com: Red October of course is right. Mea culpa. I remember reading that ChessBase article--it's very good. Sadly, all I could recall is that Anand was a given name (there might be a million Anands in the world!), but I forgot that Indians don't even use what Westerners call "family names" (surnames). However, I'm still confused, at least in some specific cases. What of Pentala Harikrishna? Was his father named Pentala, or was it Harikrishna? And why is it that we see "Harikrishna Pentala" regularly while we almost never see "Anand Viswanathan"? Humpy Koneru / Koneru Humpy is still another prominent example. Anyhow, the subject from a programmer/DBA viewpoint is still the same: what is required is the database to recognize the difference between a name like "Bob Smith" and one like "Wang Yue", simply for the purposes of proper presentation and alphabetizing. A simple one bit flag (ON/OFF) should do the trick, I think. By the way, Happy Thanksgiving to everybody!

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <Eyal: <CG: Thanks for figuring out which ones were missing. There are probably a few more; let us know if you pinpoint one that's absent.> I believe the games of the first five days are all in order now...> However, the results of L Dominguez vs F Caruana, 2009 and I Cheparinov vs Bologan, 2009 seem problematic. Neither final position looks drawn, and what I assume is the official PGN (http://cup2009.fide.com/java/pgn/10...) indeed gives the outcomes as 0-1 and 1-0 respectively. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: Oh, and that reminds me...
<7> The game you're looking at says White won, yet some circumstantial evidence, such as him being checkmated in the final position, indicates the opposite might be the case. Feeling confused? More probably than not, the Database is indeed in error. There exists an Error Correction Form, but actually using it in such a case will most probably be just a waste of time, as someone else will have done so already - the admins simply haven't got around to correcting matters yet. Always remember they're busy people, and have a great big queue of thousands of correction forms on their doorstep! However, if you feel you can report the error in an original and amusing way, please do so regardless. |

In the case of Cheparinov vs Bologan it would mean that the overall score of the match was 3.5-2.5 rather than 4-2, as the official site says (http://cup2009.fide.com/results.php...), at least at the moment I'm posting this. In the case of Dominguez vs. Caruana it probably means that this was Caruana's only win, and that the 4th game of the rapid match - L Dominguez vs F Caruana, 2009 - where the final position is a dead draw, was actually drawn. |

 | | Tabanus: <cg> I can't resist mentioning this young (born 1992) and promising GM. The two should be merged: Aleksandr Shimanov
and Aleksan Shimanov Shimanov ended 2nd in the "World's Youth Stars" 2009. Winner was Daniil Dubov, born 1996! The pgn's appear to be OK and are here: http://www.somovs-memorial.ru/game/... |

 | | OhioChessFan: <8> If you want to read posts addressed to you, use the search function in the recent kibitzing link, and type in your user name (and common nicknames/abberviations) -User:(your user name) ie, "OhioChessFan -User:OhioChessFan"
Or "OCF -User:OhioChessFan"
That will bring up posts where your user name is mentioned, but will not bring up posts you wrote. |

| Nov-26-09 | | frogbert: <chessgames.com>
the highest ratings achieved on the db stats page has got another interesting top entry now: <1. SCORPION83 (3418)> i think you'll find out that this refers to an icc rating - unless you've suddenly decided to give us a glimpse into the future... |
|
| Nov-26-09 | | frogbert: btw, morozevich is listed twice, both as
7. Alexander Morozevich (2788) and
22. Alexander Morozevitch (2750)
normalizing the spelling of his name should do the trick. |

So, to recap...
I Cheparinov vs Bologan, 2009 should be 1-0 L Dominguez vs F Caruana, 2009 should be 0-1 L Dominguez vs F Caruana, 2009 is ok, with White probably losing on time [And, as I already mentioned, game 2.6 of Tomashevsky vs Khalifman is missing.] |

| Nov-27-09 | | laskersteinitz: Hi CG,
It would be nice to be able to have a button, next to "Later Kibitzing" say, that takes you all the way to the last page of kibitzing. Often I will go to my Profile page and click to see the kibitzes following my own, and at that point I want to jump to the end. Right now I do it manually by typing in the number of the last page, but that's clearly slower than my suggestion. Thank you. ls |
