Love you guys. :D

A slight concern though, last year it seemed to me that the programmers, and/or those with the software and know-how to download and automatically search through whole databases, pretty much "owned" the clue hunt, and the less technologically savvy had but slim chances of catching a stray clue here and there. Can anything be done to redress that inequity this year?

chessgames.com: <Can anything be done to redress that inequity this year?> We recognize that situation and hope to have fewer clues which can be cracked through "brute force". The "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" clue comes to mind--it might have been quite a stumper, but a programmer located it with ease. That's not to say they were cheating in any sense of the word; it is a perfectly legitimate technique--we'll just have to change the clues so that more abstract thinking is required. We also feel sorry for the non-English members who had to suffer through those crossword puzzles (dentist's number = Novocaine, haha). And of course the math geeks will still reign supreme on certain clues. Suffice to say, we hope there's something in there for everybody this year!
Dec-04-09  technical draw: < fewer clues which can be cracked through "brute force>

I won a prize last year through "brute force" so I guess this year I'll have to be a little more brutish.

Domdaniel: <Annie> -- <inequity, redress of> Hey, Annie. I really don't think anyone would call me 'technologically savvy' - as I may have told you already, I'm currently surrounded by five busted laptops, which were broken in various amusing ways. Nor am I particularly *fast*, in general - I'm hopeless at blitz, a moron in time scrambles, and even my occasional witticisms occur to me afterewards.

L'esprit de l'escalier, the French call it -- the spirit of the staircase, because you're halfway down the stairs on the way out when the killing riposte strikes you.

Despite these handicaps (is it still OK to say that you've got handicaps? -- I think Tiger Woods does it, so it's probably linguistically kosher) - I somehow stumbled my way to five prize wins in last year's comp. Which got me a beautiful wooden Staunton set, and a CG premium membership running into 2011.

The previous year I tried just as hard and won none at all. Somebody always got there first.

I think I did best at clues which were similar to cryptic crosswords -- not everyone's cup of tea, admittedly. But, on the whole, I think CG have the spread of clue types about right.

I would say that, of course, wouldn't I?

Domdaniel: <Tabanus> Wikipedia cannot always be trusted on names. A few months ago I found that the Nobel-winning poet Seamus Heaney (real middle name: Justin) was given as 'Seamus Blowin Heaney'. And the Irish broadcaster Marian Finucane acquired a strange middle name: Marian Heldabottom Finucane.

Both errors have now been corrected on Wiki, but of course they spread into other areas, from blogs to tourism sites.

It seems to happen because incorrect factual statements in the main text of a biog are immediately challenged -- but names, particularly ethnic names that might just be plausible - tend to be taken for granted. Like, maybe those crazy Irish really do name their kids 'Heldabottom'.

We had a similar case recently right here on CG, when I submitted a game vs an opponent whose last name was 'Egan'. In Ireland this is a familiar name - a slightly unusual variant of Owen, Eogan, Hogan, et al - but I can see how others might be thrown by it.

On Wiki, some nasty little hack-vermin with a sub-adolescent sense of humour worked out that names are vulnerable to messing because civilized people take care not to offend. Ironic, kinda.

I shudder to think how many school essays now cite Blowin's Heldabottom interview. And what comes next? Garry Rybkavich Kasparov? Veselin Tchipinass Topalov? The permutations are mind-boggling.

Dec-06-09  Boomie: <Chessgames.com>

The players' game lists should be sorted by year <and> event instead of just year. It is hard to find all the games from a single event in the player's list.

Also it would be nice if the events in the players' lists were sorted by round. For example, the long matches between La Bourdenaise and McDonald, which are annotated by Morphy, would benefit greatly. Morphy refers to notes in previous games in the match but it's terribly difficult to play over these games in order.

Phony Benoni: <Boomie> That is the way it should be. It might even be possible for current events, where PGN scores come from one source and are presented in a consistent manner with complete infomation.

Unfortunately, historical events are often compiled from several sources. As a result, the event name is often presented inconsistently, and round and date information are rarely given at all.

It can take quite a bit of work to complie a collection like Game Collection: WCC Index [La Bourdonnais-McDonnell 1834], which has the games in order.

Domdaniel: Events as recent and as important as an olympiad in Italy give both 'Turin' and 'Torino' as location. Not to mention variants like 'Turin Italy', 'Torino IT', 'it Torino IT ol', etc.

Someday, maybe, someone or something will clean up every PGN in the world. But it'll be a big job: like those manure-filled royal stables that Hercules/ Herakles/ Greek Hero NN diverted a river into.

Dec-07-09  Boomie: <PB and Dom>

Yep. Logistics are a bother.

I would try including the month and day in the date sort. That should result in the desired listing.

Of course, there will be problems with PGNs missing the full date.

Dec-08-09  waddayaplay: <chessgames> thinking about sort order of games.

The games are sorted by year primarily, but what secondary? It is deceitful that they are not sorted by date -- as it is now a game played in August 2008 may come before a game played in January 2008. In some critical variations this might actually make a big difference...

Dec-08-09  zanshin: <It is deceitful that they are not sorted by date>

I'm sure you mean 'deceptive' rather than 'deceitful' which implies dishonesty. No offense .. your English is better than my Swedish ;-)

chessgames.com: <Re: sorting> We are very aware of this situation. If you are curious, there are two separate but related fields, the year and the date (which contains the year). The sort order is only on the date field (not the year), but the problem is that most of our games have partial dates like 1952-00-00, therefore the sorting gets rather pell-mell when a number of games have the exact same date. With new tournaments the games are usually in perfect round order (assuming the official site supplies the right dates) but with older games we rarely get so much information.

There are several ways to resolve this issue, including dating all games, using the TID (tournament ID) as a secondary sort field, and using the PGN's "EventDate" as a sort field. We haven't decided the best approach yet but we plan to address the issue in 2010.
