Dec-09-09  rogge: <cg.com> Mysteriously, Carlsen's bio now states he's Swedish :)

Please change it to Danish...

  chessgames.com: FYI:
During some late-night debugging there was a momentary bug in which everybody was transformed into the Chessgames account user. It was like that for perhaps 5-10 minutes. Some admin panels even opened up for regular members.

We're going over the logfiles now and to our pleasure it seems everybody was quite mature and did not disturb anything (vandalize pages, etc.). There were a few hijinks on the live game page but no damage done. Thanks for your patience, your maturity, and rest assured this won't be happening again.

  Stonehenge: <chessgames.com: I've got the avatar don't I?>

Oh avatar eh, very nice. And how'd you get that, eh? By exploiting the workers -- by hanging on to outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society! If there's ever going to be any progress--

chessgames.com: The problem was traced down to a typo. An equal sign "=" should have been written as "==". These modern computers, sometimes they are so naughty I could just pinch them.
Dec-09-09  pulsar: <CG> It was fun while it lasted. I wouldn't be whipped for some irreverent comments a while ago, would I? :)

I'm back to my old serious self...

Dec-09-09  malthrope: <CG.com> just to let you know as soon as I realized that there was something very "strange" going on I deleted my original post (where you're credited as the poster) made on the <ChessBookie>'s forum page. Then reposted with a belated PS added explaining the procedure that I followed to correct it! ;) Hope that's OK. :)

Hope all is well now and wishing you and the entire staff a very <Happy Holiday's> :D

Best Always, - Mal

PS: <"SNAFU"> - once again takes on a brand new meaning! ~lol~

Equality test instead of assignment operator .. same problem for C programmers. Maybe they should come up with smarter compilers ;-)

Dec-09-09  firebyrd: <An equal sign "=" should have been written as "==">

A good habit is writing your tests <if (0 == var)> rather than <if (var == 0)>, whenever possible, to let the compiler catch it.

Dec-09-09  zanshin: <firebyrd: A good habit is writing your tests <if (0 == var)> rather than <if (var == 0)>, whenever possible, to let the compiler catch it.>

<firebyrd> Does this work in C? Wish I had known that a few years ago - would have saved many hours debugging.

Dec-09-09  waddayaplay: <chessgames.com> Thanks for the explanation

<zanshin> Thanks for reading the post and taking the time to correct me, I do appreciate learning things :)

Dec-09-09  zarg: <zanshin: <firebyrd> Does this work in C?>

Yes it does, rvalue = lvalue is a constraint violation.

However, there is even a simpler method, just turn compiler in conforming mode and set warning level to max.

chessgames.com: We eat, breathe, and live computer programming as much as any of you, but unless it's specifically related to Chessgames this talk is better off on the Computer page.
Dec-09-09  Eyal: <CG> The London tournament uses the 3 points for a win scoring system (http://www.londonchessclassic.com/c...).

Also, just to remind you that the Naiditsch-Svidler game from round 3.2 of the World Cup is still missing from the database.

Dec-09-09  whatthefat: <chessgames.com>

I just tried a search in the Endgame Explorer for ♖♙♙ vs. ♖ with result=draw. The first couple of pages are fine (all draws), but then after that, most of the listed games are decisive. Worse still, if I now go back to one of the first two pages, those games are decisive too!

Phony Benoni: Just tried <whatthefat>'s search. RPP vs. R with a drawn result gives 444 games, When you go to a certain place in the list or try going backwards, it switches to a list of 2,199 games, which corresponds to RPP vs. R with all results.

chessgames.com: <Eyal: <CG> The London tournament uses the 3 points for a win scoring system> Oh does it really? Thanks, we have support for that but we didn't know they used that method.

<Endgame Explorer Bug> That sounds very strange, we'll look into it.

Phony Benoni: <chessgames.com> Tried it with a few other endings: BPPP vs. BPP and RPP vs. RP, with drawn results. Same phenomenon: after a certain point, the list switches to endings with all results.
Dec-09-09  whatthefat: <Phony Benoni>

Thanks for confirming I'm not crazy. :)

chessgames.com: We've often had problems with search terms being lost when using the forward and backward buttons (it's tricky business to make sure that everything is preserved), but this talk about it only malfunctioning "beyond a certain point" sounds nutty. Unfortunately we've no time to look into it at the moment, with the contest starting shortly. But thanks for pointing it out in any case.

Oh by the way, here's Naiditsch vs Svidler, 2009.

<HOW TO PLAY>

Throughout the month, right up to Christmas Eve (December 24th, 2009) we'll be releasing clues on our special Chessgames Present Hunt Clues Page. These clues can lead you to games that have a special prize-banner. The first member to click on the prize-banner wins the prize. Although you do not need to be a premium member, you MUST have a registered screen-name in order to claim your prize.

<NEW FEATURE FOR 2009>

In years past, the Chessgames fans would sit on the clues page and press reload like maniacs, hoping to be the first one to see the new clue arrive. This year we've made that practice obsolete, by announcing in clear red letters at the top of virtually every page the instant a clue become available. So just use Chessgames like you normally do, and if you happen to be online while a new clue is released, you'll find out about it as soon as you load the next page, providing a link straight to the clue. It's just that simple!
