 | | chessgames.com: <Hesam7: I posted something yesterday in the latest Carlsen - Kramnik game however I can not find it today. Do you know what happened to my post?> If by "yesterday" you mean roughly Wed Dec 9th 4:50am USA/Eastern, then it was definitely the aforementioned bug that caused about 10 minutes of posting to be lost forever. Sorry about that. |

 | | Tabanus: Dear <cg>, I can't make any bio, sleep, or even live, if you don't merge GM and FIDE Trainer Petar Genov (73 games) and Peta Genov (18 games). |

Happy Birthday btw. |

 | | chessgames.com: < I can't make any bio, sleep, or even live, >Heh, well if you put it that way how can we say no? < I assume there is no way of retrieving it, right? > Sorry Hesam, it's a goner. It's as likely to be on your computer as ours. We intentionally did the testing at 5am just in case something like that might happen but apparently even then the site was very busy. |

 | | cu8sfan: <chessgames.com> Maybe you missed my question? <cu8sfan: <Your new expiration date = 2100-08-01> As I am a lifetime subscriber, is it possible to donate my prize? Or is that too complicated for you? (Come August 2100, I'll probably regret this...)> |

 | | chessgames.com: <cu8sfan> That's covered in the Chessgames.com Holiday Present Hunt Official Rules. <I'M A LIFETIME MEMBER; WHAT HAPPENS IF I WIN A FOUR MONTH MEMBERSHIP?Sorry, your four extra months will be meaningless. Chessgames may (at its sole discretion)
randomly award these prizes to non-premium members during our "Dear Santa Contest" to be announced later in December.> It says "at our sole discretion" but in practice we've never failed to do that. So some poor Indian child who can't afford $25 will get a free year of Chessgames due to your cleverness, if that's any consolation. |

 | | cu8sfan: <if that's any consolation.> Yes, it is. Thank you very much. I'll try and aim for the DVD and book prices in the future but actually, I do the hunt for the same reason Sir Edmund Hillary climbed Mt. Everest: Because it's there. |

 | | Tabanus: <cg> Thanks! Petar Genov has now 73 + 18 = 91 games. On top it still says "Number of games in database: 73", I thought that was updated automatically? |
|
Dec-11-09
 | | Tabanus: Anyway, now it's 91 :) |

| Dec-11-09 | | whatthefat: <chessgames.com: <Ending Explorer Bug> They tell me that this problem is fixed; try it again and let us know if you have any more problems.> I'm afraid it's still not working. I just did the same test of ♖♙♙ vs. ♖ with result=draw, and it failed on the second page this time (it failed on the third page before), reverting to result=all. |
|
| Dec-11-09 | | hms123: <whatthefat> I just replicated your search and found the same problem--it failed on the second page. |

Dec-11-09
 | | chessgames.com: <I thought that was updated automatically?> It is, but only in the wee hours of the morning. We cache the header of player pages to prevent excessive computation. <I'm afraid it's still not working.> No worries, we know where the problem lies now. Incidentally as far as we can tell it's always been this way, amazing that nobody has reported this bug until now. I guess the Endgame Explorer isn't a very popular feature. A chess coach once told me "Studying endings is like swallowing icky-tasting medicine. It's good for you but nobody wants to do it." |

 | | tpstar: <Endgame Explorer> <it's always been this way> Yes, the search falls apart after a few pages. I thought the bug was unfixable before, but I'm glad it's better now. =) I use the Endgame Explorer for my students, and the most common PGN deficiency is unmarked checks. Some major piece endgames have over 10 of them, yet the game still plays so it's no big deal. Is it possible to write a program that would screen for missed checks in the PGN and correct them? Then users could submit examples to the site (like submissions for the Pun Voting Booth) to be fixed automatically. One thing less to be done by hand. =) |

Dec-11-09
 | | chessgames.com: <Is it possible to write a program that would screen for missed checks in the PGN and correct them?> It can be done, but it's fairly complicated. We've already written a program called "fixpgn" that solves all manner of PGN problems, but it's not smart enough yet to detect that the check and checkmate symbols are correctly placed, at least not yet. |

 | | chessgames.com: We love this new feature for the Holiday Contest. At the top of the page right now it says in bright peach color, < There is a clue unsolved right now on the Chessgames Present Hunt Clues Page! > This feature is the result of the early morning programming the other day which caused that small ruckus and a few messages to be deleted. In previous years some people would visit Chessgames because of the contest, and that's great--but instead of using the site normally they would just sit on the clues page and press reload. That was never our intention; we want to encourage people to actually use the site, not just press "reload" until their fingers hurt. Now the playing field is leveled and about a thousand people are trying to figure out clue #9, all simultaneously. We wonder how long this one will last. It's a pretty tough one--might take 15 minutes or so. ;-) |
