 | | chessgames.com: <If I use the search on the front page for games with no more than zero moves, it returns no results.> That's somewhat intentional. There are some searches like "Not a Draw" or "Number of moves greater than 2" or "Year is at least 1600" which would return so many results we want to short-circuit the search before it ever hits the database. In cases where the short-circuiting fails, the database starts to gather results then stops itself when it realizes the magnitude of the query. That's when you get an error of the sort <ERROR: Over 536,000 games match your query.
Please select more restrictions on your search.> In short, if you stuff weird things into the search engine, expect weird things back. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Annie K. Akshully, I just dropped by to say that the LOLspeak klu is absolutely squee, that is, <adorable>. :D> O HAI! GLD U LIKED IT. MEBBE IF U LUCKIE U GET MOAR CLUEZ LIKE DAT ONE L8R IN DE KONTEST! Seriously though, did you know that the World Record of the "smallest LOLcat on the internet" belongs to Chessgames.com? It appears as #1541 in our avatar gallery: http://www.chessgames.com/av/face_1...
The cat playing chess presumably is about to promote a pawn, so he says "I CAN HAS QUEEN LOL" ... all squeezed into a 48x48 pixel square, complete with the blocky white letters w/ black edges. We've never seen a LOLcat smaller than that one. If somebody can find one then we will retract our claim to the record. |

 | | Annie K.: Way kewl! =) If I hadn't grown so attached to my own avvie, which I originally just picked from the library here, that now I use it everywhere (copies, no can has stolen bandwidth, I nose!) :D I might have considered switching to it. I made two (bigger) chess themed ones too - one based on a bigger version of my avatar (http://cheezburger.com/View.aspx?ai...), and one (http://cheezburger.com/View.aspx?ai...) based on my favorite Quote of the Day here: <There are many positions in which one cannot get away with "general principles" or knowledge: one must roll up one's sleeves get down to "If I go here, he might go there and then... --- Amatzia Avni> (I also have others that are actually in LOLspeak...) ;) |

 | | Phony Benoni: Sometimes, I get the feeling cg.com runs this contest so that intensive use of the search function will uncover bugs. |

|
| Dec-19-09 | | Blunderdome: <Phony Benoni> it might also be good for their daily # of hits, with people checking several hundred pages when they are hunting down a clue. |
|
| Dec-20-09 | | Benzol: <chessgames> Could you please upload the games Goffin - Thornton 2003 and Chistiakov - Shashin 1960 so the collections to which they belong can be completed. Thanks in advance. :) |

| Dec-21-09 | | MostlyAverageJoe: Obscure bug report. Advanced search for player name "Last" returns this: Sorry, we have no names that exactly match 'LAST' in our database. It should return this player: R Last |

 | | al wazir: <CG>: Since you guys started this site to make money and since, judging by the number of comments it generates, the Holiday Present Hunt is the most popular feature on the site with the possible exception of Wesley So's forum, why don't you bag everything else and just run year-round Present Hunts? The only thing you need to do differently is to limit participation to premium members. I make this suggestion in all seriousness and with total modesty and humility. All I ask in return is a 10% cut of the payments you collect from the new enrollees. |

| Dec-21-09 | | arctic tern: <chessgames> A bug - you can't get to the pages of players whose names begin with O' (O'Donnell, etc), from the player directory. The error message <Unknown player 'tom o%27donnell'> (or O'Kelly, etc) pops up. I've just tried it with the search box instead and it seems to ignore the O' as well. Typing O'Donnell gives the page for Brian Donnell instead. |

 | | Annie K.: Yeah, it's the apostrophe. It's also a major pain in the Search Kibitzing function - words/names with an apostrophe in them (integral or possessive) are simply unsearchable AFAIK. :s Any chance of doing anything about that <cg.com>? BTW, clue #38 was evil, just evil. Well done! ;) |

| Dec-22-09 | | DCP23: This player Valentina Gounina is a doppelganger for the real Valentina Gunina , please merge. |
|
| Dec-22-09 | | DCP23: When searching for http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... games between Julia and Julia, the result set is duplicated. |

| Dec-22-09 | | zarg: <chessgames.com>
Sometimes when posting e.g. tables of data, I would like to keep spaces i.e. avoid <cg> from replacing multiple spaces with a single one ... and use a font like e.g. <new courier> which preserve column alignment of the displayed text. Also turn off special display rules when { } and <> is used would be nice... Is there a way to achieve this, for example by enclosing the posted text in some special tags?? |
|
| Dec-22-09 | | mccraw: Dear Chessgames:
Pardon if you have answered this already... Why in Sam Hill--after 3 rounds of the Russian Super-Ch--has Chessgames not put up any games yet??? |
|
Dec-23-09
 | | Peligroso Patzer: When are you going to get some games posted for the Russian Championship Superfinal (2009) ? |
|

 | | Domdaniel: Another tiny bug. This guy -- G Buck -- has just one game in the database, but his name there is 'Buk'. |
|
Dec-23-09
 | | Domdaniel: <chessgames> Thanks for the reminder in my forum about the prize. I *am* having trouble sending emails right now, but I'll make sure you get one by tomorrow. Thanks, and have a good Christmas. |

 | | OhioChessFan: If I have a person on ignore, and they posted on my forum, would their message be readable for everyone else? |
|
| Dec-23-09 | | YouRang: <OhioChessFan> My recollection is this: If they post in your chessforum BEFORE you put them on ignore, then you won't be able to read their posts, but others will. But AFTER you put a user on ignore, that user won't be able to post in your forum at all. That's my recollection anyway...could be faulty. |
|
Dec-24-09
 | | OhioChessFan: Ah, <YouRang> if there is anyone on this site who would understand my concern, it's you. ;) |
|
| Dec-24-09 | | zanshin: <OCF> <YouRang> That's pretty cool. I didn't know that. I suspect one reason people might hesitate to use the ignore function is because they worry that their own forums might get spammed by the person(s) they are ignoring. I tested this out using an old account which I put on ignore, then tried posting in my forum. I got the following response (I wish I could copy the graphic of the policeman with the changing hand): ERROR: You cannot post to this chessforum.
You are being ignored by zanshin. |
|
Dec-24-09
 | | OhioChessFan: <zanshin> my concern is that though there's a few people I don't want to read, I don't want to keep them from participating in the prediction contest held in my forum. |
