jessicafischerqueen: Thanks for cleaning up the duplicate games on the first two <Rossolimo> pages- I appreciate it very much.
Jan-09-11  DanLanglois: M Milicevic vs Velimirovic, 1961, is listed as a Benoni Defense: Hromodka System (A56). Which is to say, 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 c5 3. d5 d6. Which is true, as far as it goes. But after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 d6 4.Nc3 g6 5.e4 Bg7 6. Be2, we reach this, an E73 King's Indian Defence:

& Kindij vs Velimirovic, 1961 is an E70 King's Indian Defence.

And, Gligoric vs Velimirovic, 1962, listed as a Benoni Defense: Modern Variation (A56), starts with 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 g6 4.Nc3 Bg7 5. e4 O-O 6. Nf3 d6 7. Be2 e5 which is an E92 King's Indian/Petrosian Variation.

And, D Marovic vs Velimirovic, 1963 is an E64 King's Indian/Yugoslav Variation (though it is listed as a Benoni Defense: Hromodka System (A56)).

Udovcic vs Velimirovic, 1963 is an A63 Benoni/Fianchetto Variation (listed as Benoni Defense: Modern Variation (A56)).

E Cobo Arteaga vs Velimirovic, 1963 is an E92 King's Indian/Petrosian Variation (listed as Benoni Defense: Modern Variation (A56)).

R Jovanic vs Velimirovic, 1963 is an A62 Benoni/Fianchetto Variation (not Benoni Defense: Modern Variation (A56)).

Jan-10-11  Benzol: <chessgames> Thankyou for finally looking into and processing those uploads.

However, can you tell what happened to the games Boleslavsky - Nedeljkovic USSR vs Yugoslavia Match played in Leningrad in 1957 and Boleslavsky - Mikhlin Belorussia Championship played in Minsk in 1959?

Jan-10-11  RonB52734: cg: If I'm not mistaken, this is an error in the opening explorer. I'm looking at a line of play in which an en passant capture is not available, but, due to a transposition, OE brings back a game with a different move order and tells me that indeed an en passant capture is one of the possible moves.   chessgames.com: Benzol:

Boleslavsky vs S Nedeljkovic, 1957 was passed over because it looked too much like another game, but it's in the db now.

Boleslavsky vs Mikhlin, 1959 was rejected because it had two results (1-0 in the header, and 0-1 at the end of the game). We're going to go out on a limb and assume it was 1-0.

chessgames.com: <RonB52734> The Opening Explorer doesn't differentiate between positions that look the same but differ due to en passant conditions. You might call it a bug but it's actually intentional: there are scenarios where it's more useful to see it behave the way it does. If you are examining an opening with en passant possibilities, this underscores the importance of the move order. Think of it this way: if you see a position with an "illegal" en passant option, you know that there is some other way to get into that position such that the en passant is legal. Whether it's better to keep it legal or not can be discerned from the Opening Explorer stats.

This always gets rather confusing; I hope that's a clear enough answer.

Jan-11-11  crawfb5: While we're on the subject of recent PGN processing, I have about 75 Jackson Whipps Showalter match games in the hopper along with about 30 or so games from Ramsgate 1929. Any chance of those getting processed in the near future?

<CG> Great stuff. Don't worry the bough is not about to break on you because your assumption is correct and the Boleslavsky collection is now complete. Many thanks.

Jan-11-11  achieve: <CG> A cautionary note re this Denis Shmeliov player, who made a GM norm at the 2011 Berkeley Int. - his name is spelled both at the Fide as well as tourny website as follows:

Denys Shmelov

Perhaps you can change the name, also in the directory, to accommodate searches and in an attempt to avoid future "player A and B are the same..."

Jan-11-11  achieve: Here's the same fella, first one correct spelling: Denys Shmelov and Denis Shmeliov

What was that saying again...?

"An y for an i"

(..and drop the second eye - Couldn't resist)

In Russian: http://www.russiankidscenter.com/cl.... The e with two dots on top of it is a 'jolka'.

Jan-11-11  achieve: hmmm...?

2011 Berkeley International - Update:

<Dutch Grandmaster Loek Van Wely (NED 2676) took the first place with 8 points from 10 rounds. He also earned 3000 USD for the effort. Second place for GM Sergey Erenburg (ISR 2600, 7.5 points), who was joint leader with Van Wely earlier, but then stumbled against << Denys Shmelov >> in the penultimate round>

<Denys Shmelov (2357) and FM Keaton Kiewra (2337) made Grandmaster norms.>

http://www.fide.com/component/conte...

The plot thickens, I've done everything in my power!

CG - one more thing; There are player pages plus collected games for both L Schut, and Lisa Schut. Same person.

Stonehenge: The problem is perhaps the transliteration. Since he is from Ukraine -not from Russia- 'Denys' may very well be correct.

OK, enough already.

<CG> How about a little forum for Tata Steel (Corus)?

Jan-11-11  achieve: <stonehenge> Right. So now it's just a matter of arriving at a well thought out- and supported- decision.

Personally I hope CG will adhere to the most natural spelling, and STICK to it.

Jan-11-11  acirce: <chessgames.com> You need to get rid of your classification of games as "classical", "rapid", etc. It's nothing close to accurate when it comes to modern games, and it doesn't get any closer. Every day it fools people into believing in false statistics, so my strong advice is to just get rid of it. It's not meaningless, it's harmful.
Jan-11-11  chesstoplay: Hi < chessgames.com > ,

I've sent e-mails to Daniel Freeman without a reply.

Please check his/your e-mail and have someone call me.

It's a great thing that is out there for CG to take advantage of.

Thanks!

chessgames.com: <chesstoplay> Daniel received your email and is very excited about it. He will contact you tomorrow. Thanks very much.

<acirce> Your criticism is well noted. We are intending that this feature will eventually (but not immediately) solve these issues, but the argument can be made that it should be hidden from view for the time being.

<notyetagm> Yes, we'll get to it shortly.

Jan-11-11  chesstoplay: TY for the heads up - I'm excited, too.

I turn that phone on at 10 AM CST.

Jan-12-11  acirce: <but the argument can be made that it should be hidden from view for the time being.>

Is there any reason NOT to do this?

Jan-12-11  hms123: <chessgames.com> Have the "mailable' prizes from the <Present Hunt> been sent yet? No hurry--just wondering.
Jan-12-11  crawfb5: Thanks for processing my uploads, especially the Showalter match games. They're part of a bigger project on matches for the US championship prior to its change to tournament format in 1936. It's just getting started, with a meta collection (Game Collection: US Championship matches (meta)) linking to individual collections for each match. I've been having reasonable success locating games so far, so expect future submissions...

I started this based on a suggestion by <Phony Benoni>, but the deeper in I get, the more I think about Tom Sawyer whitewashing a fence...
