| May-06-11 | | Open Defence: amazing, one of the most important chess events of the year is underway and most of this site has disintegrated into name calling and bickering |
|
| May-06-11 | | pulsar: <OD> A proof that important events do not advance civilization. |
|
| May-06-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: Lots of downright silly stuff showing up ...
IDEA - allow me control over all the pages where I am one of the players. I will police it and get rid of ALL the bad stuff ... you guys have enought to do. (I sent you an e-mail to this effect ...) |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> - < Until then, just don't visit his page if you find it offensive.> That's fine, but these *seriously offensive* titles for game collections are usually visible on the gamepage of any game in the list. These include games which people legitimately visit regularly, such as a recent game of the day. I'd already asked for what AJ is now looking for, editorial control over kibitzing on pages where one is a player. I was politely refused. It seems reasonable as a way of dealing with sociopaths like Lennonfan/Lenny/Mark C Finan of Wakefield (etc etc) ... but such powers might be abused. In certain cases. |

| May-06-11 | | Open Defence: <Until then, just don't visit his page if you find it offensive.> same goes for the site.... |
|
| May-06-11 | | Pyke: User: Bartongayos another one to purge. In my opinion this is simply WAY beyond offensive ... |
|
| May-06-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: <Pyke> Good job, but I am sure that several people have already flagged that one. |

 | | tpstar: <chessgames.com> You have said many times that you don't want individual kibitzers having any delete power, as the potential for abuse is just too high. Then again, recent obscene and profane postings (in the form of Game Collection captions) have required several hours to remove, meanwhile dozens if not hundreds of visitors saw them. Please consider a Zap feature where a select group of your most trusted users can remove blatantly offensive content. These Zap events would have an automatic information sheet indicating the problem poster, the post removed, and any other details for your permanent log, similar to the Whistle function. If anyone misuses this option, take their privileges away. This Zap App must be kept confidential. Period. None of this "Big Three" business and none of this chessforum crowd elitism where people are judged based on the "value" of their "contributions" or whatever. You do not want middlemen getting involved over their head. Then again, many users spend more time here than you do, and could immediately pounce on obvious violations. Your "Trust No One" motto has served you well since you began, but maybe now it is time to accept more help. I believe the Zap program would be a big success, and definitely worth a try, if you find the right Ministrators. Thank you. |

 | | chessgames.com: Our previous suggestion < Until then, just don't visit his page if you find it offensive.> was sincere but may have sounded snarky. It did not recognize the main problem that DomDaniel outlined, that high profile games (GoTD etc.) so that they are visible to thousands of users. We just took some measures to address that problem which will work best if we don't discuss them in detail. If all works well, we won't be seeing those insane babblings at the bottom of game pages. Regarding tpstar's suggestion of creating a small group of admins to police the forums 24/7: it's a plausible idea that we've resisted in the past simply because there didn't seem to be a dire need for it. I believe it's time to revisit that plan. |

 | | chessgames.com: Here's a happier topic:
People who have submitted game corrections in the past have gotten accustomed to the random and excruciatingly long turnaround times. We now have an eager and bright database administrator who has been furiously processing the backlog of correction slips, fixing over 1000 players and games so far. While she continues to eliminate the backlog, we give priority to NEW corrections, so if you submit a correction today you should only have a turnaround time of a few days. If you are waiting on an old correction slip for some mistake that's really been bugging you, feel free to submit it again, and it will be quickly fixed. In short, the correction slip feature is working better than ever before, so don't be shy to use it. |

 | | Domdaniel: Welcome, o Eager and Bright database administrator person. All is well. Much weller than before, anyhow.
Thanks, CG |

| May-06-11 | | hms123: <chessgames.com> I fully support <tpstar's> notion of a <zap> team of some sort. Here's part of a post I made earlier today at <Once's> forum: <I do think that chessgames ought to have some volunteer monitors assigned to certain pages on request. These people would have to be trusted members of the site, but I can think of lots of people who would make sense in such a role.I can imagine a list of such people and the affected person (e.g., AJ) would ask for someone to be assigned (perhaps rank-ordering his preferences).> |

| May-06-11 | | DrNyet: How does one look up the page for a specific user?
Thanks |

May-06-11
 | | chessgames.com: Dr. Nyet, scroll down on this page, and there is a small form that says "View another user profile: ______" |

 | | chessgames.com: We recently added a new gametype: "ARMAGEDDON". We might have categorized those games as 'unorthodox' but since FIDE has embraced this format for many years now we really should recognize these games with a special designation. Does anybody happen to know of a game collection or other list of Armageddon games, so that we can correctly classify them? |

 | | Phony Benoni: They ain't kidding, folks. I just noticed a correction I submitted a couple of days ago has been fixed. |
|
| May-06-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: I certainly think its a good idea.
Bad language / sexual stuff should never be allowed to remain here for any time at all. (Too many young kids come here - I shudder to see their parent's reaction at some of this junk.) |
|
| May-06-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: Another problem you guys should SERIOUSLY address: <sock-puppet> accounts. (I am sure that some of the trolls here have 30+ accounts! It has been proven recently - that if one user wants to invest the time ... he can create a nearly endless amount of <false> handles / dual accounts.) I DO know it is possible to trace and track IP's, ICC used to do it. (Many on-line game sites only allow ONE account per IP/computer.) If "Chess Games" could institute (and effectively enforce) this policy, I am betting that 95% (or more!) of your problems go away overnight. Premium members are NOT the ones causing most/all of the problems, and I am sure that you will acknowledge this fact. Once the new policy goes into effect, you could just simply send an e-mail ... and inform the user that he/she gets to pick JUST ONE account ... |
|
| May-06-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: Of course, the alternative is that ONLY Premium members be allowed to comment on games / build game collections ... |
|
| May-07-11 | | hms123: <AJ> Some of us have more than one premium account (e.g., User: hms123 and User: chessbookforum). I also (with permission from the admins) opened this non-premium account User: team member advice for use in the Team games against GMs. Most of the game collections by non-premium members are very useful. What if a premium member who built a game collection wants to edit it after dropping (perhaps temporarily) the premium membership? I think you are on to something with the monitoring of IP addresses, but it may be too easy to get around that barrier. I think the admins are aware that they need to figure out more than one way of increasing their vigilance on this issue--i.e., some combination of technology and volunteer help is probably needed. |

| May-07-11 | | shivasuri4: <chessgames.com>,all the kibitzes appear smaller and they cover only half my screen.Please help! |

 | | Annie K.: <shivasuri4> you have probably accidentally made the text size of your browser smaller. What browser are you using? (browser = Internet Explorer, FireFox, etc.) |
|
| May-07-11 | | shivasuri4: Firefox,<Annie K.>.I was just scrolling the page and the kibitzes suddenly changed size. |
|
May-07-11
 | | Annie K.: <shivasuri4> aha, that's what happens when you hit the Ctrl button while scrolling. You can reverse the text size to your usual settings the same way (hold Ctrl and scroll). :) |
|
| May-07-11 | | shivasuri4: Right,thanks <Annie K.>,got it back into proper shape. |
