kutztown46: <chessgames.com> I also had a problem about two weeks ago trying to update the customization of my menu. At home, I use Google Chrome, and I was unable to make any changes at all. So I made the changes from my computer at work, which uses IE8.

I was going to mention it but never got around to it. Sorry.

Jul-05-11  twinlark: Any chance of including the games of the Zhejiang Lishui Xingqiu Open that are available (about 20) into the database? It was won by Le Quang Liem with Yangyi Yu in second and has some games by some interesting up and coming players. PGN file can be found here: http://ratings.fide.com/view_games....
Jul-05-11  wordfunph: <chessgames.com: So in short, I think we can solve the madness on the Wesley So page with some cooperation of a few of the good posters who speak Tagalog and enjoy Chessgames. They need to not be so bashful about using the Whistle feature, or about translating some Tagalog.>

"salamat" or thank you, <CG>..

Jul-05-11  pulsar: I've seen <Appaz>'s "English-only" post earlier and could only grin. It misses the point completely. One doesn't exclude a language in an "international" site, it is rather encouraged. Companies who aim to expand their global presence have resorted to multi-language translation feature to accommodate all. I trust <CG> to have sense enough to reject <Appaz>'s primitive request.

Jul-05-11  pulsar: <Whereas I think it's innately rude to be a visitor to someone else's home and not speak their language.>

If you can, why not. And the owner doesn't force you because he or she understands that your native language is different. But not all house owners are like that, of course.

tpstar: I will call the question here. Many of us have found our names and handles within Tagalog postings on the Wesley So page and within BW members' chessforums. Clearly they wanted us to know we were being discussed without understanding the content. "Friendly" and "welcoming" indeed. The BW reads every page, so they saw all that already, and don't deny it.

I knew his name wasn't "Iam Obientag" but that's what he put in his profile. Then I saw <Edmund> and <Obien> making fun of me. In Tagalog.

Speaking of etiquette, it is such a shame the BW taught Wesley So to swear. What was that about global presence again?

Jul-05-11  pulsar: <tpstar> Oh, we taught him a lot, as you know. We even taught him chess and are responsible for his being a GM, etc.

If you want to discuss like this then it would go on and on.

chessgames.com: <twinlark: Any chance of including the games of the Zhejiang Lishui Xingqiu Open that are available (about 20) into the database?> We'd like to, but we need to find better PGN than what the FIDE site offers. They only have rounds 1 & 2, and even worse, none of the games have dates except for one. That one reads "2009.09.17", but I'm guessing this tournament wasn't really from 2009 was it?

Don't worry though, we can probably get a clean version of the PGN from another source. I

Jul-06-11  nescio: <chessgames.com: [...] but I'm guessing this tournament wasn't really from 2009 was it?>

Nevertheless: http://www.365chess.com/tournaments... (90 games)

It's always posssible though that there has been a similar tournament later, I suppose.

Jul-06-11  twinlark: <ceegee> I think it actually was from 2009. Reporting from China is haphazard, and they frequently don't supply any sort of PGN files to FIDE.

chessgames.com: Here you go XingQiu Open (2009).
Jul-06-11  twinlark: Thanks <ceegee>. These games also introduce World U12 champion, Wei Yi, a player who has been at the top of his age group for some time now so is likely to be the real deal.

This 11 or 12 year old boy scored a draw against GM Zhou Jianchao when he (ie: Wei Yi) was an unrated 7 or 8 year old in his first FIDE rated tournament which was, believe it or not, the B group of the 2007 Chinese Championship, and he's continued to prosper since then, beating Ni Hua a few months ago.

There's a game in the XingQiu Open 2009 that he played with the sort of maturity that is rarely seen in a 9 or 10 year old, namely Xiu Deshun vs Wei Yi, 2009, where the GM tried to outwit the child in the endgame and nearly lost.

The reason I mention all this is that there are players who take some time to hit the event horizon here, especially the young champions, as well as many Chinese and other Asian players. May I ask if you have any particular system for drawing these players and the events in which they play into your database? I know there's a general standard of play that acts as some sort of filter so you're not out to include games from the U8 world championships for example, but many events such as the Olympiads and many Opens will include games well below this standard.

Jul-06-11  ughaibu: In a rather important game to have such a mistake, black's 35th appears to be incorrect: Lasker vs Steinitz, 1894
Jul-06-11  ughaibu: Here too: Lasker vs Steinitz, 1894 black's 51st.
Jul-07-11  shivasuri4: Are players in the 1920s sometimes assigned Chessmetrics ratings?

chessgames.com: <Stonehenge: <CG> Better check out this user's profile ... > We know about accounts like that. We get maybe 20-30 spam signups a day. From time to time we purge them all (they make it easy for us to identify them with their weird ... syntax). I'm going to delete your posts just to make sure they don't get any extra Google-juice.

<shivasuri4: Are players in the 1920s sometimes assigned Chessmetrics ratings?> Not by us, but it's possible that some other database has done this and then we ended up with the games. If you notice any player before FIDE ratings show up with a rating, let us know, as we need to fix that.

Jul-09-11  bartonlaos: One of the editors at Wiki posted a deletion warning about the CG site located there.

"Proposing article for deletion per WP:PROD - March 2011"

"This article thoroughly deserves deletion. - April 2011"

A warning now appears on its page:

<"This article does not cite any references or sources. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. <Unsourced material may be challenged and removed.> (April 2011)">

Thought someone would like to know, to avoid any extended hassle in the future.

tpstar: User: ZeroOne uploaded our project in 2007, then <TheFocus> updated it in March 2011. Other active Wikipedia Editors here are <BishopBerkeley> <FSR> <JustToClarify> <MrMelad> and <perfidious> plus the guy who tried to create Wikipedia entries for his pets. =)

For the record, someone removed <Ed Trice> along the way.

Jul-09-11  bartonlaos: <tpstar - the pets guy> lol - That was the pre-med, Sentricelcub or something. Well, hopefully one of the many Wiki editors here will send a message to the new guy and set him straight about Chessgames.com.
