 | | chessgames.com: <OhioChessFan: I recently asked and you gave a definite maybe on searches of profiles. Would it be feasible to limit the new kibitzing search function to various features: Games (only), player pages(only), forums(only), etc?> I see, like a checkbox array [ ] games [ ] player pages [ ] user-forums [ ] system-forums [ ] tournaments [ ] openings Not a bad idea, surely worth a "definite maybe". We should always be happy to add to the search-kibitzing functionality since it's a premium only feature. In principle we should be able to make it more powerful than your run-of-the-mill forum search. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Why are there some Guess the Move games with hundreds of attempts?> A handful of them have been used as free promotions, e.g. the one on the banner ad from the homepage Guess-the-Move: Kasparov vs Ulf Andersson, 1981 is always free. It's not the only one; even if we don't have the Morphy ad on our homepage at the moment, if you track down that game, you find that it's free as well. I'm not sure which games you have noticed but if they happen to be the freebie games then that solves that mystery. Otherwise I'd just guess they are popular games. |

[ ] games [ ] player pages [ ] user-forums [ ] system-forums [ ] tournaments [ ] openings > A checkbox array. That's such an efficient way of stating what I meant. The hompepage free game......that explains that. Kasparov/Andersson was one I noticed for sure. It's pushing 400 tries. A great game, but not the first Kaspy game I'd have expected. OTOH, some of them are the old standards you'd expect to be played a lot. |

| Sep-20-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: I submitted two of my games quite some timne ago. One is a brilliant win vs. R. Phillips. (Over 2000, former master.) The other is a draw vs. Jim Rouselle. (USCF 2300+) Any idea when these might turn up? Do I need to re-submit them? |

| Sep-22-11 | | Shams: <AJ><How long does it take to fix one simple bug???????> You know what, pal, the software is in BETA. You can tell that because on the landing page it says: <B E T A> <T E S T> Getting huffy because one has flagged a bug and it hasn't been fixed is about the lamest move you can pull as a beta tester. Find NEW bugs, A.J. NEW ones. I've run beta tests at Microsoft and we just ignore people like you. Say, I bet you get that a lot, don't you? |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <CG> I've been playing Guess-the-Move lately and several things have mystified me, most recently this.
Opening Explorer The main line here (as you can see) is 10.Nbd2. Yet play it in GTM and it's worth 0 points! (Unless, of course, it actually happens in the game.) Is this a known bug?
(Obviously I don't really know, but I suspect this could be caused by GTM's well-known move ambiguity problem - GTM will refer to both Nbd2 and Nfd2 as simply "Nd2", and Nfd2 here probably <is> worth a zero. If my guess is right then similar problems probably happen in every possible case of move ambiguity, and the only solution involves tinkering with the code a bit then processing every single game again... so I hope I'm wrong.) |

Is it possible to search for kibitzes by a particular user? I am looking for games where Peter Svidler had White and I <notyetagm> kibitzed on the game. Thanks |

 | | kingscrusher: Hi Chessgames.com
I played Matthew Piper last night - a very strong 2350 FIDE player in a team blitz tournament. His page at Chessgames.com doesn't seem too emphatic about how strong he is. I think there is a missing "Britbase" database you could import here with credit to John Saunders if possible. John Saunders is on Facebook. I could contact him if you would like me to ask. The current Piper page:
Matthew Piper
really doesn't show the absolute strength of the player - I think he is great positionally and tactically. Recent London Classic he did well I think too. Also maybe it is possible via Facebook to invite the 2300+ Fide players to add their PGN games to the Chessgames.com database. But easier would just be to get an import of Britbase which has key events like 4NCL: http://www.saund.co.uk/britbase/ |

<There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire to become a great writer. When asked to define "great" he said, "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level. Stuff that will make them scream, cry, and howl in pain and anger!"He now works for Microsoft, writing error messages. > |

 | | Domdaniel: <Kingscrusher> You slightly underestimate CG's familiarity with the database circuit. John Saunders is a member and an occasional kibitzer here, and Britbase games have been imported in chunks in the past, as have games from Mark Orr's Irish database. Perhaps an upgrade would help, though. There are other strong players who are under-represented, including several IMs. |

 | | chessgames.com: <kingscrusher> This is a phenomenon that we see a lot: a very strong player has only a handful of games here, and they are mostly losses. The key to understanding this phenomenon is that since they are only represented by extremely high category events, we see them only in events where they--as good as they are--find themselves outclassed by the competition. Look who Piper lost to: Chowdhury, Chandler, Szabo, and Hebden. Most players would lost if paired like that; it's nothing to be ashamed of, and yet we understand the desire to "set the record straight." I'm sure Piper has 100s of wins against lesser players (by definition, that is how one becomes an FM or IM!) and that is the key to "fixing" this problem: add more games. We're always happy to take games from players who feel misrepresented in the database because, in fact, they are. |

 | | chessgames.com: <whiteshark> A long time ago we used it to store an internal report of the number of search terms that people typed in to find Chessgames. How did you find it? |
|
Sep-25-11
 | | chessgames.com: <SwitchingQuylthulg> I'm really not sure what's going on there. The intended behavior is that the Opening Explorer phase of Guess-the-Move should be very forgiving if you suggest a move that is the "normal" move, even if it's not he move actually played. I'm sure you've seen the penalty "That move has a poor reputation"; that means that according to the Opening Explorer the move is not played much and when it has been played it didn't work out very well. Chess engines are not used for that assessment; just historical stats. You make it sound like the normal move is begin penalized in these rare cases. That sounds like a bug. I as well hope it's got nothing to do with knight disambiguation. |
