| Sep-27-11 | | technical draw: <You only won last year by passing out free balut.> That's why you don't win. It's not balut but cold cash and a job in the white house that wins votes. |

| Sep-28-11 | | dakgootje: Hey Ceegee, the game classifications [in classical, rapid et cetera] is nice and all - but wouldn't it be much more useful if we could search for them? e.g. "Anand vs Kramnik Rapid" giving only their rapid games. |

 | | Check It Out: CG, I was checking out the <Example Search> links below the <HOT GAMES> section on the home page, and something seems strange. For example, clicking on the second link <Talkin' Tal> takes you here:http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches..., yet typing the same into the search box takes you here:search "Talkin%27 Tal". Likewise, clicking on <So, What's Up?> takes you here:http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches..., while typing it in takes you here:search "So%2C What%27s Up%3F" What gives with the example search section? |

In response to <CIO's> question, my guess is that you linked <Talkin' Tal> to http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... without actually doing the search. It seems you may have done the same with at least some of the others. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: The search titles are just semi-funny jokes, not examples of what you're supposed to type. (http://www.chessgames.com/ezsearch...., on the other hand, provides examples of real searches.) Typing "Talkin' Tal" in the EZ search (or any other search) isn't even supposed to give you Tal games with kibitzing. The name "Example Searches" can be a bit misleading that way, but quite a few of the examples aren't related to the EZ search in any way anyway. (Indeed, many of them are game collections, presumably found using Game Collection Search.) It has to be said some examples are misleading in another way - giving one a bad idea of what it's possible to search for. The Chessgames Menchik Club - supposedly Vera Menchik's wins against men (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...) - in fact includes plenty of games against women, and CG doesn't offer any way to filter those out... yet. |

 | | chessgames.com: <dakgootje> The day is coming soon when you'll be able to search on the game-type, but not yet. Keep in mind that it wasn't long ago when we had requests to trash the feature altogether due to its rampant inaccuracies. Now that things are improving, offering it as a search will be the next step. |

 | | chessgames.com: Regarding <EXAMPLE SEARCHES> There is a lot of history behind this weird feature. In the beginning (back in 2002 or so) we had this very powerful search engine that could answer questions like "Kasparov winning with the Gruenfeld in less than 30 moves" or "Karpov Queen's Indian endgames over 80 moves" or "Capablanca plays a GM draw under 15 moves", or just about anything you could image. Putting such immense power at people's fingertips, we were a little depressed to discover that 99% of people came to enter a search no more complicated than "FISCHER" (by itself). And so, the example searches were added as if to say "Hey! You can do more than just name a player! Look at all the cool things you can do with our advanced search engine!" • "Talking Tal" was supposed to be a cute way of saying "All games involving Tal that contain kibitzing". It was more relevant back in 2002 when most of his games did NOT contain kibitzing. • "So, What's Up?" is just a humorous way of saying "Wesley So games with kibitzing." • Another great example, "How not to play Bird's opening" is a witty way of saying "ECO=A02, moves<18, result=0-1. All of the searches in the list are searches you can construct yourself (if you have enough savvy!) with our Advanced Search. It's supposed to inspire you to think up other interesting searches and give you ideas of how to actually use the search engine. However the examples you show--like typing "So, what's up?" into our EZ Search--is totally wrong. You can't expect it to understand what you are talking about. Those goofy titles are just us trying to be humorous, we didn't mean to imply that the software can read minds. Also please note that there is a difference between the "EZ Search" at the top of the page and the more complicated Advanced Search below it. Most of the really interesting searches come from the Advanced Search, although the EZ Search is appropriate for 90%+ of all searches people make. |
|
| Sep-29-11 | | hms123: <cg> Thanks for the explanation. That makes a lot of sense. Now when exactly does the <read minds> feature go live? :-) |
|
Sep-29-11
 | | Check It Out: <CG> Thanks for that detailed and interesting answer. Why did you do away with the powerful search engine you had in 2002? Certainly people would want to use that feature now, even if they didn't back then. |

| Sep-29-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: Serious question:
Is against the rules to submit a game for another player? (Just curious.) My friend, James Rousselle, he e-mailed me a game. He was unsure of how to (correctly) generate the PGN, so I offered to do it for him. Is this like "against the rules," or anything like that? In other words, do you prefer that an active player submit his own games ... OK judges, what's the ruling? |
|

 | | WannaBe: <Benzol> have submitted thousands of games, of players that are active/retired/semi-retired/living/pearly gates. As long as it is within the ELO criteria, I don't see why you can't submit game(s) of another person. |

Sep-29-11
 | | chessgames.com: <Is against the rules to submit a game for another player?> Of course not; almost all of our games are submitted by people other than themselves. |

| Sep-30-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: Thanks for the answer, I did not want to do something that was frowned on. |
|
| Sep-30-11 | | Shams: <People didn't know this? If this was a POTD, it'd be a Monday.> I can't tell if you're joking.
Count me among those totally confused by the "EZ Search" functionality. I don't think I've even played around with it in years. |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> - Mark Finan, lennonfan is back again, this time as User: Pocksucket Worse than before, if possible.
Somebody is going to have to tidy up the mess and make sure he can't do it again. This isn't flaming: this is sick, obnoxious slander. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <People didn't know this? If this was a POTD, it'd be a Monday.> <Shams: I can't tell if you're joking.> I wasn't joking. I thought that it was painfully obvious what those descriptions would bring back in a search. I admit I didn't realize "talking Tal" meant posts of Tal games with kibitzing, but that is not an especially important factor. |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> Thanks for acting promptly. Feel free, of course, to delete any comments I made to him. If I understood his confused threats, he said he had five more sockpuppets ready for use. So I'm afraid we have to stay on guard, unless you've already found a batch of new registrations with his IP. |
