 | | chessgames.com: <I also could not get your website to come up for several hours Tuesday night (to Wed. morning), was this my DSL ... or were you having another network problem?> We had plenty of traffic during that period, so it probably was just an issue local to yourself. However, note that we have had many complaints of *slowness* over the past week. We're not sure if we located the cause but we did find one very aggressive spambot that was spidering our pages at a ridiculous rate and uselessly posting its cheap-hotel-deals links into every form it could find. This could have contributed to the problem. However even the worst spambot shouldn't have left Chessgames unreachable, just a bit on the slow side. That bot is now banned at the router level. |

 | | chessgames.com: About the Java issue, we've been contemplating making that "web4pgn" be the default viewer for new accounts, and only upgrading people to Chess Viewer Deluxe on demand. It's a drastic measure, but the reason should be obvious. There is a disheartening fraction of people who sign-up to Chessgames, are unable to see games due to their lack of Java. Then they leave, since without the game diagrams, the site becomes little more than giant tables of statistics. The "Wow, this is great!" effect that we had on people in 2001 is lost on a huge percentage of people in 2012, simply because Java is no longer as ubiquitous as it was a decade ago. The drawback of course is that Chess Viewer Deluxe is so much more feature-filled, and it would be a shame to see so many people using web4pgn if they actually had Java working on their machine. |

| Apr-05-12 | | LIFE Master AJ: Good stuff on the JAVA, sorry you had a problem. I am pretty sure my DSL had problems, for a day or so, the router (for my DSL) kept re-setting itself. (That has not happened in many months, usually it only resets in case of a power outage.) |

You use javascript in your code right? There is an object, called navigator, and you can use navigator.javaEnabled() Then you can set the default chess viewer based on that for all new signees |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> I know you've said that correcting mistakes in the 'event' and 'site' fields in a game PGN is a less important priority than fixing other mistakes. And that it should be possible to mend thousands of games with a bit of nifty coding. Fine. I'm curious, though. Is there a simple explanation for Unzicker's name being in the event/site fields of a world championship game like Karpov vs Kasparov, 1984 ... ? |
|
| Apr-05-12 | | LIFE Master AJ: I had an idea, I am not sure of its worth, I guess that is up to you guys to decide ... On the EVENT page for the TOURNAMENT itself ... (or maybe a new page?) How about picking the top three (top five? top ten?) games??? You could do this in several ways. One obvious way is allowing the general membership to do it. I.e., the top games - by the amount of kibitzing - could be noted. For example, at Tata Steel (2012), the game A Giri vs Aronian, 2012 was easily one of the more brilliant of recent times. I don't know if the amount of kibitzing really translates into "Most Brilliant," but it might be a place for the serious researcher to start looking... Another thought was to pick a small editorial board. (Three volunteers, not newbies, not me.) Anyway, it would be these persons responsibility to find the best games for the top events like Wijk ann Zee, Aeroflot, The European Champ, etc. |

|
| Apr-05-12 | | LIFE Master AJ: I also noted a recent improvement in the speed of the return on the pages ... for several weeks, my CG response seemed to me mired in a sticky syrup. There were several changes I made on my end, (using a less complicated browser like Google Chrome, and experimenting with which plug-ins and add-ons to allow - for some reason, some tool-bars will also slow down your browser!); that helped a little, however, <in the final analysis> ... it still seemed terribly slow. The last few days the pages load almost instantly, even with MSIE. This is a much improved performance, I am sure it took a lot of hard work. (Thanks!) |
|
| Apr-06-12 | | LIFE Master AJ: RE: B Savchenko vs A Iljushin, 2010 I submitted at least three new games in the Sicilian today. (None of them are games that I played. One was <I think> a correspondence game, and the other two were by strong masters. In one, a GM played White ...) I TRY (note the word, "try" here ...) not to submit games that have already been submitted. I use the Openings Explorer and also use Search Kibitzing (searching kibitzes) using the players names ... to see if anything pops up. I also used to use a "back search" ... (find the games in CB, and then search for the game here - by name); but sometimes I get thrown a monkey wrench by how the name is spelled ... (The "Americanized or "Germanized" version?). See Opening Explorer.
This leads to http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches.... And even though the above game is in there, I missed it and almost re-submitted the above game anyway. I see that SOME transpositions are covered in the OE, but apparently not all? Is this correct, or am I missing something? I also had a couple of other criteria that I used for searching (this site) for <new> games, but now I do not remember exactly what they were ... (In this matter, I am open to suggestions!). *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** ***
Having said all this - it all shows how difficult it can be to submit a (new) game. Have you ever though about a PGN search tool? You could list just the first 15 or 20 moves of the game, and it would come back with a list of all the games on the website? Or is this too difficult a technical challenge? (Would it be too time consuming to justify the amount of work that it would take to develop such a feature?) I know I am asking a lot, I was just hoping to find a way to streamline the submission of new games. BTW, I probably have submitted dupe games before. If I did, I can promise you that it was an accident ... |

 | | WannaBe: At the bottom of the Opening Explorer page, you can submit moves or a FEN position, and the database will return you matching game(s), if any is/are found. This is the same thing you seek in the "PGN search tool?" request section of your post. For example, and only as an example. you can enter 1. Nc3 e6 2. Nf3 d6 3. e3 blah blah and see if anything matches... |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> You interested in scooping up some games from the Dublin Easter International? Daily PGNs and some live games are available at http://www.e2e4.org.uk/dublin/Apr20.... There are five GMs, about another 15 titled players, in a field of sixty-something. Relatively strong -- so strong-looking that I decided to play in the Challengers event, which is more like my current level. In the first round, GM Simon Williams lost to a Norwegian player, Mihajlov, with a FIDE rating around 2090. Big upset. Then another untitled Norwegian beat IM Mark Quinn. Have they all been drinking at the same magic fountain as Magnus, or what? |

| Apr-06-12 | | MarkFinan: <chessgames> I was using a Nokia c3, which is kind of like a cheap Blackberry, there's not too much difference in what they can do.. The problems i encounter when using that phone in particular, only happen now and again, so no... Its not a regular thing.
It's happened a few times, but i think iv'e worked out the reason.
My guess is its because of where i live now, as the signal keeps going, irrelevant of which phone i use... That's the only reason i can think of anyway, but thanks anyway, no worries.. I'm just going to buy a cheap laptop and a "How to use a computer for dummies" book!! :) |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Domdaniel: I'm curious, though. Is there a simple explanation for Unzicker's name being in the event/site fields of a world championship game like Karpov vs Kasparov, 1984 ... ?> I would assume that Unzicker wrote annotations in whatever source was used for the game. Especially in "languageless" publications, that information often appears in parentheses as part of a game's heading. |

 | | chessgames.com: < Have you ever though about a PGN search tool? You could list just the first 15 or 20 moves of the game, and it would come back with a list of all the games on the website? > WannaBe explained it perfectly, and in fact with the new feature you can do it straight from the homepage using the search at the top ("the EZ Search"). I'll walk you through it. Suppose you had this PGN and wondered if it was new to our database. 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Bg5 e6 7. f4 Qb6 8. Qd2 Qxb2 9. Rb1 Qa3 10. e5 dxe5 11. fxe5 Nfd7 12. Bc4 Bb4 13. Rb3 Qa5 14. O-O O-O 15. Nxe6 fxe6 16. Bxe6+ Kh8 17. Rxf8+ Bxf8 18. Qf4 Nc6 19. Qf7 Qc5+ 20. Kh1 Nf6 21. Bxc8 Nxe5 22. Qe6 Neg4 0-1 Like you say, just take the first 15 or 20 moves, now plug them into "EZ Search": search "1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Bg5 e6 7. f4 Qb6 8. Qd2 Qxb2 9. Rb1 Qa3 10. e5 dxe5 11. fxe5 Nfd7 12. Bc4 Bb4 13. Rb3 Qa5 14. O-O O-O 15. Nxe6" It sends you to the Opening Explorer, where you can see that 15.Nxe6 was, according to our database, only played in Tringov vs Fischer, 1965. Now it's up to you to examine that game, compare with your original PGN, and see if it is indeed the same game (and it is). It does one thing that is a little bit unexpected: it stops at move 14 even though you gave 15 moves. That behavior is intentional: we want to back up a level and show you a small set of games rather than take you to a "stub page" (an Opening Explorer page that only has one game.) We think it's a little more useful that way. Another tip: Anytime you're using the OE and you're down to a small number of games, it's easy to click on the "search database for this position" link (e.g. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...) and inspect them all by eye. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Is there a simple explanation for Unzicker's name being in the event/site fields of a world championship game like Karpov vs Kasparov, 1984 ... ?> You got me. The "Unzicker was the annotator" guess is as good as any. We'll get around to cleaning that junk up one day. My personal peeve is that huge majority of games which seem to be unable to make a distinction between "Event" and "Site". The *event* was the World Championship, the *site* was Moscow. Geez. This isn't rocket surgery. |
|
| Apr-06-12 | | LIFE Master AJ: Thanks for the explanation ... and I could not see <Wannabe>'s comments at all. I have never used the "EZ search" much at all... so now I have learned something else new. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. |
|
| Apr-06-12 | | LIFE Master AJ: Come to think of it, I will probably start with that feature from now on ... at least, when I am thinking about game submissions. |

 | | Stonehenge: <CG> Can you please upload the games that are in the queue? I've been waiting for six weeks now :( |
|
Apr-06-12
 | | chessgames.com: Sorry Stonehenge, we'll get to them soon.
By the way, another small unsung improvement: if you use the Advanced Search for a head-to-head comparison, you now get the same excellent head-to-head statistics that you get when you use the EZ Search. E.g. <Classical games: Viswanathan Anand beat Boris Gelfand 7 to 5, with 26 draws.Including rapid/exhibition games: Viswanathan Anand beat Boris Gelfand 16 to 6, with 44 draws. Only rapid/exhibition games: Viswanathan Anand beat Boris Gelfand 9 to 1, with 18 draws. *The figures above are based only on games present in our database which may be incomplete.> It was sort of a bug that the output was inferior when you used the advanced search, but now it's the same. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <chessgames> I've also noticed that the search results page for head-to-head comparisons now has links to the player page of each player. Very handy! |
