| Apr-10-12 | | Blunderdome: Also, I don't think this was such a hard question, so I'll just assume you missed it amid many others. Repost: <Question about the random game feature: does it actually pick at random (at least, in the way that a computer does things randomly) or is it weighted in some way (games with kibitzing / in game collections / etc more likely to appear)? Also, is there a way to get a random game within certain parameters? Could I find a random game from 2009, a random Najdorf, a random Smyslov game?> |

 | | chessgames.com: <Question about the random game feature: does it actually pick at random (at least, in the way that a computer does things randomly) or is it weighted in some way> It is weighted. Basically it first picks the *year* (anywhere from 1850 to 2012) and only then does it finds a game played in that year. To temper that behavior, a certain percentage of the time it intentionally picks a new game (last 5 years). Finally it has a "no draw clause" which is in effect 33% of the time. So draws are less likely to be picked than if it was truly random. In short, the random function prefers old games, but also likes new games, and it doesn't like draws. |

| Apr-13-12 | | ughaibu: Your logic puzzle is ambiguous, as you didn't specify "simultaneously true". So, all but number ten is also a correct answer. |

| Apr-13-12 | | crawfb5: <dakgootje: logic puzzle? Did I miss something?> The spring CG newsletter was recently sent out via email. The logic puzzle was in there. |
|
| Apr-13-12 | | dakgootje: Now this is weird.
In my gmail inbox - it says the CG-email just arrived a couple of minutes ago. Apparently while I was writing my previous post. However, clicking on it, it mentions it arrived 14:59 (3 hours ago). :S I think CG is cutting costs on the premium mail-pigeons. Those disabled one-winged 4-for-a-penny birds just don't do! |

 | | Sneaky: <CG> Thanks for using "my" puzzle! Somebody at FICS showed it to me some years back when it was making its rounds on the net. As far as these kinds of puzzles go it's not very well known. <ughaibu> At first I was confused at your comment but I think I see what you are driving at. By way of comparison, supposed CG asked "Which statements are true?" to this list: 1. X = 3
2. X = X / X
3. X = X * X
4. X = X - X
5. X = X + 1
Here statement #1 would be true for X=3, statement #2 would be true for X=1, statement #3 would be true for X=0 or X=1, statement #4 would be true for X=0, but #5 is demonstrably false. No value of X would satisfy all statements simultaneously but only #5 is clearly wrong in itself. But something still bugs me about your answer. If you say "Only #10 is false" that's the same as saying "1-9 are true", right? That means you are saying statement #9 is true, right? And what does #9 say? It reads "At least 9 of these statements are false." So how can you claim that at least 9 of the statements are false while also claiming that 9 of them are true? |

 | | chessgames.com: Our mailing list has gotten so large that mailing them out has necessarily become a 12 hour affair. We even warn our ISP in advance so they don't conclude we're spamming. Some of the newsletters are *still* in the queue, so if anybody still hasn't gotten theirs just hang in there. <Sneaky> Thanks for sharing that puzzle. Seeing how much debate this puzzle has caused on other forums I think it might be a good idea to move the discussion to Louis F Stumpers. Thanks. |

 | | Eggman: Hey Chessgames, can we get a page for the Aronian-Kramnik match which is starting soon? |

| Apr-15-12 | | MarkFinan: Hi <chessgames>, a few questions..
In your guess the move feature, i'm typing manually and when it comes to castling King side i'll type '0-0' and i get the "Bad game request" message again, and can't go back a page to try again.. Can you please tell me how to type a castling move, because it doesn't explain on your help page? Have you any plans for featuring any live games soon, where i could kibitz during the game itself? And when you have time could you please delete my email address i posted up for Annie a few pages back, because i keep getting email from people from other chess sites, asking some proper rubbish? I have 4 email addresses now, and thats the only one that i get anything chess related to... Well its not even chess related, but the email addresses the emails come from have the word "chess" in the title, so they can only have got my address from here... Plus anyone who wants to go into business with me has to be totally Insane, with money to burn lol. Thank you.. |

| Apr-15-12 | | LIFE Master AJ: New idea.
A puzzle forum, I would restrict it to Premium Members (to contribute) ... although anyone could solve them. See my forum ... for some recent examples.
One html page could be just the problems/positions (FEN) ... with the stipulations. ("White to move and win.") Then you would click on the problem ... and that would link you DIRECTLY to another page ... where you would post the solution. In this way ... no matter where you start ... you can always get directly to the solution without searching for it. What do you think? |

 | | chessgames.com: < In your guess the move feature, i'm typing manually and when it comes to castling King side i'll type '0-0' and i get the "Bad game request" message again, and can't go back a page to try again> We recently had a complaint from somebody else that on certain browsers, some of the time, they would end up getting "stuck" and unable to continue their game. We haven't been able to replicate that problem yet, but we have some ideas of what might be happening. The idea that you can replicate it any time you like by typing "0-0" is very intriguing. Thanks. In the worst case, you can always "back out" of the game you've started and go to Special Functions > Guess-the-Move: Clear Partially-Finished Games. Somewhere in that list will be the game that got messed up, and you can finish it that way. <Have you any plans for featuring any live games soon, where i could kibitz during the game itself?> Certainly the WCC but the Kramnik-Aronian match sounds like it might be great fun as well. |

 | | chessgames.com: <AJ> It's not a bad idea, but it might overlap too much with other puzzle-related type ideas we're exploring. It's worth noting that if one was very dedicated, you could post a FEN of a puzzle position, then a link directly to the kibitzing in which the answer is contained. However the way to set up the link properly is a little obscure and not 100% support. But just to illustrate, <Black to Play and Win
click for larger viewFor solution see I Abraham vs Janny, 1923>. |

 | | Annie K.: <cg> I've had some issues playing GTM from my iPhone too, btw - as I recall, it was mostly that on many moves I was simply not offered a move entry box, just the 'next move' button - and this after the "game" had already started (i.e., not during the first few moves). Can't report on anything recent, as I've stopped trying to play from the iPhone. A more easily-solved suggestion, though: I would strongly recommend renaming the Guess-the-Move: Clear Partially-Finished Games page, since I rather suspect that many users may be afraid to click it. Call it just 'Partially-Finished Games', or even 'Partially-Finished Games Manager', or whatever, just not something that makes people think they may instantly lose all their interrupted games while looking for them, if they try that link. ;s |

 | | Domdaniel: In olden times, a 'Partially-Finished Games Manager' was called an Adjudicator. Anyway, isn't 'partly-finished' more accurate? |
