Sneaky: <What's more important: finding aliens in Alpha Centauri, or finding a move that Capablanca overlooked?> It's not only a question of which is more important, it's equally a question of which is more *likely*. My money is on the aliens.

Domdaniel: <Sneaky> Your money is safe. Aren't there more possible chess games than there are atoms in the observable universe ... never mind atoms which have assembled themselves into lifeforms... ?

Domdaniel: We may be having an impact on the galaxy already. A bright one-off laser-like light flash has been observed coming from the Gliese 581 system, which has at least five planets, including one in the 'Goldilocks Zone' where temperatures allow liquid water.

The main theories are that it was (a) a weapon launch, (b) a signal for more back-up, and (c) a collective suicide.

Remember they're watching our TV from twenty years ago. Communism and Dallas have collapsed, and Kasparov-vs-Short is coming up next.

Wonder what happens when they get to see the movie "Battleship"?

Domdaniel: Right now, they're seeing Fischer-Spassky II from Sveti Stefan.

I'd be worried if I thought I was only 20 lightyears from a Bobby.

Stonehenge: <CG: Anyhow, after some testing, I can't find anything wrong. Perhaps you just didn't type it correctly; perhaps adding a space where there is none? If you want to test it yourself feel free to submit another whistle; no big deal. The good news is that we received other complaints, probably over the same issue, and we've taken action.>

<<Apr-30-12 benjinathan: <cg> I don't know what happened since I cut and pasted the name.>>

CG, you really should take a closer look into this little problem. I have had the same problem a couple of times. I just wanted to blow the whistle, but it wouldn't accept the problem user's screen name. I first copied and pasted it, and then tried it 'manually'. It didn't work.

  chessgames.com: Really?

I haven't been able to replicate this problem yet but I have a few guesses.

One guess: You accidentally copied the colon along with the username. (I know you're not that clumsy, but it had to be said. I put code in to remove trailing colons just in case.)

A better guess: It only happens when you copy-and-paste a name that has a space in it, because some browsers may change normal spaces into "non breaking spaces" which are actually some crazy high-bit gremlin characters. The problem with this guess is that it doesn't explain errors where people typed the name in manually.

A third guess: A few days ago we rebuilt the User table and a minor error was reported. Conceivably the database could have been giving bad results prior to that. So in this scenario, "It used to have problems some of the time, but now it work perfectly" would describe the situation.

I'm not sure if any of those guesses are true, but I'd like to find out.

<Everybody> feel free to submit a Whistle with comments that simply say "test" on any username you like until we figure out what the problem it.

By the way, does anybody perceive a slightly faster Chessgames response time? We've been tweaking some settings and in theory the server should be working more efficiently than it had been previously.

chessgames.com: I guess the bottom line is this: if you can faithfully reproduce the error, email chess@chessgames.com with precisely how you filled out every field on the page.

WannaBe: Did I notice a scroll bar in the Kibitz'n box that wasn't there before?

Or have it alwasy been there, and I have just been blind?

<Did I notice a scroll bar in the Kibitz'n box that wasn't there before? Or have it alwasy been there, and I have just been blind?>

You've just been blind. As soon as you enter the 10th line the scroll bar appears. Try entering 1 [enter] 2 [enter] and so on and you will see what I mean.

OhioChessFan: Seriously. The Banned Gang is now spamming the Fischer page with music talk?

Domdaniel: <Ohio> As long as they're happy.
May-02-12  TheFocus: I agree with <OCF>. Can you wipe out that music chat on the Fischer page?

Ridiculous.

May-02-12  MarkFinan: I don't see why It bother's any of you!!

What about Mr Rogoff's page? Will you wipe all off topic chat off there too?? Of course not, so when people talk about religion and other things i find nonsensical on that page, I keep my mouth shut..... For once ;)

May-02-12  hms123: <MarkFinan> there's a big difference between <Fischer> and someone like <Rogoff> who has been politically active, but is not currently active as a chess player nor of great historical importance.

Fisher is clearly of critical importance in the history of chess. Visitors to this site are very likely to visit the Fischer page. It would be nice for them to see relevant conversation about him and his career.

The Rogoff page has clearly been allowed to host political, economic, and other such debate in part so that it doesn't spill onto more historically important player pages.

There are plenty of other places for non-relevant posts on music etc. at member forums and the Kibitzer's Cafe. You might remember that the recent crackdown on the troop and LMAJ had to do with those discussions spilling over onto player pages where it was not relevant.

May-02-12  Robed.Bishop: The Banned Gang? Really?
May-02-12  MarkFinan: <hms123> Ever since iv'e been frequenting this site I've never seen anything but "Bobby is the greatest ever" type arguments going on there, so it doesn't really bother me because Its a player page, there's nothing of historical value, and it's not one of his game pages..

And i'm a realist, in the sense that when a discussion starts, be It music, chess, politics, or religion, It doesn't really matter where it begins, because this is a community so people will chat and respond no matter who's page it is..

I see nothing offensive there...
It's nothing Important..
And i don't see the relevence in whether It's Bob Smith, or Bob Fischer's page, why should one get precedence over the other?

I agree in a way, It's a chess site so stick to chess, but when people start talking about his favourite food thats even more annoying!!

Some just complain, for complainings sake..

There's worse things going on in every single one of our private lives, so i say worry about them rather than a page on a chess site :)

May-02-12  TheFocus: <Robed.Bishop> < The Banned Gang? Really?>

Just a couple of 'em.
