Check It Out: <chessgames> One quibble with the otherwise awesome mobile feature for live games: there's no way to review the game that I can find. Even now, hours after the finish of game 4, I'm not able to look at the game without going to a computer.

WannaBe: <Check It Out> At the bottom of the mobile page, there is an option (link) that lets you go to regular format (or as I call it, non-mobile mode, NMM) and then you'll be able play through the game that way.

WannaBe: <CG.com> Just as a FYI, I may have found (a) culprit to this odd zoom issue which caused thick lines and various minor problems to appear on this site.

If you hold down the <Ctrl> (which I tend to do, as I hot-key my way around various programs and windows) and spin the mouse wheel, my zoom setting changes.

chessgames.com: <At the bottom of the mobile page, there is an option (link) that lets you go to regular format>

That is true--in the worst case, you can always disable mobile viewing temporarily to get to the link you need. But that should be used only as a last resort. Ideally, the mobile version will offer virtually every feature of the normal version.

The link to "review game" is one that we just overlooked. It should certainly belong there and we'll put it in.

On a related note, one of the differences that we intentionally omitted was the link to the live-video page. We did this presuming that such videos would never work on the mobile version. But guess what--I clicked on the link and suddenly "Bennifer" are analyzing Nakamura's latest move, with clear sound, beautiful iPhone Retina-display, and everything. So expect to see those links put back.

The lesson we're learning is to not be so skeptical with mobile technology these days. One day I can imagine people using tablets & iphones for most of their computing, and only using the "old fashioned" tower computers for the most serious projects.

Annie K.: Curiously, that would send net usage back toward the other, non-interactive, media (such as reading, or watching TV), that it has "beaten" so effectively exactly with the allure of its interactivity.

Mobiles are fine for reading and watching, but for any active *participation*, beyond about 1-3 lines length, I like to have a nice full-sized keyboard in front of me; those tiny touch-pads (not to mention limited view of the posting window) are just too much of a hassle.

I love my iPhone keeping me in touch and up to date, but I don't see it replacing my PC any time soon when it comes to writing posts, emails, anything beyond tweeter-size text - and these longer posts are really what makes the internet social scene so lively, by allowing us to get acquainted with new people, not just exchanging a few words with already established friends.

If we're all going to be on mobiles, and therefore reluctant to bother with longer posting, then the "mobile-net" will become just another kind of phone indeed: a device used only to keep us in touch with people we already know.

That's not what the World Wide Web used to be about, back when the future was still the future. ;s

  jessicafischerqueen: <CG.com>-

Although it wasn't me who emailed you the <Nezh and Tal> photo you just put up on his web page, it was in fact me who first posted that photo on the internet. I ripped it from a Russian TV documentary on <Mikhail Tal>. I have no idea of the copyright situation on that.

This photo: http://www.chessgames.com/portraits...

After I ripped this photo, I first uploaded it onto my <Nezhmetdonov Documentary Film>: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

The photo next appeared on the internet in an article I wrote for <OnlineChessLessons> here: http://www.onlinechesslessons.net/2...

Since then, at least one other person has uploaded the photo onto a chess.com article.

So that's the provenance of the photo you are currently using.

I agree that you are unlikely to face any copyright problem in using it on <Nezh's> player page-

Russian chess documentaries, and Russian websites, are typically not hypervigilant about copyright issues over historical photos and footage.

However, this is in fact not the case with all old chess photos and footage- Many chess archive sites featuring such material charge money to download or use it.

chessgames.com: Even setting aside claims of fair use, it's our opinion that the photo is clearly in the public domain.

The situation is this: that in 1957 there were no "private" Soviet photographers who took photos professionally to sell to news outlets, and of course there were no Western photographers allowed behind the Iron Curtain. The news photographers in Moscow all took photos that instantly became the property of the state, and they were compensated by the state. Ergo, the original copyright owner of that photo was the USSR.

Now fast forward to 1991 and the dissolution of the Soviet Empire: what is to become of their wonderful archive of historical photographs and footage? The answer, happily, is that it is recognized as public domain.

May-17-12  LIFE Master AJ: ChessGames.com Statistics Page

This page does not look like it has been updated in weeks, I have been checking it occasionally, and the numbers never change.

chessgames.com: <LMAJ> I can't account for what you are seeing. Do you see at the top 177,180 registered users? If not, then the explanation is clearly that you are reading some sort of old cache of the page.

If you do see 177,180 then my guess is the page has been changing slowly and you just weren't cognizant of the changes. As time goes on the order of those lists become more and more fixed. Gone are the days when the "most popular games in game collections" is constantly reorganizing itself.

In any case, I appreciate you bringing our attention to this page since we noticed a few small errors that required fixing. There was an issue with fonts that made the page look funny, and also we had to change the expression "Java viewer" which we now drop in preference of "PGN viewer". (We have at least one viewer which is non-Java and hope to have a Flash viewer next.)

We also investigated what has long been a mystery to us: why such a huge number of people have "Chess Tutor" selected as their default viewer. If Chess Tutor was some masterpiece of programming this would be plausible--but let's face it, Chess Tutor is very old software that is doubtfully anybody's first choice. Here's what we unearthed: It turns out that a certain spam-bot that spent months creating bogus accounts had a predilection for Chess Tutor. Perhaps the spammer thought that if it switched its default viewer it would appear to be more sincere.

May-18-12  DanielBryant: Can I make a suggestion for the Guess the Move feature? I wish you could optionally turn off the thing that says "skip to the endgame at move 19" or whatever, because that gives away that pieces are traded on that particular move. I feel like I have to look away from the right side of the screen when doing it, which is distracting.

chessgames.com: <DanielBryant> That's a nuance which we honestly never considered.

The entire "endgame trainer" section of Guess the Move has been a headache from the beginning. It's a wonderful tool, but people click on those links either by accident or out of confusion.

One thought is that a preference option could "obscure endgame information" but I can imagine a slicker solution: make a separated "endgame trainer" feature which works with Guess-the-Move data but is not Guess-the-Move per se.

All this is a somewhat ambitious project but we can't argue it would improve the product. Thanks for your input.

May-18-12  Thanh Phan: About the loss of many Fischer type player created game collections, a way to recreate them?

May-18-12  DrNyet: I'd like to suggest the addition of a section on the Help page(s) for searching kibitzing. If it exists and I missed it, I apologize.

Further to that, is there a way to search within a particular forum, or player page, or game page?

And... if I'm not mistaken, I previously suggested some form of bookmarks to mark the forums and messages where one previously stopped reading (perhaps others have too; I don't know how difficult this might be). I don't think you responded, but perhaps I missed it.

chessgames.com: NEW SEARCH FEATURE
The Search Kibitzing has a new feature... two new features actually. You can now use a special syntax to search for posts by a specified member, or to exclude posts by specified members.

SYNTAX

To specify a certain member, you type

+user:<username>

Where <username> is a screen name at Chessgames. If the username has spaces in it, you have to put quotes around the name, e.g.

+user:"Chessgames Bookie"

To exclude a member, you use the negated form with a minus sign (-) like this:

-user:<username>

That will show you posts NOT by the specified user. You use this in conjunction with some other search terms.

EXAMPLES

• To find out what User: cu8sfan says on the subject of baseball, you can type

+user:cu8sfan baseball

• To find out what User: Chessgames Bookie says on the subject of "juice" you type in

+user:"Chessgames Bookie" juice

• To find comments about Fischer that were not posted by Sneaky, type this:

Fischer -user:Sneaky

• To find comments about Fischer that were posted by somebody other than Sneaky and Honza Cervenka, type this:

Fischer -user:Sneaky -user:"Honza Cervenka"

• Suppose OhioChessFan wants to find posts addressing him (or mentioning his screen name) but he doesn't want to see his own posts in the search results. He could type this

OhioChessFan -user:OhioChessFan

TECHNICAL NOTES

1. Although you can only have one +user clause, you can have as many -user clauses as will fit in the form.

2. The plus (+) in the +user clause is optional; if you leave it out, the plus is assumed.

3. You can use the +user clause all by itself, but when you use the -user clause you must also include at least one search term.

4. The position of the +user and -user clauses don't matter; they can be at the beginning, middle, or end of the other search terms.

5. The syntax should be slightly forgiving, e.g. inserting extra spaces before or after the colon (:) should still work.

6. Usernames are case insensitive. Don't worry about whether it's "acirce" or "Acirce", it will work either way.

7. Member names with spaces need to be placed inside quotation marks for clarity. Alternately, you can replace spaces in the username with underscores (_) or dashes(-) to avoid needing the quotation marks. For example, all of these searches are equivalent:

+user:"Honza Cervenka"
+user:Honza_Cervenka
+user:Honza-Cervenka

8. If you mistype somebody's username you will not get a special error message, so watch your spelling.

DOCUMENTATION

These enhancements to our Search Kibitzing are in "beta mode" and undocumented. We will update our Premium Membership Help Page later this month to provide official documentation.
