The example of somebody losing their job because the boss saw a post date was just an example. Some more examples: I've seen forums where somebody makes an inference/accusation against another member based on timestamps. Usually it is an attempt to provide evidence of sockpuppetry, but it can also take the generic "What are you doing up at 3am?" type jab. We don't like people who study timestamps as if they are forensic evidence, nor people who use them as an insult. So we did away with them, at least for display purposes. Knowing whether somebody works a "9 to 5 job" tells you a great deal about that person. It's a little unusual for a website to care about protecting user privacy in this respect, and I don't think we'd be evil if we displayed timestamps, but we thought we'd set a good example and err on the side of user privacy. This is reasonably heavyweight event for an open, with about 50 GMs, including Akopian, Efimenko, Cheparinov, Petrosian and Georgiev, and numerous other IMs etc. Seems it might now be the heaviest open outside of Aeroflot and Gibraltar.
