Um, you misspelled <MONTHS>.

Jun-03-12  crawfb5: <I would also really like having an actual time stamp (not just date) on the posts, but that's probably pushing it. ;p>

I thought the anti-time stamp rationale was so the boss couldn't figure out we were posting to CG during the alleged work day.

Annie K.: <craw> as I understood it, that may have been the rationale 8 years ago. I reckon that by now we have either figured out how to avoid having the boss know our cg identities, or we have long since "left" those jobs, um, one way or another. :p

Many thanks for processing them. BTW can you tell me if I've passed the 4000 milestone yet?

Jun-03-12  notyetagm: <GC.COM> Can we please have a forum for the <WOMENS WORLD RAPID AND BLITZ CHAMPIONSHIP 2012>? Note that the blitz tournament starts on Monday. Stefanova won the rapid tournament.

Thanks

I thought the anti-time stamp rationale was so the boss couldn't figure out we were posting to CG during the alleged work day.>

It's for general privacy reasons. The example of somebody losing their job because the boss saw a post date was just an example.

Some more examples: I've seen forums where somebody makes an inference/accusation against another member based on timestamps. Usually it is an attempt to provide evidence of sockpuppetry, but it can also take the generic "What are you doing up at 3am?" type jab. We don't like people who study timestamps as if they are forensic evidence, nor people who use them as an insult. So we did away with them, at least for display purposes.

Knowing whether somebody works a "9 to 5 job" tells you a great deal about that person. It's a little unusual for a website to care about protecting user privacy in this respect, and I don't think we'd be evil if we displayed timestamps, but we thought we'd set a good example and err on the side of user privacy.

WannaBe: If a business/company's admin wants to know what you are doing, what time you are doing what, we'll know. With or without time stamp on a (blog/social/chess) site. =))

Jun-04-12  twinlark: Hi <ceegee>

The Grand Europe Open at Golden Sands in Bulgaria has started. This is reasonably heavyweight event for an open, with about 50 GMs, including Akopian, Efimenko, Cheparinov, Petrosian and Georgiev, and numerous other IMs etc. Seems it might now be the heaviest open outside of Aeroflot and Gibraltar.

The official site is well set out and here is the games download page: http://golden-sands-2012.chessmix.c...

Jun-04-12  MORPHYEUS: My 1 cent, (i don't normally post here).

CG's suggestion of a "Like" button. Great idea CG.

I'll give it a thousand thumbs up.
Better than copying the entire post and saying i agree with this post. It's less tedious.

Also we'll find out, how many people agree with the post.

chessgames.com: Thanks WannaBe! It was a logical way to tie together a lot of the data we already had. It's fun to ask questions like "What's the most famous King's Gambit of all time?" (The Immortal Game, of course! Can you name the one that comes in second place? See Opening Explorer for solution.)

The last thing we still need to do is the documentation, although it's rather self-explanatory.

Jun-05-12  shavale: chessgames, consider adding this interesting link under chess news on home page. http://www.businessinsider.com/the-...
Jun-05-12  dakgootje: Appears they make the story seem a lot better than it is.

Only 2 games in the CG-db, for a rating of 2199, it seems a bit excessive saying his former career was chess master [even with the assumption that he's gotten better since the CG-games].

Moreover, apparently the hedgefund he manages collapsed around 90% in recent years.

So my first impression is that he's quite capable of selling himself ;)

Phony Benoni: <dakgootje> Looks like it's the other way around. His USCF-rating was in the 2300s during the early 1990s, before the games in our database.

http://www.uschess.org/msa/MbrDtlRt...

Jun-05-12  dakgootje: That's interesting.

Weird thing is that he's bumped into 2200 for a dozen tournaments - so apparently that's his assigned base-rating (or however that is called).
