 | | chessgames.com: Please nobody be hurt if your pun was on the lists below. These are puns that received very poor scores, but that can just be because you were unlucky to get some tough judges to review your puns (or maybe they just didn't get the joke). That's why we review them one last time before sending them out to pasture. The graveyard is a funny idea. Some puns however are there not because they aren't funny, but because they are supremely distasteful. There's one in particular that I couldn't even list. |

- Bhend Over>
Heheheh... erm, *cough*... um, I mean, yes, that's awful, isn't it? ;) <cg: <Oh the pain, the pain....>> You really should stop doing this, you know...
Preferably before you get to one of mine. :p
Incidentally, is there any way I can see my list of pun submissions from the contest period? I can see the list of puns I submitted later, but not those initial ones. Might be nice to see which are still in the running. In fact, it might be nice to see some indication of how they are doing/have done in the ratings? :) |

 | | chessgames.com: Getting back to some very old business:
<LIFE Master AJ: Spielmann vs Rubinstein, 1911 ("Guess the Move")
My 9th and 24th moves ... were also chosen as best by Fritz 13 ... after over an hour.Would think that one should get full/partial credit in a case like this.> We reprocessed the game with 30 seconds per move (that's longer than normal) and now it decided that the 24th move can be either 24.Bxf6 (I believe that was LMAJ's choice) or 24.Qg6 or the move played 24.Kh1! all for full credit. So it was just a case of Toga not analyzing it long enough, or perhaps analyzing it at a time when the server was overloaded (something we take pains to avoid but it happens anyhow). The case of 9.Rb1 is an entirely different animal. In this particular game, since it follows theory, the Toga-analyzed part of Guess-the-Move doesn't really even start until move 12. When you play the 9th move, it looks at these stats: Opening Explorer Notice that the "book" move is surely 9.Re1 but other moves are not disasters. Now if one played 8.h3 (with a 75% chance of winning) it would say "9.h3 is a reasonable alternative" or something like that. If you played 9.Bxc6 it would say "Historically, 9.Bxc6 fares poorly. Lose 1 point" or something. The statistics seem to back that up, but who knows for sure? LMAJ's choice, 9.Rb1 looks perfectly positionally sound to me (and apparently to Fritz as well) and yet when we go by the statistics we see it's only been tried once, in W Cohn vs Von Bardeleben, 1902, and Black won that game. In short, there was a problem with some of the moves on that game (not just the 24.Bxf6 mentioned) although when it comes to the "TN" 9.Rb1!? compared to the book-move 9.Re1, we think GTM is working as it should. It's basically trying to drum theory into your head, regardless of what Fritz thinks. Never forget, the game is GUESS the move: if a move has only been played once out of 292 tries, it's not a good guess. |
|
Jun-24-12
 | | chessgames.com: If there are other games that anybody thinks produces questionable GTM results let us know and we can do a reprocessing of them at a larger depth per move. Of course we can only reprocess so many, but if you have one in mind, let us know. Thanks. |

 | | tpstar: I am easily amused but one day later I still find myself chuckling over <Boooooock, Bok-Bok> and surely other people are finding diamonds in the rough here. I wonder how many of those GOTD submissions could be saved with a different idea. Don't feel badly at all if one of your submissions was chosen as their best of the worst, so to speak. Submit enough puns and you're bound to put up a few clunkers. <This is good game> Use that for Melvin's birthday, G. |

| Jun-25-12 | | Colonel Mortimer: <MarkFinan: Well firstly... I think It would be a terrible Idea to allow kibitzing on Goldsby's games, because of so so many reasons I won't even mention one of them!> Agree - and if these games were permanently removed, the issue of opening them up for kibitzing wouldn't even arise. |

| Jun-25-12 | | LIFE Master AJ: I might also want to point out what one of my students said ... I am the only person on this site - that I am aware of - whose games have been closed, (to kibitzing); this seems to be a very special form of personal and specialized discrimination. |

 | | Sneaky: <CG> I don't know what it takes to do this, but with Natalia Pogonina tied for 1st in the Russian Higher League is there any chance of us getting an impromptu live game? Also, does anybody know when they start, like in non-Siberian time? |
|
Jun-25-12
 | | chessgames.com: Sneaky, that sounds like a fun idea, but these http://russiachess.org/ events are very hard for us to figure out (Even with the praise-worthy help of Google Translation!) Is there in fact a live page? |

| Jun-25-12 | | Benzol: Thanks <CG>. I have updated my forum. BTW have you ever thought of including that kind of info in the Statistics Page? |
|
| Jun-25-12 | | PinnedPiece: <LIFE Master AJ: Any chance of re-opening my games for kibitzing, ('?') for now the trolls seem to have completely forgotten about me.> I would strongly recommend against this idea. <LMAJ> has shown deep, quick and searing antagonism to both chessgames.com and premium members. Keep his influence at bay, please.

 | | Phony Benoni: <Benzol> Number of games submitted is interesting information, and I wouldn't mind seeing where I rank (somewhere in the Top 40, hopefully). However, I wouldn't want to see it on the Statistics Page. That would turn the process into a competition and provide kibitizers an incentive to submit scads of unworthy games just to see their names in light. Perhaps the information could be shown on a page similar to the individual's Pun Submission List, available only to the kibitzer. If programming and maintenance would be relatively straightforward, there are other statistics that might be of interest as well. |

Anyway, I think these statistics include only games submitted with the PGN Upload Utility? If so, it would mean people who've e-mailed large game files to CG wouldn't get the recognition they deserve. |

 | | chessgames.com: <BTW have you ever thought of including that kind of info in the Statistics Page?> No, not just for the drawbacks already mentioned, but the only mechanism for counting is a clever combination of Unix commands. |
