| Jan-07-13 | | Blunderdome: Is it possible to add "circa" to a player's DOB? Phiona Mutesi does not know when she was born (according to wiki) and 1993 is an estimate. Would have posted at the Bistro but not sure how often you read it. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Blunderdome: Is it possible to add "circa" to a player's DOB? Phiona Mutesi does not know when she was born (according to wiki) and 1993 is an estimate.> Just enter the date 1993.00.00 and perhaps the bio can say "born circa 1993" somewhere to clarify. In principle, the software could be modified to handle cases like this better, but it happens so rarely it hardly seems worth it. I've seen scores of cases where the birthdate is unknown, but only two or three cases where the year is unclear. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <chessgames.com: For the time being we have a vague "cutoff year" (roughly when the site began: 2001) which is the year after which we prefer that Chessgames editors don't do anything.... yet.> That may have something to do with a couple of strange things. 1) Tournament pages like Astana (2001) and Biel (2001), which have no space for editing. 2) Collections like Game Collection: Dortmund Sparkassen 2000 and Game Collection: Linares 2001 which are not in the tournament index but cannot be nominated to become touranment pages. There are some collections in the 2001-2002 range which were about to be nominated; see Game Collection: Historical Tournaments 1: Fully Updated. Would it be better if we held off on these? |

 | | chessgames.com: You're right, that's exactly what I meant by "vague cutoff". We didn't want overzealous editors to start making articles about 2013 Tata Steel and other current events (at least not yet) so we kept the new tournament editing constrained to the previous millennium. The cutoff in part of the software might not be the same as another part (not a model of good design, but it's temporary) -- so bizarre effects like what you witness might happen with tournaments right around the cutoff year. <There are some collections in the 2001-2002 range which were about to be nominated; see Game Collection: Historical Tournaments 1: Fully Updated. Would it be better if we held off on these?> Exactly, hold off on these, but it won't be too long. Ultimately we may want to open up ALL tournaments, even ones in progress. |

| Jan-08-13 | | Benzol: <chessgames> Are you keeping an eye on the current New Zealand Championship even if it's only a blind one? Games can be downloaded from here

 | | chessgames.com: Sorry Benzol, here's a late start: 120th New Zealand Championship (2012). We can open it up for kibitzing as obviously there is interest. |

| Jan-08-13 | | The Last Straw: Help! I'm unable to log out. I go to the logout page, click the button that says "Log out of chessgames", and get to a page which tells me my chessgames cookie is cleared. Then, when I go back to the chessgames homepage, on the side it still says "Welcome, The Last Straw!". Do you know what is going on? |
|
Jan-09-13
 | | chessgames.com: <The Last Straw> I don't really know what's going on but here are two ideas: 1. Do you have a very persistent cache which tells you that you are signed in because it saw a page a long time ago that said that? 2. Try going into the part of your browser where you can see all of your cookies in a list. See if the Chessgames cookie is there. Note that it can appear under either ".chessgames.com" or "www.chessgames.com" (or even both). Incidentally, what browser and computer OS are you using? |

| Jan-10-13 | | Memethecat: I'm after a bit of help/advice from CG or its esteemed members, I've purchased my first over priced touchscreen android phone, I like it but it's very tricky to use on this site, especially opening explorer but also game selections and forward and back moves on the games, everythings so small and close together. So my question is does anybody know of any apps or browsers that would make it easier to use the site. My OS is version 4.0 ICS, soon to be updated to jelly bean, if that's any help. Thanks |

 | | Check It Out: <Memethecat> I don't know about the OS and app stuff, but I have iPhone 4 and will simply two-finger expand the screen to make touch-clicking on links easy. Works well for opening explorer and clicking the link you want at the homepage "recent kibitzing". When looking at games I'll expand the board to the size I want and push the middle play game on auto button. Then I'll stop it, go back, go forward, put it back on auto, etc. Occasionally I'll mess it up with clumsy fingers, but I find that works best for me. Hope that helps. |

 | | Check It Out: <Chessgames>
This is a follow up to a problem I had a few month ago that I posted about here:Here and there words were being hyperlinked to ads throughout this website. I didn't notice it at other websites. <Alien Math> referred me to a link on how to disable add-ons. I finally got around to it today. By disabling Adobe's Shockwave Flash Object add-on I got the hyperlinks to go away. I tested it. Enabled it, hyperlinks were back. Disabled it, hyperlinks gone. Here are the directions <AM> referred me to in case anyone else has this problem: http://www.ehow.com/how_12223724_di... |

 | | chessgames.com: <Check It Out> Thanks for the follow-up. I'm not sure, but keep in mind that this "Adobe's Shockwave Flash Object add-on" might actually not be a genuine Adobe product, but just malware that labels itself that to blend in. Anyhow, glad you were able to solve the problem. <magnifico> We didn't even ban you, we just booted you out of the Caissars for obvious reasons. Please chill out. |

Jan-11-13
 | | chessgames.com: <touchscreen android phone> We have experimented with "phone friendly" pages, and so far we pretty much just have one, the Live Broadcast Page. We don't do anything fancy like Facebook or Twitter, we just make the resolution of the page really tiny so the board and a few buttons fits perfectly in a phone screen. And it works very well! (You can't see it now, but tune in tomorrow for Tata Steel on your cell!) We've tested on both Android and iPhone and we agree: the biggest tip is to zoom into the portion of the page that interests you. Whether it's an Android or an iPhone, it's almost impossible to use the page until you zoom. As more and more people are using phones/tablets to use the web this topic will become increasingly important, so expect more phone-friendly pages in the future. |

| Jan-11-13 | | Memethecat: Thanks <Check It Out> & <CG> So far I've been using the expand/contract screen method but it's a slow process, I was just hoping. there was something better, I had an image of a circle that would appear around your finger tip with a mouse arrow connected to it so you could accurately choose small boxes/symbols, a bit like the universal sign for male http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Male if I was a developer I'd have a go myself. <CG> Not sure how difficult it is to implement but if one of the viewers had extra large move forward/backward buttons it would go a long way to making the site easier to use for the touchscreen brigade. |

| Jan-11-13 | | Jim Bartle: Is it possible for other users to find out whether two or more different user names are actually the same person? I believe we should be able to know when that occurs. |
|
Jan-11-13
 | | Annie K.: <Jim> it would be possible, but it's not done, for security reasons. After all, trolls are people too. Sortof. ;p |
|
| Jan-11-13 | | Jim Bartle: Sometimes two or posters are supporting each other, complimenting each other, attacking the same people, using the same language, etc. I think it should be open knowledge if it's really the same person with multiple usernames. |
|
Jan-11-13
 | | Annie K.: <Jim> thing is, identity can be most conclusively established by publishing the poster's IP number. However, this number also reveals information such as ISP, and often general location - sometimes even closer than "general" location. And this is a family site, meaning that some of the posters may actually be minors. And even when the poster is an adult - however obnoxious they may be, would you really want to put their families at risk? Just trust the admins - they have the information, and as we have just seen, when things get too out of hand, they can use it. :) |
|
| Jan-11-13 | | Jim Bartle: Thanks. I was just thinking the site administrators could inform us that X and Y are actually the same person. No more details. The administrators clearly can tell, as they announced nobody could vote on the Caissar awards using two names. |
