Jan-14-13  Robed.Bishop: Well, having just posted about the problem, Oracle has issued an update which, after it is installed, returns Java functionality to my Apple.

Rather than deleting my post, I left it there so that any other users with a similar problem might see it and know that a fix is now available.

Jan-14-13  playground player: This Java thing is terrifically frustrating, largely because I can only understand about every other word when people write about it. The question is, Can I open a chess game or not, without risking my computer getting filled with malware?
Jan-14-13  crawfb5: I switched over to <pgn4web> temporarily while this Java business sorts out, but found the game editor would not let me enter date and round information until I switched back.

WannaBe: Oracle have issued a patch for the Java security: http://www.networkworld.com/news/20...

Microsoft have issued a patch for (older versions) IE: http://www.networkworld.com/news/20...

WannaBe: Okay, I've installed the latest patch, and was able to view/use Deluxe Chess Viewer without any issues.

The only difference that I can see for now, is the pop-up asking your permission to run the applet.

I selected the check-box to always allow, and voila, it's just like before. Everything is cool.

Using IE Version 0.8.8112.16421 64-bit Edition
Update Versions: 9.0.12 (KB2761465)

chessgames.com: <playground player: This Java thing is terrifically frustrating, largely because I can only understand about every other word when people write about it. The question is, Can I open a chess game or not, without risking my computer getting filled with malware?>

To quote Oracle on the subject, "To be successfully exploited, an unsuspecting user running an affected release in a browser will need to visit a malicious web page that leverages these vulnerabilities."

So this means that you can trust Chessgames to not hack your system, but we can't make that promise for other sites.

So this means that if you can configure Java so that *only* "whitelisted" websites like Chessgames can use Java, you can use it safely (even without the recent security patch). We are working on an FAQ regarding this latest Java problem, and perhaps we can make a guide on how to do whitelist Chessgames.

We know that pgn4web has several drawbacks although for the time being that's the only non-Java program we can offer.

Jan-15-13  Benzol: <chessgames> Are you going to complete the 120th New Zealand Championship (2012) and import the rest of the gamescores from the latter rounds?

chessgames.com: <Benzol> So sorry about that, somehow we stopped fetching their PGN before the event was over. Here you go: 120th New Zealand Championship (2012)
Jan-15-13  playground player: <CG.com> Sorry about my computer illiteracy: but I am sure I didn't understand your answer (below). So when you compose your FAQ page on this subject, please remember that you have at least one member who is totally mystified by computer stuff.

  chessgames.com: <PP> Point well taken.

In a nutshell, the problem is that Java can be used to do bad things to your computer, but only if you visit a site that maliciously gives you "bad Java code" to run.

So of course you can trust Chessgames to not maliciously try to hack your computer but if you visit any sites other than Chessgames (and most of our users do), then Java may be a vulnerability.

Like I said, we'll make a more detailed statement soon.

chancho: <WannaBe> The chessboard will not pop up to a game (for me) unless I press the run the plug in while its asks for the Java update. But I have downloaded it already.

WannaBe: <chancho> Correct, at the bottom of that pop-up, there is a little check box, if you select it, it will not ask you again (for CG.com Deluxe Chess Viewer).

The fact that it's popping up, tells me you have successfully installed update 11.

Diademas: After some deliberation I have decided to renew my premium membership. Not only because this is the #1 site for information about our royal pasttime past and pressent, but maybe more because you sir has the balls to stop sabouteurs who wants to turn this great site into a travesty.

It might take some time, but sock puppets and psycopats should by now know who lies down the law. Should I ask for one thing it would be to dumb up the pressent hunt considerably. But thats just me.

You keep a tight ship sir, steady as you go!

Colonel, if you can't find it in the Avatar Area you can always email us a suitable replacement. We usually like to change it just a little bit just in case you ever meet your doppelgänger.
