| Jan-26-13 | | achieve: <Candidates> Thanks - as always we await with baited breath. ;) Regarding the point raised here about the visibility of the latest posts right beneath the board on the Live gamepage, a few remarks:: Those complaining about the quality of the kibitzing to the point that they can not stand (For the love of god??) seeing a mild pop-up of an opinion not of their favorites? I haven't seen much deliberate spam or useless comments during the live coverages of Tata. If there was, it must have been rather a minor issue, or I must have missed it. And if there is, you easily scroll past them. Since the request might be implemented in a way that leaves several hide/show options for all users/paying members, I have of course no problem with the requested feature, but find the request surprising nonetheless. |

Yep. |
|
| Jan-26-13 | | achieve: Nope. It's a convenient and necessary short-cut for the lazy and spoiled, and I hate to admit I am one of them. Ignore galore! Let's go for it, then. |

 | | kingscrusher: Please can the 'round' column be considered on some tournament pages like Tata Steel - I would like for example to check last round games etc Best wishes
K |
|
Jan-27-13
 | | chessgames.com: <kingscrusher> That's a very valid suggestion. The biggest reason why we've never done it in the past is due to the notoriously poor quality of round fields in so much PGN. We didn't want to have a column called "Round" that showed up with a long string of question-marks; it just makes us look bad. However things have changed a lot since we made that decision: the new tournaments are almost always perfect with regards to round fields, and furthermore CG Editors can now fix round numbers on the fly. |

That's great news if it can be added. Perhaps just N/A if it isn't available?! Also the logic of the tournament and opening choices might make more sense. For example the Ponziani was used by Magnus in an earlier round to when he faced Yifan Hou, who used the Ponziani against Magnus. If round information is shown then that is interesting chronological pairing information independent of extending the date field to have to put which day. Also some empathy for exhaustion and increased blunders as I would expect in later rounds more blunders as tiredness creeps in. Cheers, K |

 | | Eggman: I notice lots of talk on this or that page about the upcoming candidates tournament. Is it too early to get a page for the tournament itself? |

| Jan-28-13 | | whiteshark: <chessgames.com> For more than a week the 'playing through a game' feature (PGN Viewer = Chess Viewer Deluxe) doesn't work due to the suc♔ Java update. That's quite the ultimate disgrace, to put it mildly. Do you have any suggestions how to make it workable again? Thanks. |
|
| Jan-28-13 | | hms123: <whiteshark> <cg> That feature works for me on both CVD and CVD II. Are you getting a pop-up window from Java asking permission to run the app? Sometimes that pop-up is slow to appear or is hidden behind the browser window. I use Google Chrome on a PC. |
|
| Jan-28-13 | | Memethecat: Fortnight ago I asked if anybody new of an app for the android phone OS, that would make life a bit easier on these chess sites for folk with large clumsy fingers, a mouse pointer was what I had in mind, hitting the right square out of 64 on a 2"x 2" board is.... difficult. So, long story short, there is no app, but you can download a browser that contains the mouse pointer, I found 2. Puffin Web Browser: did the job well but was slow and buggy, that said, it's supposed to work much better in the US. something to do with a cloud. Pointer Browser 2: (imaginatively named) it ticked all the boxes for Chessgames, from the foreword/backward move on the games, to the more fiddly opening explorer choices, GTM was made easier, not constantly having to pull up the keyboard. It worked just as well with Chesstempo tactics, if you're as competitive as me, knowing the answer to that 1900+ puzzle and accidentally hitting the wrong square can be expensive as thing's close to hand fly across the room. So far I've only tried these browsers on a few chess sites, it works for me, however they don't match the big boys so for now I'll only be using them for chess and hope that the other/better browsers catch on to this useful feature. |

| Jan-28-13 | | whiteshark: <<hms123>I> Finally, the thing is running, again! The missing part was an (in unison) update of the adobe flash viewer. <<hms123>II> Serious thanks! You renew my life-quality to its usual level!! <<hms123>III> Most helpful user award /Jan13 - you get my virtual vote, 4sure. :D |

http://www.networkworld.com/news/20... Looks like the experts are recommending using Chrome or Firefox (with Click-to-Play feature). |
|
| Jan-28-13 | | hms123: <WannaBe> that's what I have been doing (with Chrome), but it is really annoying to have to click <Run> every time a go to a game page. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Looks like the experts are recommending using Chrome or Firefox (with Click-to-Play feature).> Glad to hear that because that's our conclusion as well. By the way, for people getting the pop-up window that Firefox uses, please be sure to click the little checkbox "Don't ask me again for this application", it saves a lot of headaches. <PawnSac: Is there a way to remove a PUN SUBMISSION?> No, but if it gets voted down to oblivion it will eventually get pruned. To be perfectly honest, we wouldn't use "A real nice Ass whooping!" regardless of how many votes it gets. There are a few puns on our "do not use list" and making fun of Helgi's middle name is one of them. <<chessgames.com> For more than a week the 'playing through a game' feature doesn't work> Really? We had no idea about that. <Memethecat> Clicking one of 64 squares is going to be hard on any phone, no matter what we do. Your suggestions of different web browsers is interesting though. Thanks for the reviews. |
