chessgames.com: We appreciate reports of what you are witnessing, however please also tell us your browser and OS. Mac users especially, indicate if you are on 10.6 or 10.7 (that's Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion, respectively).

We think the problem has gone away for Macintosh users inasmuch as if you click the little arrow next to "invalid plug-in" it will actually update your system so that Java can work again.

For the past two days, when we used that little arrow Apple sent us on a wild goose chase. It would very frustratingly check for updates (for a good solid 2 minutes!) only to finally say something utterly irrelevant, such as how our iTunes was out of date. If any Mac users got caught in that little trap yesterday or the day before, please just try it again--click on the plug-in error, and we bet that you'll find like us, that suddenly it works.

Now, for Vista / Windows 7 / Windows 8 / etc. users, the situation is much more browser dependent. How this effects you will vary greatly depending on whether you use Firefox, MSIE, Chrome, etc.

Finally it bears repeating because many users are confused on this point: you can *always* switch to pgn4web and it will work. You'll may miss the features of Chess Viewer Deluxe, but at least you have a method of last resort.

Feb-02-13  Benzol: <chessgames> The Biographer/Editors seem to have run into a problem. We tried to nominate Game Collection: Interzonals 1973: Petropolis and found that this wasn't possible. <Phony Benoni> has a hunch that the incorrect Reshevsky - Polugaevsky game in the first round and also already features in the 1970 Palma Interzonal live page has disabled the ability to nominate the 1973 tournament. Can you look into this please. We'd rather not have to do a remake of the 1973 tourney if it can be avoided.

:)

  chessgames.com: Hi Benzol.

User: capybara hasn't been around in a long time, and we normally hate to alter people's game collections, but I think in this case he'd appreciate the correction. We'll see if we can't remove that game from his collection so then it can be nominated. I'm sure he wouldn't mind, especially knowing the purpose.

Feb-03-13  Robed.Bishop: Mac software 10.7.5 with firmware update and Java update now provides Java functionality. As mentioned by other users, Java version 7.13.
Feb-03-13  Benzol: Thanks <chessgames>. I don't think <capybara> will be too put out if he knows his collection will now be able to be the basis for a live page. Cheers.

  jessicafischerqueen: Good evening.

Could we please fix this gentleman's name?

If we are going to use this full version of his name Baron Tassilo Heydebrand und der Lasa, instead of the usual shortened version ending in "von der Lasa," then I suggest we at least use the correct long version, which still needs the "von" in it.

<Baron Tassilo <<<von>>> Heydebrand und der Lasa>

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tassil...

I like the "Baron" in front and I think we should keep it, because in journals and books I've often seen his name as "Baron Tassilo von der Lasa" or even just "Baron von der Lasa."

Feb-04-13  TheFocus: I liked his nickname myself - Tassy Lassy.

It has a classy catch to it.

  jessicafischerqueen: <TheFocus> heh

Some English writers have called him "Theo von der Lasa."

I wonder if his German friends really called him Theo? Also, if your friend is a Baron, do you have to keep calling him Baron every time you speak to him?

Feb-04-13  TheFocus: Well, Barrie is too informal.

  kingscrusher: Hi chessgames

I thought it would be nice to have 'interview videos' on player homepages - for example Ivanchuk did a masterclass video at the recent Gibraltar event which I think is very helpful for gaining empathy for such players. I mentioned the link here on a game he mentioned :

Karpov vs Ivanchuk, 1996

And people seemed to like it - but I think It would better if such key videos were on the player homepage somewhere.

Cheers K

Feb-04-13  Tomlinsky: I like that idea KC but wonder if it could lead to maintenance problems down the line with dead links, etc. If information is kept 'in site', as much as possible, then someone else can't bugger things up and add to the workload when linked material disappears.
Feb-04-13  DcGentle: Hello <chessgames.com>, I have got a question regarding the opening explorer.

The game Karjakin vs S Sjugirov, 2012 has the same moves as our game The World vs Akobian, 2012 upto move <8... Nf5>. Then it follows up with <9. c4> (bad choice, as we know now), where we continue with <9. c3!>

But the opening explorer stops at move <7... Ne7>, ignoring our game, although the first game against Akobian can be found in the Opening Explorer .

Can you do something about it?

Kind regards,
<DC>

Feb-05-13  DcGentle: <chessgames.com>: Thank you, this was quick! I like the way, the Opening Explorer now represents the situation at move 9. :-)

chessgames.com: <kingscrusher: Hi chessgames I thought it would be nice to have 'interview videos' on player homepages> We have a backburner project which would allow people to upload links, whether just a news article, or a video or PDF or whatever, to just about any page. This also means that ongoing tournaments would inevitably have all of the important links: official pairings, live video, etc. Very powerful concept, community bookmarking.

So in short, yes we agree with your idea very much, not just in your specific instance of interview videos, but in the general case. People come to our site to find links which get buried in the kibitzing--anything we can do to make that task easier can only be a good thing.

kingscrusher: <chessgames.com:> - Great - with regard to video links disappearing for interviews in particular (an issue raised), I thought maybe a transcription text would be good - for example just to capture Ivanchuk's opinions, etc. The text transcript file could act as a basic backup for the original video if that was for whatever reason removed.

Cheers, K

Two Black holes to avoid being drawn into.

Feb-07-13  Eyal: <CG> The time controls of the GRENKE Chess Classic as given on the live broadcast page are wrong - it should be 100 min/40 moves + 50 min/20 moves + 15 min/rest of the game with a 30 sec increment from the first move (see http://grenkechessclassic.com/index...). Also, you might want to change the link to the official site there to http://grenkechessclassic.com/index..., where there's a live video transmission of the games with commentary by Lawrence Trent.

Feb-10-13  optimal play: Hi <chessgames> I notice that the "Tournament Index" lists Berlin (1881) ahead of Blackburne-Zukertort Match (1881) although the Blackburne-Zukertort match was played before the Berlin tournament. The Blackburne-Zukertort match took place from 27th June to 29th July and the Berlin tournament ran from 29th August to 17th September. Is it possible to reverse their order on the index to make it chronologically correct?

Phony Benoni: <optimal play> I do know the new tournaments are sorted first by year, then in the order they were added to the list. There have been other requests for a chronological list.

Currently, the Administrative Game Editor for players includes an area in which a player's birth and death dates can be included. I wonder if a similar box for beginning/ending date could be added to the A.G.E. for tournaments, and that information used to arrange tournaments within the list.

Feb-12-13  Shams: Can we add Dzindzichashvili to the front-page player drop down menu? (For the obvious reason!)
