 | | chessgames.com: <I would feel like Pinocchio when you turned him into a real boy.> Thanks for reminding me. It's really just one good header-graphic away from happening. Speaking of good-header graphics, want to see something neat? One of the best header graphics we ever made we never actually used. Check it one: http://www.chessgames.com/chessimag... The story:
Back in 2005 people were complaining that there were too many discussions of blitz games that patzers would post on the Kibitzer's Cafe, and that this kind of analysis should be handled elsewhere, so that the K-Cafe could go back to its usual lofty intellectual pursuits. (Of course, this was all long before it turned into an oldies radio station.) So we briefly considered making a special offshoot forum just for analyzing casual games. We finally decided against it, rationalizing that discussing even bad blitz games on the K-Cafe can't be too bad of a thing, but we've keep it in reserve just in case. It might be handy when we finally release the "sandbox" feature. So anyhow Ms. ChessBookForum, if we can make such a great header for a feature that never even existed you surely deserve one as well. |

 | | chessgames.com: <WannaBe: More news on FireFox and Java> We've been following this very closely and have spoken with Nikolai (User: Viewer Deluxe). We will do what we can to make it work as long as absolutely possible for as many machines as possible, but sadly the day may be coming when we can no longer offer any support. There is already a huge impetus to make an HTML5 chess viewer that has at least some the advanced features that make CVD so wonderful. |

| Oct-23-13 | | Robed.Bishop: <WannaBe> Thank you for posting the article. FireFox's handling of Java appears consistent with Safari's. I continue to use the Java-based board here, but it is an irritant to have to constantly click the box and agree every time I want to review a game. |
|
| Oct-23-13 | | Robed.Bishop: I'm sure this is expected, but I've just updated my Mac's operating system to OS X Mavericks and Java continues to require the warning before running. |

| Oct-23-13 | | Abdel Irada: I think my opinion on <AJ> and freedom of speech has been somewhat misunderstood. My praise for the admins' magnanimity in tolerating his disparagements of them stems from my conviction that entities functioning in the role of governments are valid objects of criticism and any attempt to suppress such criticism is a step on the road to totalitarianism. I therefore take it as a sign of good health that <cg.com> is willing to see itself impugned with impunity. On the other hand, while the <cg.com> "government" has the right to forgive wrongs done to it, I'm not so sure it has the right to forgive wrongs to others. ∞ |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Good afternoon.
WOW this is indeed a fabulous header: http://www.chessgames.com/chessimag... The second I saw it, I thought why not gift the WORLD TEAM an "eternal dedicated analysis forum"? You could use the header for that eh?
Me and <hms123> already made an unofficial WORLD TEAM analysis forum several years ago: User: analysis forum Ironically, and tying back in with the <Pinocchio> topic, me and Howard made this forum because <HOWARD> had started using the <ChessBookForum> as a WORLD TEAM Analysis forum. After several angry letters to my lawyer (who happens to be <hms123>), <hms123> refused to budge. So I bought the User: analysis forum to save the <ChessBookForum> for its original purpose. Recently, I succeeded in convincing <hms123> to sue himself, and the result is that the poor man now pays for the User: analysis forum by himself. Ok back to the original point. What was it again. Aha! Just "thinking" out loud, but you could promote the User: analysis forum to "official eternal status" and use the fab analysis header you made? Benefits: YOU ALREADY MADE THE HEADER!
(sorry for the cap locks). |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Aha forgot to mention-
On a rare serious note, I was just thinking about this yesterday. Did you know that in all the years the <ChessBookForum> has been running, we have never once had to "moderate it"? Not once, not ever.
No post in that forum has ever violated the posting guidelines. In fact, no post in that forum has ever been off topic either. Possibly "books" is the kind of subject that dissuades site violations? Maybe because chess books are too boring for anyone to get their dander up. Oops what a giveaway!
Never mind then. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Karpova> -- <Correct me if I'm wrong, but you have first-hand experience that <chessgames.com> bans people, <Domdaniel>. > Very well. You are misinformed, and I'll take this opportunity to correct you. If I may say so, your insinuation concerning my past experience here seems like a subtly veiled *ad hominem* attack: I would have expected better from you. I have never had first-hand experience of banning, either applied to myself or anyone else. Some years ago, my forum was temporarily disabled to allow me to delete some inappropriate posts. Once Daniel Freeman had explained why these were inappropriate, I happily agreed to eradicate them. And things have been fine ever since. For the record, I think the CG admins do an excellent job under circumstances that must often be difficult. And LMAJ is not my 'client'. The line "somebody has to" (defend him) was intended ironically. Though I admit that I don't care for the way in which people gang up on him. |

Should be a bit more transparent, with a bit of charm thrown in 😉 👌 |

| Oct-24-13 | | Karpova: <Domdaniel>
Thanks for the clarification of the matter! And sorry for insinuating that you were banned and not just your forum shut down. <Domdaniel: Though I admit that I don't care for the way in which people gang up on him.> And as no real solution of the problem will ever be attempted, it's really not worth caring about. |

So why do so many people seem to care so much? |
|
| Oct-24-13 | | Karpova: <Domdaniel: So why do so many people seem to care so much?> Perhaps because they care about <chessgames.com>. |

 | | keypusher: <Annie K.: Hmm, I'm starting to think that keeping AJ around (aside from all other considerations) has the highly valuable attribute of spotlighting the most negatively-oriented personalities on this site. Such obsession with the hatred of one miserable, mentally handicapped wretch... not a pretty sight.> As a spokesperson for the negatively-oriented, miserable and mentally handicapped, I'd like to say once more that I really love this site. I've been here for nine years and made thousands of posts, and I hope cg is around for the rest of my life (which I further hope is a few decades at least). I complain from time to time but the good so outweighs the bad on this site that it's not even funny (and the good includes many of the posters who have lined up on both sides of the AJ topic). It just seems like there is a different, special rule for AJ, and I don't understand it. |
|
| Oct-24-13 | | Karpova: <keypusher>
I think that <Annie K.> characterized us as <the most negatively-oriented personalities> and insulted <LMAJ> as a <miserable, mentally handicapped wretch>. |
|
| Oct-24-13 | | MarkFinan: "A miserable mentally handicapped wretch" Well I guess he's been called worse haha 😃 |

 | | keypusher: <karpova> Well yes, but I didn't feel bound by the source material. :-) |
|
| Oct-24-13 | | Robed.Bishop: On the other hand, pushing for a resolution that would help the site strikes me as positively oriented, rather than sitting and doing nothing which is certainly not positive. Is doing nothing neutral or negative? "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice." Hmm, doing nothing just might be the negative choice. |
|
| Oct-24-13 | | MarkFinan: Robed. Bishop... Ever since you came to my forum saying I had fleas I've found myself disagreeing with everything you say. This time being no exception, for reasons I can't be bothered explaining. But I will get round to it. |
|
| Oct-24-13 | | Robed.Bishop: <MarkFinan> Good for you. I'll alert the media that you'll be releasing a statement. |
|
| Oct-24-13 | | Kinghunt: <King Sacrificer: I updated Java yesterday and now i'm getting security warning everytime i open a new game page. Java has disabled the option to remove the warning permanently.
Will chessgames.com acquire the certificate as a trusted site?> I am having the same issue. It makes it incredibly annoying to open any games. I'm using chrome, if it helps, but I suspect the problem is somewhere in the chessgames-Java relationship, rather than at our end. |

 | | WannaBe: The problem is at Browser-Java relationship. This is done by Oracle, (who now owns Java) and it's not just Chrome, Firefox, or IE. They all exhibit the same behaviour. Before this Java Update, all you need to do is check a box saying you trust this site, and it won't appear again, but now you need to do it every time a page with Java Applet (unsigned) runs. |
|
| Oct-24-13 | | technical draw: <The problem is at Browser-Java relationship> Thank goodness. I thought it was my computer. |
