 | | chessgames.com: <The Last Straw> That's a known bug: GTM lets you off the hook when you move the wrong rook (or knight etc.) We hope to correct that. |

 | | chessgames.com: <After 10 years I finally made <chessgames.com> my home page!> Good for you! <SwitchingQuylthulg> Received your correction on that Blatny game, please be patient while I make an admin tool to remove GTM status from games. I could do it by rattling off a few database commands but I fear that one of these days I'm going to make a mistake. Thanks for keeping an eye out for things like that, I hate seeing poor quality GTM games. |

 | | chessgames.com: <JFQ> <May I ask about the <Chessgames Bookie>?> Sure. First of all, you are right: when we do the next banner ad rearrangement, that one is due to go, or at least convert into the "mini size" and move well down the page. About the economics of ChessBookie! — to be perfectly honest, the game has always been a small expense (not even considering the prizes) and we've even considered discontinuing it. Nevertheless, for various reasons we decided to keep it going. For one thing there is a core group of people who really enjoy it, and while I doubt they would leave the site if ChessBookie! went away, we know they would be a little sad if it stopped. Another consideration is that little pie chart on our homepage: we think it is enjoyed by lots of people who don't play the game. Plus, it surely is the quirkiest site feature we've ever made. Other chess sites do their best to duplicate our features, but that's one feature which will always be 100% ours. So, given that we've decided to continue it, it's only right that we give it the promotion it needs to function. That's why you see a prominent ChessBookie! banner that gets top billing briefly four times a year. |

There's another minor GTM issue I ran into lately. If you look at Guess-the-Move (C65 games played in or after 1990) you'll find several of them have been classified as "Unusual Opening". C65 is also known as the Berlin Defense to the Ruy Lopez, and while some would undoubtedly wish it were an Unusual Opening, such is not presently the case. Indeed, the majority of C65 games have been correctly identified as Berlin or at least Spanish, rather than Unusual Openings. (And this problem only affects Guess-the-Move listings - if you look at say Areshchenko vs Y Kryvoruchko, 2011, one of the affected games, the correct opening will be given.) Do you have any idea what's been happening here? I've been trying to experiment by submitting more games in the same variations but the process is going extremely slowly. (I'm also not sure if any other openings have been similarly affected, but I can't recall running into any.) |

Um, not very good at it, are they? |

| Nov-11-13 | | davide2013: I'm interested in learning about some old players using Guess The Move. For example like Philidor, Staunton, Paulsen or others of that period. While for the most famous, like Morphy, there are more than 100 games in Guess the Move, for Staunton there are just 8 games. Is there any possibility to add more, without having the problem of the 1850 year/barrier?
Another thing I noticed, is that I couldn't add, to Guess The Move, games which are draws. Is there any chance to overcome such rule? Because in modern times it is easy to have a draw, which is an interesting game to learn. |

 | | chessgames.com: The "1850 rule" was never intended to keep old games out of Guess the Move, just that there are some games that we think is prudent to subject to admin review. There is a tendency for people to try to submit "extreme" games, like Rybka vs Nakamura, 2008, or Castellvi vs Vinyoles, 1475, or J Krejcik vs NN, 1908. As interesting as those games are, they are abysmal choices for Guess the Move. Hence our restrictions on the number of moves and the year. <For example like Philidor, Staunton, Paulsen or others of that period. While for the most famous, like Morphy, there are more than 100 games in Guess the Move, for Staunton there are just 8 games. Is there any possibility to add more, without having the problem of the 1850 year/barrier?> Maybe somebody can make a game collection of "Staunton classics that should be in GTM" and I promise I can queue them all up for you. <Another thing I noticed, is that I couldn't add, to Guess The Move, games which are draws. Is there any chance to overcome such rule?> The reason we've avoided that is twofold:
First, which side would you play? Or would you have a choice? GTM isn't currently equipped to handle the concept of choosing which side to play. Second, if the game is a draw there is always the question that the play could have been improved. Often draws represent a string of missed opportunities, sometimes by both players. So it's not impossible to support draws in GTM but we'd have to address those two concerns first. |

If you look at Guess-the-Move (C65 games played in or after 1990) you'll find several of them have been classified as "Unusual Opening".> We figured out what was happening there, due to a bug in our opening identification software it turned out that a few thousand games were only partially assigned openings (and not just in C65). Thanks for pointing this out, it was easy to fix and will improve other aspects of the site as well. |

 | | Check It Out: I did a cut-and-paste of a comment on a forum in to the "search kibitz" function and got zero hits. Can someone explain why that would happen? |
|
Nov-12-13
 | | chessgames.com: It might have to do with punctuation marks confusing the search. Not that they should, but I think they can. Could you please you show me the exact cut-and-paste? (Email it to chess@chessgames.com if you prefer to keep it private.) |

 | | Check It Out: A poster quoted the following statement, presumably made by another poster, and I only searched the quoted section (without the brackets) so I would expect the search to find at least the post I copied it from, if not the original source (which is what I was looking for): Anyone seriously comparing Anand's legacy to Kasparov's must have a screw loose... or be Indian ... or a Garry hater. |

 | | Check It Out: Oh, <Annie K.> while I've got you here, another question: on my forum I put a link for your wonderful pronunciation guide for famous chess players and I placed a link to your profile next to it. However, everytime I do that with your forum the period at the end of Annie K<.> goes away and when you click on the link it says there is no such user on record (because the period at the end of your name is gone.) Is this a glitch? Is there a way around it? |

| Nov-12-13 | | davide2013: Thanks for helping in introducing those classical games to GTM. I'm working on a collection for Staunton based on GM Keene book, and some other sources (chessbase commented games) when it will be ready I will notify it here, if it's ok. About the draw games, yes I don't have a clear answer to the questions you raised. But I'd love to play some games which made chess history, like Botvinnik vs Fischer in GTM. Obviously from Fischer side! :-) Maybe if I make a collection of draws to play as black, and a collection of draws to play as white, could those games be added to GTM? I believe some games are showing the evolution of the game, and they are an important milestone for every serious student of the game, so the result is often less important, than what we can learn thinking upon them. Guess the Move, is the right way to study those games. Thanks again. |
