 | | Tabanus: <instant messaging> A chat? A brilliant idea. A lot more of the off-topic stuff would end up there, for deletion afterwards. No hangover. |

 | | Tabanus: And a lot of the topic stuff too. I think 90% of my own posts here could be deleted now. I'm sure many others feels the same. With a chat I could express my instant feelings, without having to see them saved for eternity. |

| Dec-02-13 | | hms123: The <like button> or <+1> button was discussed a little over a year ago on this forum. There was not a lot of support. The thread starts here: chessgames.com chessforum |

 | | Domdaniel: <KKDerek> -- <What about the "like" button for some kibitz. I think the majority would love to see that.>
I wouldn't. I don't want to have to 'like' stuff, or 'love' things for that matter.
In the words of William Burroughs, "I don't want love, I don't want forgiveness, all I want is out of here." |

| Dec-04-13 | | Blunderdome: I could go for a "neutral" button.
We might want an "escape" button for Domdaniel as well. |

| Dec-05-13 | | davide2013: sorry to bother, I'm studying the opening repertoire proposed by IM Watson, and checking the example games in chessgames.com I found that strangely two nearly identical games went under different ECO, for example:
M Dvoretsky vs Polugaevsky, 1975 this is under B40, and labeled as Sicilian Defense, delayed Alapin variation
While this one: M G Gahan vs N P Shyam, 2011 is under B22, labeled as Sicilian Defense: Alapin Variation. Smith-Morra Declined.
But in reality this game didn't start with 1.e4,c5; 2.d4, like the Smith-Morra.
The only opening difference is at the 7th move, where in one game is played Bd7, and in the other Nd7.
Obviously I don't know how the ECO system works, if this is normal or a mistake. |

 | | chessgames.com: <davide2013> Issues like these are often complicated to sort out. There are a few possibilities: It could be that one of those openings is completely misidentified due to a lack of a FEN record which is identified on the proper ECO code. The solution is to add a record, which basically says "If a game has FEN (p), categorize it under ECO (x)". When more than one rule applies to the same game, the one latest in game gets priority. Or, it could be that the software is really being quite clever and spots a transposition that is not obvious to us. One of my favorite examples is Dus Chotimirsky vs Janowski, 1907 which is correctly identified as "Queen's Gambit Declined: Orthodox Defense" even though White never plays c4. You see, Dus Chotimirsky wasted a tempo with Be3/Be2 and therefore it was Janowski playing the Queen's Gambit with the colors reversed. To my knowledge, Chessgames it the only chess database which spots transpositions of that nature. Finally, it could even be that the question is somewhat debatable—one thing we've learned over the years is that opening identification is not a well defined problem. There are some middle games which can arrived at through entirely different openings, and how to label it can come down to matter of taste. Usually the first case is the explanation, but we have to be careful to not make break things that are working. Anyhow, if you put a correction slip on the game, explain your opinion on the opening designation, and our Librarian will press a special button called "Archive ECO Issue" where a number of these slips are being accumulated, waiting for the day when we can sift through them (perhaps with expert assistance) to determine what needs to be fixed. Thanks for your help. |

| Dec-05-13 | | davide2013: Well, I'm not an expert so I don't know how it works, and if it is wrong, and I'm afraid in fact that my lack of chess wisdom could hurt something working perfectly. And many of the things you wrote make really sense, since if we consider some pawn structures then the names of the openings don't really matter, because we can reach a certain pawn structure from many different openings, like explained in some chessbase dvds entitled "know the terrain."
Thanks for the explanations, they were really good, maybe you should think to add them to the FAQ. |

When a biographer only enters the country of origin then nothing shows up in the bio. Sometimes there is just no other info. It would be nice if you can change this. |

| Dec-06-13 | | davide2013: Is it possible to add this game to Guess the Move? Chigorin vs Steinitz, 1889
Because it came out a message which said: "ERROR - Games with over 80 moves can only be added by an administrator." |

 | | chessgames.com: <davide> No problem. The annual favorite (for those who like to watch youth bully up on the elderly) Snowdrops vs Oldhands (2013). The London Chess Classic (2013) starts tomorrow. We're also ready for the somewhat complicated London Chess Classic (2013) open/quad/knockout event when the games start coming in. |

While we were under the hood, we fixed an annoying formatting problem occurring when we know date of death but not a birth year. |

I think the majority would love to see that.> One thing I like about <chessgames.com> is that it's not Faceplantbook. One can post an opinion without feeling that a more popular poster (or better politician) will always get so many "likes" for his opposing posts (irrespective of their individual merits) as to make one feel shouted down. ∞ |

| Dec-07-13 | | Bittrsweet: I'm interest to know how this site's games in Opening Explorer have been selected. Are they all grandmaster games? Does it include blitz games? Does it get updated regularly? Thanks |
|
Dec-07-13
 | | chessgames.com: The Opening Explorer contains all games in the database, including blitz games and games not involving GMs. Our database has strong focus on high quality games; we generally require at least a master level (2200+) to be included in the collection. You can find a few amateur games, but they are the exception. The Opening Explorer is updated a few times a week. Sometimes you may notice that a game played in the past few days doesn't yet appear, but for the most part you can access any game in the database through the Opening Explorer. |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> Tigran Gharanian (one game in database) is listed among the players in the London Classic. He is presumably the same person as the Armenian-French GM Tigran Gharamian (also listed), with about 180 games in the database? |

| Dec-09-13 | | Caissanist: I'm curious--why has there never any mention of the US Chess League here in its nine years of existence, and why have none of the games ever been uploaded here? I played through a few of the games from the recently concluded 2013 season (http://www.uschessleague.com/games2...) and they seemed to be worthy of inclusion, while the PGN seemed to be clean. |
|
Dec-09-13
 | | chessgames.com: Actually the headers in that PGN are pretty scary if used as-is: <
[Event "?"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "2013.10.31"]
[Round "?"]
[White "Hu-ARZ"]
[Black "Hilby-LA"]
[Result "0-1"]
[ECO "A75"]
[PlyCount "74"]
[Event "?"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "2013.11.05"]
[Round "?"]
[White "Hess-CON"]
[Black "AIvanov-NE"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[ECO "E11"]
[PlyCount "108"]
[Event "?"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "2013.09.03"]
[Round "?"]
[White "RCostigan-PHI"]
[Black "AKatz-NJ"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[ECO "A46"]
[PlyCount "161"]
>
etc.
It's a great event and a shame if it's not covered well in the database. Perhaps the problem with their headers can be cleaned up en masse and the high level games inserted. |
