| Mar-22-14 | | john barleycorn: Dear all, I start wondering about the purpose of the "submit correction slip" function. A few times I have submitted that instead of 7.Qe2 the move 7.Rf1 was played in this game
Stollar vs A Serebrisky, 1945
Until today this error in the score has not been corrected.
Why? I don't know. Any feedback on the status of the "Correction slip"? None. Why ask for something from your members when you seemingly do not care? Or is it dependent on the member? |
|
| Mar-22-14 | | Shams: <john barleycorn> What evidence did you offer for the correction? |
|
| Mar-22-14 | | john barleycorn: <shams> none. |
|
| Mar-22-14 | | Shams: Well, there's your answer. |
|
| Mar-22-14 | | john barleycorn: <shams> not exactly. |
|
| Mar-22-14 | | Alien Math: <What evidence did you offer for the correction? none.
Well, there's your answer.
not exactly.> Possible reason for submit correction slip with more information other able to find, are less correction slips with <move 127 was kxe2> or equivalent since any wishing to cause confusion would able submit and create questionable games for entertainment value |

| Mar-23-14 | | LIFE Master AJ: NONE OF THE VIEWERS (except pgn4) WORK!!! WHY??????
Does anyone else have this problem? |
|
| Mar-23-14 | | john barleycorn: <shams>, <Alien Math> I looked up this game Stollar vs A Serebrisky, 1945
because I had it in my database and was looking whether kibitzing existed.
Please look at the game and the comments <perfidious> and I made there.
Then I noticed due to <perfidious> remark the mistake/difference in score.
I submitted the correction.
Now it would have been a normal reaction from CG to say "we received your correction however we need a source for that before we alter the score". Did not happen. Also the correction did not happen. So I sent CG another correction slip. Again no reaction. I mean if someone asks members or viewers for support they can be specific or at least reply. |

| Mar-23-14 | | Shams: <john barleycorn> I see. So you did have at least *some* evidence that the game score was wrong. That's more persuasive. The admins have a lot to do and your experience was not unusual so please don't be too frustrated. Both the queue to add games and the queue to correct game scores are backed up and it can take months to handle submissions. Also, I think some get stuck in the system, for reasons that have been discussed before on this forum. My last correction was similar to yours, but a bit different in that I requested a score change based exclusively on an argument from the internal logic of the game. (A given move was obviously wrong and there was another obvious candidate.) It took about 6 months but they made the change. You have a strong "in-game argument" for a score correction plus external evidence in the form of a different, much more plausible game score appearing in another database of yours. My guess is that will be sufficient proof for them, but perhaps not-- Daniel is careful about making these changes. Give it time? Thanks for working to improve the database. |

| Mar-23-14 | | Shams: <john barleycorn> Check this game out-- I think I submitted a correction slip on the date I posted my comment, November of 2012. It's still working its way through the system. :) E Lowenthal vs F Wildman, 1908 |

| Mar-23-14 | | john barleycorn: <shams> No worries, I'm not frustated.
Thanks for your explanations. |

| Mar-23-14 | | LIFE Master AJ: I know I have submitted many game score corrections also< I have no clue of how many. Probably the most annoying kind is when you have to different books that give different ones ... that can take forever to resolve. I submitted one just the other day ... V G Kirillov vs Karpov, 1962. I made a comment on the game, I ALSO submitted a correction slip! Its pretty obvious that the move in the game is incorrect. Its corrected in the book that I cite, the engine also chooses the move in the chess book. I am sure - in time - logic will triumph and that it will be updated. (Its actually kind of amazing, even a very young Karpov plays a lot of the machine moves the majority of the time.) With the huge number of games in the DB ... and the fact that is growing every day ... you cannot expect a game to be immediately corrected, unless its like one of the games from the FIDE Candidates Matches. |

| Mar-23-14 | | davide2013: Could you add this game to Guess the Move? Judit Polgar vs Karpov, 1995
It is a blitz game, but it is actually amazing. The key is Black's 17th move, which just move the rook in E8, and freeing the F8 square creates a transit for the pieces needed to defend the castle. I nearly cannot believe Karpov played it in a blitz game. And I cannot imagine Polgar's face when she lost! |

 | | chessgames.com: I have heard more than once about problems stemming from having more than one version of Java on the same machine. That's one of those things that shouldn't be possible but apparently it can happen anyhow. People have said that the solution is to uninstall all Java versions and then visit java.com to get the latest version. So if things seem impossibly screwed up, that's definitely an approach to consider. It's hard to offer very specific help in such a situations because the problem is almost impossible replicate. On an unrelated note, we had to laugh when we saw this game somebody submitted from an issue of New in Chess: G Morrison vs G Chandler, 1978. Maybe not GOTD material but very entertaining. |

 | | chessgames.com: <john barleycorn: Dear all, I start wondering about the purpose of the "submit correction slip" function> I remember an old cartoon in Mad Magazine which showed a business that had a box with a sign, "We care about our customers! Submit your suggestions here." ... then they showed the inside of the box, where the slips were fed straight into a paper shredder. I assure you, the correction slip process is not like that. We have every correction that was ever submitted since day one, either in the inbox or the archive. It's no secret that the Librarian tends to matters like wrong names, dates, and venues more often than move changes, and for good reason. We've had corrections slips with move changes that later had to be reversed. I don't want to call anybody out by name, but one person who has joined into this conversation was guilty of exactly that on at least one occasion. So in summary, our apologies for the slowness of the process and we are working on improving that, but please don't think your work is being ignored. |

 | | Stonehenge: <CG> I wonder why Marta I Litinskaya-Shul isn't listed in the <Happy Birthday to> section? There are more strong players that are overlooked here. If you don't want too much information on the homepage then perhaps you can make a link <other players born this day:>. |

| Mar-25-14 | | LIFE Master AJ: I posted several of my games in the past ... should I give up on any more of my games ever being posted? |

 | | chessgames.com: A few years ago we had the software just show everybody born on the current date. Later, thanks to the efforts of members like Stonehenge forever supplying new biographical data, the lists became immensely large—too large for homepage purposes. That's when we limited it to the N-higher rated players, or something like that. The "all birthdays today" feature sounds very useful and easy to implement. |
