 | | Annie K.: <Ohio> well, maybe Daniel can still refuse to admit that he was the admin posting with the <chessgames.com> account at the time? ;) Heh, that brief period when a site has gone live, but not yet Google-indexed - so only those "in the know" are about - is such a special time of camaraderie, excitement, and anticipation. :) |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <cg> Any chance you could confirm if the Bookie Championship Leg will end with the Candidates? Also, it would be nice if you fixed FIDE Candidates rd.11: Topalov - Karjakin before it's too late :) |

 | | Sneaky: As the "maybe-or-maybe-not-the-oldest member of Chessgames" let me say that I agree with the majority here: there's no crying need to make a special celebration of seniority. If you do it, I'll be gracious about it, but it's really not necessary. I signed up because I was urged to, and started posting because it was fun. What's far more impressive to me are the people like Honza who suddenly appeared on the scene and immediately discerned the potential value of the site. And also let's not diminish the people who are relatively new, that have already accomplished more here than I ever had. My 2ยข |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <You may recall a time when the Database Statistics page featured a section on 'Most Popular Forums', which was abandoned when it got too competitive> Heh... I blame <McLovin> for that one. Well ok and <Branko> and <ChessClassics>. <ChessClassics's> one and only comment on the forum spam war: "You jerks!"
Despite the actual existing evidence to the direct contrary, I had nothing to do with the demise of that category. |

 | | FSR: There's a glitch in the final standings at World Chess Championship Candidates (2014). Sergey Karjakin has 6.5/13, and plain old <Karjakin> has 1/1. |

 | | Richard Taylor: <CG.com> It would be good if you could look at showing (games of?) the NZ Seniors Championships. I am sure they post the games on line fairly quickly (some might even be live). Some of NZ's strongest players are playing in it (and some of the weakest such as myself!) it starts on Friday morning (probably Saturday in the US).
There are at least 3 ex-NZ Champions, several ex-NZ Champions, and 1 IM, some FMs and so on. Michael Steadman I beat not long ago and previously was NZ Champion in 2013. The tourney is not strong in International terms but it might be of interest to some members. (The reason for the strength increase is they lowered the age to 50). Unofficially it is The New Zealand Old Codgers Blunder Fest! That aside it might be worth looking at... |

 | | offramp: Can you PLEASE get rid of the front-page search-box that has the text, " Try typing a player's last name, followed by a year or range of years, e.g. "Morphy 58-59"." It never ever ever EVER works. I typed in AVRO and was told there were no search results. I <added> 1938 and was given every game from 1937/8-1938-1938/9. It never works and takes up useful space. |
|
Apr-02-14
 | | Annie K.: But you could *try*, couldn't you? ;s
Anyhoo, AVRO is not exactly a player name. Searches for player and year range usually work, even searches such as 'Player A vs Player B 2012-14' work just fine. I prefer the Advanced Search for many things, but the EZ Search has its place too. :) |

 | | Richard Taylor: <Domdaniel> Thanks. Gordon Morrell, who is or was a member here, amd who is from Canada and the USA but is now teaching in NZ and is 2159 FIDE is playing. I am hoping of course to redeem my terrible 2011 results - which, paradoxically, were caused in part because I knew that my games were being "watched", but there were other factors - but, as to "redeeming", I will probably only do so so. Be nice to play one interesting game at least. The disadvantage IS that one is being, or can be, "watched" and judged. It is not a big deal of course in the scheme of Chess events but I think it is interesting to see how well older players do as well as younger. This thought may bare relevance on questions of whether players should retire over a certain age and how long we can keep compos mentis and so on. Other related issues: did Kasparov do the right thing to retire? Or more relevantly: at what age does any strong or reasonably active chess player throw in the towel? And the wider issues of whether chess is good for the brain, mental health, etc In my case, well...enough not said! |

 | | chessgames.com: <NZ Seniors> Sure we'd upload those games, but we'll have to see how good the official site is on releasing scores. We'll keep an eye on http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/Ve... and see if download links appear. |
